I don't know if the code is included in this conversation but...

I don't like it that the top bar follows the scrolling. It takes too much room from the main page. For example with 1024x768 resolution you can barely fit the top image of 'Eating' to a single screen. Also frames are bad and there's a lot of definitions on the HTML side that could/should be made in the CSS file. But I think the pages look quite nice.

You're making an online gaming system with dozens of games and you're failing to create a button? Seriously?

Also, as you are thinking of making it commercial, is this a paying job?

Hmm... Is it so that if the game doesn't have a panel review, it can't be nominated as a short game (as it's a newly added game)?

General Discussion / Re: Do you trust PayPal?
Sat 08/01/2011 19:32:37
I don't have a credit card, so I've been using paypal quite lot in the past years. Haven't had any problems with the basic functionality and now even if I got a credit card, I think I'd be more comfortable using paypal. Internet and money don't usually mix all that well, but I think paypal is one of the best choices out there if you want to make payments online.

Have you already sold the movie rights? I think I'll wait for the movie as this game seems a bit too hard core to my skill level...

Okies, here we go... For your consideration:

Warning: Fragile! - Chapter I (available here)

Warning: Fragile! - Chapter I is the first chapter of a humorous sci-fi trilogy, where Captain Bingler (the green guy) is given a task to deliver a package to a far away planet called Earth. The game uses high detail prerendered 3D-art and it tries to be a high quality package, delivering a short but fun experience.

You can check out an example of a cutscene here.

Best Animation
The game has smooth character animation and includes over 5 minutes of prerendered animation cutscenes.

Best Short Game
The game is still unrated, but I think it's a rather short game.

Best Sound Effects
Warning: Fragile! received many praises for the use of sound effects.

Best Dialogue Writing
It made you laugh, didn't it? A little bit at least? No? okay...

Best Gameplay
Classical in many ways, but it was perfected under hard play testing.

Best Puzzles
Well, there wasn't any "use key on door" puzzles... Or does "use robot arm on soda machine" count?

(EXTRA: Best documentation!)

Thanks for your time :)

This place sure looks nice. When is this thing going down or is it still completely open?

I'm just listening to the soundtrack of Grim Fandango now. It's definately the greatest adventure game of all time, at least in my books. It's the only game in existance that I think shouldn't have a sequel just because the original game is so great that there's no way a second game could make justice to it (especially nowadays as Tim Schafer is not in the same company as the IP).

TLJ and Discworld Noir are also high on my list. I think the fact that these games have a magical world without being childish is a big thing for me. Other than that, I've always been a Lucasarts guy, so other titles that I've liked are pretty much the usual ones from that camp.

I think that was great. I don't think the closeups were a bad thing; you see a lot of them in metal videos and I think it works. But what's up with the shorts? They seem a bit weird. Also the legs look like they were shaven. Aaand there was like 3 shots of the bass player in the whole video(!), what's up with that?.

But all 'n all, I think the video was really good for a budget job. I hope my band will be able to make such a good video some day.

I don't think shutupload.com is the site in question...

...its more likely that we are in the simulated section.
I don't think there's really point in calculating odds for something that to our knowledge doesn't even exists. It's like calculating odds for the existance of god. When we create a working virtual world of our own, where the inhabitants are aware that they exist, I think that's the point when we can truly start questioning our own existance on a physical level.

It's an interesting idea to play with, but as no world can definately say that they are the real world, it kind of loses it's point. Maybe there is just a god on the top level and every universe below that is just an elaborate simulation. Would that kind of hierarchy make the first level some how more real than the next ones?

Quote from: Ryan Timothy on Mon 27/12/2010 03:25:58
...But then one would argue that the creators of this simulated universe would be considered God. Meh.
When I started thinking about this, I think the computer itself would be more of a god entity. This is what wikipedia says about the attributes of a god: "The most common among these include omniscience (infinite knowledge), omnipotence (unlimited power), omnipresence (present everywhere), omnibenevolence (perfect goodness), divine simplicity, and eternal and necessary existence."

I think those fit the computer more than the programmers.

Btw, I think the movie you were talking about earlier is The Thirteenth Floor:

I guess now your mom understands why you like those visits to the graveyard so much...

Quote from: anian on Fri 24/12/2010 07:50:57Personally I'd don't like the system (although I guess it is more accesible) and like to play games in one go.
I have to agree. I like big stories and having 5 episodes that need to work alone too, just waters down the big picture. The episodes are okay as snacks, but I doubt any episodic game will ever make it to my top 10 games of all time.

Btw, I think the episode system is also caused by funding, as releasing a game in 5 pieces means you don't have to work on a game for a year or two with zero income. Understandable, but still kinda sucks.

I'm not a big Back To The Future fan, but I've seen the movies. I thought the game was fine. The controls are very similar to the new Sam & Max games, but I think these are a bit more confusing. I had trouble keeping track of how exactly I'm moving when the view changed. I expect it's better with a pad. The game itself was fun, but not much of a challenge. It has quite high production values, but I think you have to be a true fan to get the most out of it. However I like it that Telltale adds new ideas to their adventure games and break the mold a bit with some subtle changes.

For me it was worth the money and the time, but it isn't really a game that I'll be remembering in a few years or so. All in all, I'll be waiting for the next episode with positive expectations.

I had missed this & listening to it now. Thanks for posting  :)

General Discussion / Re: Some weird question
Mon 20/12/2010 16:09:49
Yeah, sure. Just add this to the credits: "All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental."

But seriously, no. You might get sued for using a real name. Though parody is okay, it's still hard to define where the limits are.
#38
That's really a very good idea. Makes the competition much more accessible.

I can't personally join these for another couple of months but after that I might have a chance, so keep 'em going!

The link doesn't work? Anyway, even without playing the game I have to disagree a bit. It's not worth trying to make an unfun concept into a fun game. Adding powerups and other distractions will not make a boring game into a fun and challenging experience if the core of the gameplay is just not entertaining. Even if you are making your first test games, try to think of a fun concept before you start coding. Quite often something that sounds fun on paper isn't fun when you actually play it and you usually should just accept that, learn from the experience and move on.

Even if we are talking just about learning to make games, it will be better to have specifications for a fun game before actual game making begins. It's much harder to add things later on if you haven't planned on having them and you will actually learn less when you are doing ugly patching instead of designing the system right from the beginning.

Good luck with your projects :)

Those were pretty funny  :)

I once played some kind of first person shooter story that was made like that, but I can't really remember the name.
