Messages - abstauber

#2161
Maybe time for explaining it until I forget it myself :P

Back in 1997, I've spent a lot of time in playing Duke3d *cough* even over LAN *cough*
And during one of those Duke-Nights, I was pretty good in getting a frag without doing much for it ;) One of the other players got a pesky about it, shouting "Ohh.. Abstauber..." everytime I got a frag. This was so annoying that I called myself Abstauber to make him shut up  ::)
Well, that worked but since then I've been stucked with this awful nick.

Abstauber could be translated as "opportunist" and verb would be "to scrounge sth." As I've registered here again, I chose my old nick in the hope that someone could remember me (as I've been around this place in 2000/2001)...

Anyhow a nick is just a name  ;)

Nice work!

The color are great and give the scenery a very gloomy atmosphere. Along with the music, I can imagine that this will get pretty thrilling.

But for pulsating lake... this looks a little strange. I think it would have been enough to move those ripples instead of letting the whole thing grow and shrink.

I'm just curious - those backgrounds look like a lot of work. How long does it take to get one done / postable? (you might as well keep it secret  :) )

Could it be, that the picture composition is nearly the same as in your first background (big building left, landscape and a tree on the right) ? You might try diversify your upcoming pics a little.

I'd go with the first one.

The second walk cycle is a bit    disproportionate. The knees are getting lifted to high and when swinging from back to front, the legs are getting a bit to much to the sides.

So the seconds looks a little too wacky for me - but it maybe this is caused by the shading of his shoes which also looks strange  ;) Since you mirrored those legs, it seems like you have two light sources, one from the left and one from the right.
Anyhow the first walk cycle fits you character better (my opinion)

Well.. it continues with you puzzling your way out of an elefant farm  := The characters and backgrounds had been already finished but the dialogs unfortunately...   ::)

The story iteself is about an epic journey... blablabla...  no seriously, it was quite unique ;) It's not that easy to summarize that story, but I might post it somewhere (6 pages doc) but I also might ask Cpt. Mostly first.

Don't be too disappointed - it's really really short (hardly a game)

Hi there,
again another ancient announcement. I hope, this is the right place to post, since this is not a game in progress, but also it's not really a complete game. It's more like a relic - a demo of a never to be finished game and therefore somehow completed. There's probably nothing to come after anymore.

Anyhow - say hello to The Vestibule

A game was intended to be done by myself, Yahtzee, Captain Mostly and mods.
During the development (ended 2001), a certain team member decided to take break from amateur adventures and so the development came to an end (and caused another certain team member to take a break too ;))

So what's left of this game is now to be released. Short but fun.

vestibule.zip (6.2 mb)

You might need Dosbox for this game since this has been compiled with AGS 2.15 SR2 (dos mode).

@Matti
just wondering: nice in the sense of "this is going right on the fridge" ?  ;D
#2169
oops, yeah - this should have been gray gloves  - thanks for the hint.
At first this was intended to be a knight-cowboy-mutant mix. But with a weather like that I got lazy and decided that a giant cowboy might be enough. But this hand-thingie.. I guess I can't avoid that

Somehow I managed to get my backbone back.
So here's how it really happened:
blabla..Princess kidnapped..bla..bla.. everything happend exactly as described my Fyntax. Me and my man ran outside and found this:

An iron glove!

It instantly came to my mind, that someone's trying to frame someone (I would leave a razor blade glove if I'd like to blame Freddy Kruger for example).
This criminal might have tricked everyone else, but certainly not this sharp thinking detective/medieval knight/guard/whatever hero. So the only solution must be the one I drew. Or me and the guards had too much absinth ;)

Anyhow I might loose the competion, but justice is on my side :P

Sounds like the trailer of...

Mutant Brokeback Mountain 2
tremble in fear, mere mortals!

55 colors used for the sprite.

This movie might be as cheesy as all those sequels of "From Dusk Till Dawn".  ;D

Oh, it seems that roomedit wiped out all walkable areas and hotspots for the first room. I've fixed the second bug too (hopfully) - both upload links have been updated.

I do remember, that I've archived most games of 2000 (and beginning 2001) on a CD - but I can't remember were I've put it. But I keep looking for it.

btw. Thanks for beta testing  :)

Yay, translation finished. Headless and rushed, but finally done (updated the first post)

As I translated the game, some more details came back to my mind. This game doesn't really teach you anything about the euro. It was meant as an addition to an info-CD we did in school. The purpose of the the CD was to inform you about the euro, and while playing the game, you could test your knowledge.

Nowadays, making fun about old people who're confused about modern times isn't exactly my style anymore  :-\
But as I mentioned before - this is rather of historic nature than praising my adventure creation skills.

Translation status:
Just 12 dialogs to go (and all the hotspots). And again, don't expect too much  ;)

@leon
There's a DB entry?!  :o Which DB should that be?
But it's still awesome that you remember this game!

@Kaputtnik
lol! You should really replay the game :D
#2174
Hmm.. I did translate the demo once, so CJ could play it too.
But if I'd translate it, I'm pretty sure I ruin every joke in the game
On the hand... not one understanding language, doesn't make it funnier too.

But yay! Replies!!  ;D

edit: I've started to translate this game, but it won't be too great. By the way, this AGS 2.06 message editor is a real pain! I'm glad, it's 2008 ;)

Hi there,
may I ask for your attention please...
Be prepared for one of the oldest AGS games around:  :o
Alles Euro?! (or "Everything Euro" for the international audience)

Things that makes you wanna play this game:
It's one week older than Rob Blanc
See the first appearance of a character you might already know
Messing around with Dosbox to make this game work
historical reasons
Cheesy english translation, altavista's babelfish couldn't do better ;)

Drawbacks:
It's not in english - although it's not hard to finish without speaking german
It used to be an educational game about the launch of the euro currency - so gameplay is somewhat limited
It's short and ugly  :)

So here's the download:
English (somehow.. at least english words):

ev_euro_en.zip

German:

alleseuro.zip

edit: forgot to tell you:
This game is from Feb. 2000, not a new release or anything else. I recompiled it with AGS 2.06, because my original files got corrupted somehow. Still I'm not sure, which version was used originally...

edit2: I also forgot to explain, what this is all about :)

You play a guy, who doing an alternative civilian service (to avoid army). Doing so, he has to care for Grandpa Schmidt-Rheinfeld who is confused about the new currency - he's afraid to loose half of his money. So you've to get him a brochure and learn a lot about the euro. Bam, it's that easy.

Since there must be an inner force to make people talk about their favourite paint programs, I'll answer quickly until this thread gets closed  ;D

I used to like DeluxePaint 2e, but it's undo function is so limited, that I switched to ProMotion. Grafx2 is similar to Dpaint but free.
#2177
Maybe we need an evaluation matrix next time?
Something like:

technique / style (3 pts)
creative approach (5 pts)
use of colors (3 pts)
picture composition (4 pts)

This is still somehow subjective but it would make it easier to understand the results.

For example there was a coloring ball, covering the silouette of a girl. Someone made alien-fingers out of it :) and I thought: "This is hilarious and the clear winner" - but well,  it didn't made it. The focus was on technique, rather than creativity.

If we would use some kind of raster, people would know, what to focus on.
What does everyone else think?
#2178
Great! Thanks  :=
#2179
*bump*
Quoteis it possible to bring back the exact palette import feature in the next version?
QuoteIs this something that anybody else needs?

me too, please bring it back.
Pretty pretty please  :D
#2180
Thanks for answering.

Well, I suppose, it isn't possible anymore to import backgrounds with their exact palette in AGS 3.x  :(
When my backgrounds are imported, AGS does some magic stuff and merges the global pal with the background pal. I think Gilbot explains this matter in some other thread.

btw. I already updated to PM 6  8)
