I maybe have a tricky one here.

What about a game that isn't yet released (still in production, thus no release date), but has a demo done and was added to the database aimed to compete for the Best Demo award?

For your consideration.

Nefasto's (Mis)Adventure - Meeting Noeroze - DEMO

A point and click game aimed for experienced adventure gamers, with notions and love for computer trivia.

It tells the story of a Game Data whose game has crashed at startup. Because of this he is trapped inside the Computer instead of being deleted. His presence is not very appreciated by the System. Instabilities, bugs, glitches and memory leaks appear. It is your job to find a way to get rid of him and save the Computer from an inevitable crash.

  • Nicely animated cartoon characters
  • Varied and colourful environments
  • A big world to explore
  • Learn about its unique denizens and morals
  • Innovative use of items
  • Intuitive and simple interface
  • Witty and full of geeky humour

Suggested nomination for Best Demo.

An updated version of DirectX 9 on your computer is highly recommended.

I wish you all well for the holidays!

So there was an embed link once. I wasn't sure if my memory failed me.

I had to test all standardized tags to finally find the one, when I had to embed my trailer. I was worried the AGS forum used a customized one.

Congrats! =D
Always nice to see interesting project get to their funding.

Thank you! I'm doing my best to keep the steam steady on this project.

It was nice to see your game at the convention. I can't wait to see more after I tried it, albeit briefly. Loved the ambience and feel.

I will check your demo and kickstarter campain.

I had a good time. Got to meet and meet again some great people. I will do that again next year.

I added the trailer video shown at the AdventureX 2013 event.

I have everything prepared. I can't wait. I only have to finish the video of my game now.

I've found a pretty strange behaviour while tinkering with the computer clock and compiling room scripts. This was done with the Draconian version of the AGS editor, but I suspect it is in every version past 3.0.

I was testing a feature in my game which needed to check the clock. So what I did was this :

I set my clock and date four days later than the current time the test was done. In this case I set the time at the 5th October while I did the test the 1st october (the real actual date). It worked fine. I forgot the set the date time back while I went on working on some other parts of the code.

I added a global variable in a script header and launched the compiler recompiling all the rooms, and everything worked fine. I didn't change anything in the room scripts at this stage.

I quit the editor. Backed up the game files. And I noticed I didn't set the time to the normal date, so I did put the date back to the 1st.

The next day I began working on the game again, on a room script this time. And that's when something went wonky.

When I launched the game to test what I added (room global struct instances in this case), the room script didn't work. And by didn't work, I mean the script ran without taking into account the changes. At first I was surprised. Maybe I wrote something wrong. Does the struct instances do something weird in the script? But whatever I did the script didn't seem to take into account my changes. So I tried breaking the script on purpose by writing wrong syntaxes like < thisisanotdefinedfunction{);==null >, removing variable definitions, even commenting the whole script. And to my surprise, the compiler didn't return any error and the game ran everytime. The room worked fine, but as if it was using a version that was never changed. I tested the same in the other room scripts. It was the same.

My first response to that was to "Rebuild all files" and so I did. After that was done I launched the game. Though it was recompiling all the rooms again(?), the game ran but it still didn't save my changes. So maybe the editor glitched somewhere, and I restarted it. At restarting the editor crashed, and crashed at every attempt. So suspecting something was wrong memory side, I restarted the computer.

After restarting the computer, the editor ran again and I loaded my game. Everything looked fine, so I pressed F5 to check further. And for some reasons, it was rebuilding all rooms again. Then, the horror, everytime I ran the game, everytime it was rebuilding ALL rooms AGAIN. Even if I didn't change anything, it was rebuilding all rooms. I can't stress that enough how annoying that would become. So since it was impossible to work on the game like that and suspecting I broke something, I had to use the backup I did the day earlier.

So I began working on a copy of the backup, and the problem reproduced. The room scripts didn't save the changes, while in the non-room scripts the changes were saves. Trying to figure out the reason, I discovered all the .CRM files for the room were timetagged at the 5th october; the fake date when I did the test the previous day. So I began to hypothesize : "Wait. The editor doesn't seem to save the changes I do in the room scripts. Is it possible it only looks on the dates to check if a script was changed?"

Therefore I set my date time clock at the 6th october, and lo and behold, the compiler finally saw the syntax errors and saved the changes I did in the room script again!

I guess I can tell this can be a critical bug and somewhat I can guess how AGS knows when a script had changes. Though it has a kind of convoluted way to reproduce (convoluted stuff are my thing to be honest).

I've found the solution to my problem, though I have to wait until past the 5th october before I can work on the game without breaking the editor.

So post-drunk amnesia is true!

I thought it was only a tale to scare of naughty children.

It works and compiles fine for me if I open acwin.vcproj to work on it. I've never tried to open the solution.

Hum... The cursing guy story was an example. Not a comparison. And in no way it is related to the rape topic.
I would have said so if it was, but it wasn't. Thus I didn't. That would have been silly.

Also: One person is AS important AS the majority. The same goes that a minority is AS important AS the majority. Not more, not less. Which was my point, concerning free speech.

But thank you for your overall interpretation. That was interesting. =D

Well, I did indeed say...

QuoteAsking for someone to be more careful to how they speak is a polite way to say to censor themselves and their emotion so they don't hurt someone else.

Which is about, for example, your side to suggest that people should be careful in choosing their words in consideration of your viewpoint.
But then I directly went to...

QuoteAnd asking anybody for not asking for others to be careful with their words is also censorship.

Which is about the other people's side that, for example, they don't want you to make that suggestion.
And I then went on...

QuoteAnd telling people who went through an hurtful/traumatic event that they have to keep it to themselves and not to share their pain/concern/etc... is also censorship.

Which is about another kind of people who simply, for example, wants you to shut up for bothering them with your problems.

That whole paragraph was describing a dilemma - about censorship and in extent free speech - by looking at three possible sides (I could go on and on with many possible other ones). It was very generallistic, also to avoid pointing fingers to anyone. Also it was a response to Khris's post where censorship was brought up; it being an easy excuse claimed by the 'dudebros' which is sadly also true. A truth that taints people who genuinely wants to bring up the topic of censorship and free speech which both also have very strong role in the debate.

As to why I consider "asking/suggesting to be careful to how someone has to speak" is a form of polite way to censor, well... How can I illustrate this?... It's like openly cursing in public. It's liberating for the guy who cursed, let's say, out of frustration. It's funny for a bunch of people. Some won't bat an eye. And it's shocking for the rest. Because I saw these offended ones I go to the guy and calmly tell him he shouldn't have done that. I'll go on and suggest that he should have thought of another way to verbally express his frustration to avoid offending the people out there. And it's a perfectly good reason at that!! One has just to be more contained for the better and happiness for the majority of the people. The intention was relatively good. But if I think about it, I've somewhat asked him to never curse like that again in public. I wasn't really considering the guy freedom to express himself the way he wanted. I only considered what he did was wrong by only looking at the offended people, at my experience and at my moral standpoint; which is my right as well. But I can't entirely say I wasn't trying to censor him with my suggestion. No matter if he was still free to listen to me or not.

And this a dilemma I try to put a spotlight on as well.

If I took you guys to court, or started a petition or said "You can't say that or I will complain or make reports" or whatever, then yes I think that would be an attempt at censorship. But if you are saying I can't explain another viewpoint to someone because it will censor them, surely I'm being censored no?

I believe that's one of the point I was trying to make.

Also, that post was neutral. It was general to every sides, not only one.

It surely created a reaction by going public; for motivating something like discussions and - let's hope - an thorough investigation to get the bottom of that case, and to put justice where justice is due.
On the other hand the public is not the best judge out there. I might even say it's the less fair kind of judge to date.

Because it's the favorite excuse of people who want to maintain the status quo.
At this point in time, were it slowly dawns on all the dudebros how severe a problem rape and sexism actually are, they just love to complain about how evil feminists want to oppress them. It's really disgusting but not too surprising.

I get your point, and in many cases it is sad.
I have to add though, I don't think that is as black and white to that much extent. Censorship is only an easy and cheap solution to 'solve' a problem, to make it virtually nonexistent, and has a strong dependence to morality which doesn't have an universal definition of what could be bad or good. It is after all something a lot of philosophers are trying to define.

The dilemma is this... Asking for someone to be more careful to how they speak is a polite way to say to censor themselves and their emotion so they don't hurt someone else. And asking anybody for not asking for others to be careful with their words is also censorship. And telling people who went through an hurtful/traumatic event that they have to keep it to themselves and not to share their pain/concern/etc... is also censorship. The moment someone says to another to shut up, keep it low or to be careful of the words they have use is technically censorship.
So actually both sides are genuinely concerned about their rights on free speech, and they're both resilient to auto-censor themselves for the sake of each other's side. Which in the end puts a shadow on the real issue at hand.

Censorship's a fascinating mind gnawing topic. Also the thematic of a webcomic I'm doing right now. It's kinda à  propos. =D

That's... a little different. Not many victims of murder are likely to read people joking about murdering people. And torture is kind of niche as far as crimes goes.

For now, yes. Just give it some time. Eventually there will be a set of strong events and proper (read: sensational) news coverage that will give an equally strong effect on people and collective mindset enough to reconsider the connotation behind those words, and the way how to use them.

It's been less that eight-nine years since we could even carelessly mention stuff about Muhammad.

It's okay, Ali. I wanted to add this example as a key point to also strengthen your statement.

This kind of examples aren't found very often in AGS games. It takes its share of time and work to create (assets and/or walk-behind masks) and setup in the editor. It can become an hassle, depending. Which is also why few of us noticed the problem with the walk-behinds and all.
