Thanks for the comments! They are very useful!

I really had quite some difficulties when deciding the size and position of the house. I cannot make it too small, otherwise it will be disproportionated with the characters. Therefore, I will pabably choose to move it up a bit.

I will try to use those methods to make the grass land looks less flat.

Also..... sorry for my ignorance. How can I know which part of the picture used more colours than needed? And how can I reduce it?

Thanks again!

Hi, here is another picture. The house is belong to a small Chinese merchant family.

Probably a lot of things need improve this time. :P The roof is already the third I drew but it still looks strange. Also the grassland, not sure what I should do with it. I drew the tree according to one of the tutorial.

Please comment! Thanks a lot! :)

Thanks for the comments.
I will try to improve them.

Hmm, just one thing I would like to point out again. The size of the small table is fine for this particular setting of Chinese furniture. Please see the picture on post #8. (Look at the 2 chairs and table at the back of the photo.) The setting is quite common actually.

Here is the revised picture.
I corrected the vanishing point problem, so it should look less disturbing perspectively.
A bamboo wall was added. Hope it is not too bad. The old hermit is poor, so he cannot afford the ceramic tile for the ground. ;)
I also removed the outline of the furniture and added some miscellaneous objects.

Please tell me what do you think! Thanks again!

Sorry first, since I am not sure if this is the correct place to put this question. (At least it is really a beginner's problem.....)

Actually I only started learning how to draw picture with computer recently. I have already read those tutorials about drawings.

I usually draw the outline with black color first, then fill the color. (Is this the usual way everyone do?) My problem is: what should I do with the black outline afterward? It seems that completed background pictures of others usually don't have those black outline.

Also, for characters, the outline is usually changed to color similar to the area adjacent to it. I want to do this to my completed character, which has full walking animation already. But if I need to change the color for every single frame, the workload would be devastating..... Did I miss something in the poccess? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance! And sorry again for the silly question. :P

Thanks for all the comments!!!

I agree the table is a bit boring. I will add somethings like teapot on it later. However, the setting of the small table and arrangement of chair is what I intended to do. In fact, it is a common setting of chinese furniture:

The house owner usually sit on the left chair and the guest sit on the other side, and they would have a couple of cup of Chinese tea on the table when they are chatting, etc.

Ivy: thanks for the illustration! The bamboo wall looks much better than just plain grey wall! I will try to do something similar. The coloring of the furniture is sharp. I will see if I should use this color plan.
The woven mat floor is very good too. The problem is woven mat is Japanese thing..... Chinese usually use ceramic tile or wood floor. I think I may try wood floor.
Yet, just to clarify, it is the house of an old "ancient time" Chinese hermit, so the gold record and glass cupboard should not exist at his time! ;)

Elric: Thanks for the comments. Actually, the old man will sit on the left chair in the game, so it is one of the focus. Though I think I would do some big change to the overall color palette. (Well, the portrait/painting probably take more focus now then it should. I added it only for decoration.....)

I'll post the revised picture later after it is done! Thanks again!

Thanks!

Right, I forgot to mention there will be books and items on the shelf in the game.

Actually, it is supposed to be the house of a old Chinese hermit. I initially wanted to use a "bamboo" wall, but the shading would be very difficult..... :P  Maybe I could try to use wood?

Critics' Lounge / Shading of the Chinese boy
Wed 11/10/2006 16:54:51
I finally come to the shading of the front and back view of this Chinese boy. However, I think it looks strange somehow.

back

Can someone tell me what are the problem of the shading? Thanks again!

Thanks again.

Adjusted the ponytail a bit but not much improvement, so I think I will use the other one.

And yes, I should adjust the butt slightly.....

Thanks for the comments!

I will try to adjust the hair knot and see if it looks better.....

BTW, where can I find more photo of people of different cultures?

I am new to low resolution character drawing, still learning from the tutorial. I really need comments from you guys.

I want to draw a Chinese boy character:

Have not done the shading yet. But I think the outline is ok.
However, my friend thought the side view looks like a girl.....

Therefore, I changed the hair style:

Would this hair style better? Or still looks girlish?

Please also give comments to other problem of my drawing. Thanks a lot!

I have downloaded the AGS recently and is learning how to write a game. However, before really getting started, I found out that AGS does not seen to support Chinese words.

Actually, Chinese is my first language, so I was planning to write a game in Chinese first, maybe translate it to English later if it is successful (or if I ever complete it). I already have an idea about a Chinese 'magic' game.

I have checked the FAQ. There are addons for German, Greek, but no Chinese or Japanese atm. Probably not too many Asians here. :(

Can anyone help? Or should I just write the game in English?
