Thank you Oneiro_Farseer. Don't be spartan with your comments, I'd love to hear more about the impression the game gave you. And don't forget to vote. I'd also like to know what you thought of the ending.. or should I say

Spoiler
What do you think that happened in the end? There are several interpretations...

As for the other thing.. some beta testers will not get their pay checks.  :-[

I noticed that the AGS awards page is kind of outdated. I have some questions;

-When does the Nominations process for 2004 begin?
-Am I allowed to nominate my own game?
-Is it
a)a whole new voting process or
b)is it in any way related to the votes you cast in the Full length games section by clicking on each game?
If it's (b), don't games released on January have an advantage over games released on December? I mean, they will have more votes.

I know I'm not supposed to care about awards, but it would be nice to have some sort of public acknowledgement for my efforts.  :-[

Hints & Tips / Re: Other Worlds

Rosie, I've had this problem that you mention (if I understand it correctly) in the past with all AGS games, not just Other Worlds. A possible cause is that you have other programs running (for instance, sometimes if Paint Shop Pro is running on my computer AGS colors are always scrambled). Try closing every other program you may be using before running the game.
Oh, and thanks for your kind words. :)

Thank you for your enthusiastic feedback. :) I'm glad you're enjoying the game.

I didn't see this thread before. Watching other people talk about my game is funny. :) I appreciate your interest, but you should all try to solve the puzzles yourselves instead of asking for hints, you will enjoy the game a lot more. I don't think the "stuck for five minutes, ask for hint" technique is the right one. But hey, the customer is always right, what do I know?

error:displaymessage: invalid message number to display

pls help

I can't believe so many people tested the game for so much time and nobody ever tried that before. It's only been three days since I uploaded it and you're the second person who did that. I'm sorry, you are correct.  :-[ It is true then, you can't release a bug-free game no matter how hard you try. You don't need to use the oil can once you're inside the car anyway.
Rui, I'll reply in private to avoid spoilers.

Thanks guys. The graphics are probably the game's worst feature, as I'm a programmer, not an artist. However, I think the story & puzzles will compensate you as you go along (it starts slowly but it gets much more interesting).
Totoro, keep trying and you will find it. :) I can give you a subtle hint if you like but you will feel better if you solve it yourself.
Khrismuc, I'm sorry that you think the manual's background is ugly. The obvious answer to your question is, I never thought about it. I can e-mail you a background-free version if you want to print it.
Good news: The game has been online for just 30 hours and already 180 people have downloaded it!

I just added Other Worlds in the 'Full Length Games' section.

Completed Game Announcements / Other Worlds
Wed 01/12/2004 21:39:46
I'm happy and proud to give you:

I can't believe it's finally ready. The concept was born after reading a phrase in a Stephen King's Dark Tower novel in 1997: "Go on then, there are other worlds than this".  I thought that phrase was so powerful I could easily produce a whole story from it.

For those of you who don't know:

Other Worlds is a traditional game which took me 3.5 years to complete. It is a 3rd person, point & click adventure that looks and plays like the late 80s Sierra / LucasArts productions. My intention was to create the best amateur freeware game ever (in terms of gameplay; no way I can compete with Tierra's graphics, sound or animation).

Features:

-More than 150 locations to explore
-More than 40 characters to interact with
-Dozens of inventory items
-The infamous A.L.K.I.S. interface (A.L.K.I.S. stands for Advanced Language Kit and Interface System)
-An intriguing, humorous story full of surprises and plot twists
-A large number of challenging puzzles

It is a fantasy story of a young woman going on a quest to find her missing friend, and discovering a lot more.
You can read a Preview here:

Ok then, what are you waiting for? Go to http://www.alkis.org to download it. I hope you will find it was worth the wait.

My beta testing team is full, thank you.. why would you want to test the game for bugs three weeks before its release anyway? It will be much more fun if you play it when it's out, without me asking you questions and telling you what to do all the time. :)

Thanks for the support guys. Well, the previewer exaggerated a little, sure the idea began 7 years ago but that was a different game, Other Worlds is in fact a 3.5 years old project (which is still a lot!). It took me so long because I don't know if I'll ever  create a game again, so I wanted to make sure that I'd make something sizeable. And I did, Other Worlds is a much longer game than the average amateur title (and quite a few commercial ones).
I'm not an artist so I had to use some outside help when it came to graphics, hence the real photo backgrounds. Not all of them were real photos though; in the screenshots you see, only the one outside the house (with the car) and the river are real. The landscapes, for instance (see rocky & icy screenshots) I created them myself using Terragen.
I trust that people who will bother to play my game will be satisfied with the story and the puzzles. I spent hours tweaking them, always having the games we loved as teenagers in mind.
I will of course never forget that none of this would have happened if it weren't for Chris Jones (I'm a good programmer and the script I created is a clean, easy to debug code, but a workman is only as good as his tools, and AGS was an AWESOME tool), all the good people in this forum who were always eager to share their wizdom, and of course my loyal beta testers.

My game is finally ready after 3,5 years of making! It has entered the final beta testing process and the official release date is December 1st.

I know that beggars can't be choosers, and I'll probably sound like an ungrateful bastard, but it's still not what I'm looking for.  :( It doesn't look considerably better than my sprite. I do appreciate the offer though Steve.

Speaking of the games in the banner, was Crown of Gold ever finished? I remember playing Chapter 1 a year ago and loving it. Now I don't even see it in the demos section.. or in the completed games section (short, medium or full).
#275
Well? Anyone?  :(
#276
I saw your sprite. It's not bad and it's close to what I'm looking for, but:

-It HAS to be 256 colors, as it's a 256 color game. In fact, there's only a small number of colors you can use as most of the palette is used for the background. Here's my current sprite, use these exact colors if you would like to try again:

(Feet are cut off because I was using this picture as an avatar at Just Adventure)

-I'd appreciate a bit more detailed features on the face
-Yes, it would be nice if she were a bit taller. In fact, forget the dimensions I gave; make her as tall as you like, I'll take care of the scaling. A zoomed out sprite looks a lot better than a zoomed in one anyway. My sprite is ok in 100% size, but when I'm in a room in which I have to zoom in by 150% it looks awful.
-A FoA look-alike would be a dream come true! Make me a Sophia-clone and you'll have my eternal gratitude.  :)
-Thanks for your help.
#277
Something in between would be excellent. I don't really mind if the main character looks different than the others, I have 25 characters at the moment and some of them do not resemble the others.
#278
Hello. The game I'm creating is currently at approximately 70% of its total size. I'm very pleased with the way it's developing, and the feedback I get from my beta testers is positive. One thing is bugging me though; I don't like the main character's sprite!  :-\ This is sad because the other ingame graphics are not that bad.
Would someone be kind enough to create one for me? I need a female with long straight light brown hair, green eyes, slim, about 30 pixels wide and 80 pixels tall, in 256 colors. I don't mind if it's a bit bigger than that but not too big because I'll need to readjust the scaling of all my rooms. I need views for front walking, side walking, back walking, front speaking, side speaking.
You will be credited of course, and I can pay you a little something for your trouble.
#279
I'm very sorry, it was all my fault. I was about to do as you said but then I thought I'd try running the game again.. everything was fine!! I guess there was something wrong with my computer the first time (low memory or something). Thanks anyway.

I used v2.56 to load a game I was creating with v2.55, and I have this problem:

When I click the 'Talk' icon on a character, the dialog options take too long to appear (5-6 seconds) and sometimes the bottom options are missing (ie there are 4 dialog options but only the top three appear). When the first dialog option script is done, I have to wait for 5-6 more seconds for the dialog options to reappear. This never used to happen in v2.55. I have an Athlon 2400MHZ/512MB RAM. I'm using the default dialog system, not a GUI.
I noticed in the changes text this line:
" - Fixed dialog options moving across the screen in non-GUI mode."

Maybe this is the key to the problem. Is there anything I can do?
