Hi!

Finished the beta 960/960. What a great game! Re: my last post (no spoilers here), the LOAD game bug is only in chapter 2. In episode 3 it is operations normal. You might want to standardise the nomenclature - either chapter or episode, 'coz at the moment it's chapters 1&2 and episode 3. No new bugs discovered at all, but the aforementioned other ones still exist in episode 3. You know, I didn't even think of mache being a pun - it's very good, must have had my thinking cap on too tightly. It took about 12 hours of gameplay, but that includes tea breaks, lunch, making notes, drawing logic trees etc. Puzzles were really good, and where I did trip over my own logic, I was able to backtrack and pick up missed snippets. Their non-linear nature also meant that I could progress in other areas. I did not use a walkthrough but I had played chapter 1 before, when you first released it. Congrats, and thanks for the entertainment. I look forward to the ending(s), particularly bearing in mind that the game start is a confession to the torturer, and the game is a recollection. Bonne chance mon ami!

G'day Bavolis!

I am having a lash at the beta, awesome graphics, story and animation! I'm only 730/960 at the moment, but have found a few issues - I'd better hide because I'd hate to spoil for others this great game. So..

Spoiler
1. The mouseover exit slider doesn't move. When operated from show to hide or vice-versa, the effect actually happens - when back in the game they're there or gone as ordered and when you open the slider again it has assumed the commanded position. It just doesn't slide with the cursor.

2. The LOAD dialog. When first opened, the uppermost option is coloured as if has been selected, but it will not load without first being clicked upon. When it is clicked, the name (usually "stuck" in my usage ) does not transfer to the uppermost window which usually indicates a successful selection. The game loads successfully, it's just that the player has no indication during the process.

3. On the way to and from Birthday Boy island, while still on the horizontal walkway, one can "use" the gondola and go to the top of the hill - conveniently teleporting through the hedgerow.

4. After ridding the world of Judgement Wardens (I love that term for politically correct nanny-police) at the festival you can still "look" at the balloon-pop (above the balloon window) and the speaker will reiterate the Judgement Warden warning.

5. Minor spelling/grammar - "aN angler", "he's A birthday boy plant", and "machemallow" should be "marshmallow". (The CAPS in the preceding are missing.

Sorry to nit-pick, but that's what a tester has to do. Now to find out how to

Had no problems until I wanted to leave, and the game wouldn't let me! I had
Spoiler
deciphered the code, touched the bracelet and have phone, paper, goggles and bracelet. There is a gap in the inventory items, but searching the apartment, workstations and computers yields nothing. I've spoken to siri about the walrus, Lennon, Chapman and Dakota apartments.

What have I missed?

By the way,
Spoiler
although John wrote the song "I am the walrus" on "Magical Mystery Tour", on the white album in his song "Glass Onion" he wrote:
"I told you about the walrus and me, man
You know that we're as close as can be man!
Well here's another clue for you all;
The walrus was Paul."

Ah 60s flashback! Maybe I was there after all...

One may as well ask "Is the novel dead?",

I own a library of classic novels, from the ancients to the relatively modern, and I read them many times over. It stimulates my mind and I become wrapped in the "temps perdu" of Melville and Voltaire and Orwell, Johnathan Swift and Shakespeare: These stories will never die, at least not on my watch.

I have played many of the games here in AGS, and I salute all the contributors - most of you have more talent in your toenails than I will ever possess. If you want to make a squintillion dollars, then I suppose this is not for you. But if you want to be adored and remembered for being a creative participant in entertaining the souls of your audience, then Bravo! You are all brilliant, and never lose sight of that acheivement.

One of the saddest things I ever read was an interview with a late cricketer who lamented "I went to school with boys who became cardiologists, neurosurgeons, and the like, saving peoples' lives daily. How can I justify spending 41 years at first slip??" Well, he entertained millions of people from all nations around the world for decades, me included, and I salute that contribution.  All of you are (like him) in the entertainment industry. You get to choose the game, and you are not limited by anything but your own minds.

This genre isn't dead - it can never be killed off as long as people have inquiring minds. The commercial market dropped out in the '90s due to CEOs of that time pursuing an aggressive "Acquire, strip assets, sell the remainder!" strategy. If Sierra had never been acquired, it would still be making games.

Never lose faith in yourselves - you are the greatest novellists the world has right now. Please...

Hints & Tips / Have I "dead-ended" myself?

Great game, and what an extensive world! I'm in Part 3, but I just feel I've screwed up.

Spoiler
I got to the bifurcation, already picked up the recipe and took it back to the ship, where the barman said he could make it, but I stuffed around with the catapult and sank the ship!

I don't want a hint or spoiler, just a yes/no. Thanks,

The number is the total number of pegs to be depressed - i.e. 9 means all pegs, 8 all but one etc.

Thanks Akril15.

I forgot the administrator was a dragon! I even tried to ignite the torch in the power socket in Vertex! Dumbass me.

Anyway, finished the game now. Some of those later puzzles were diabolically brilliant, congrats on a great game. (oh I found 1 little cursor bug, I'll try to replicate it and send you a pm)

Thanks Arj0n, but alas I am not wiser, nor have I got the part I require.

Spoiler
I got rid of the critter early using the fruit, I replayed the game from start even, but how do I get the crank from the jack-in-the-box? The critter had no interest in that device. (Oh, I solved the pig dilemma BTW)

Awesome game, and a credit to the series! I've played this all day and (I think) tried everything with everything and possessed everything I could (in all senses of the word possessed), but I'm stumped on
Spoiler
fixing R. Kyvist's gramophone. I guess it needs the crank from the jack-in-the-box, but how to prise it off?

.

I also have the

pig that looks too new to give to the archeologist, hopefully in exchange for the light to access the cave

. I love the non-linear gameplay, it's all-round a good production with puzzles ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, and I say "You got me here, I'can't proceed." Please don't let it be a MacGyver moment where you combine a twig with chewing gum under the moonlight, spin around 3 times and make a helicopter, Pleeaase!!

Hints & Tips / Harry Potter RPG by Marion

Is there a "Good" ending for this game? This is a great AGS game, with a couple of annoying bugs - see below - but the only endings I've been able to find are: (may constitute spoilers so I'll hide this)

Spoiler
Bad endings; send 3 students to the infirmary and be expelled; send 3 adults to St. Munro's and be sent to Azkerban; attack Voldemort when back in London at Malfoy's mansion - "game over".
OK endings; sit exams with less than 20 average and work in the ministery of magic; sit exams with 20 or more
average (more than 20 should not be possible IMHO but is possible - see "bugs") and become the Minister of Magic.
I have completed the 4 missions asked by the Order of the Phoenix/deatheaters, found the runic ring and unicorn horn, bought the seeds, completed the 4 student side-quests, found the secret passage to the Shrieking Shack and explored everywhere.

The only way to get to Sirius Black's apartment (i.e. leave Hogwart's) that I found was by killing an NPC (Lucius Malfoy), and once you leave Hogwart's you cannot go back, even with the train ticket.

I must have missed something, surely. Any ideas?

Bugs (possibly "undocumented features"):
Spoiler
Game crashes in the library after opening the restricted area entrance with the following message:
In "room23.asc", line 208 Error: NewRoom: Cannot run this command, since there was a NewRoom command already queued to run in "room23.asc", line 196
Sometimes crashes in Hogwarts Express with similar error, but if game is saved prior and re-loaded, sometimes it continues. Go figure!
Able to repeatedly use shelf in Auroa's Office to gain +2 Charms each time, same with crystal ball +2 Divination in Headmaster's office, to raise average to above 20.
