Ambientcoffeecup, didn't you, like, complain about how unwelcoming these forums were to "newbies" about 24 hours ago?

Yeah I did. But my post was not meant to offend at all I was actually just saying "WHY ARE YOU ONLINE, CALL POLICE INSTEAD." Because it is slightly worrying asking the internet for help when/if someone is breaking into your house.

I'm not so much trying to create something that sounds like a real acoustic kit. I guess if I wanted that I would head out to my garage and record myself playing. I'm just looking to try and create something as close to pro quality as I possibly can with the samples that I have.

I think the fading bass drum is more that I manually added fades to certain hits of the drum to try and give it a more dynamic feel :D Naturally a real person playing drums isn't going to hit every time with the same velocity or whatever so I try to go through each individual note and recreate what I feel will be the more dynamic hits over others. Maybe I shouldn't?

Anyway yeah I only added a very small amount of verb to the overall mix of the song to give it a small amount of decay and a little extra to the bass drum to give it a bit more boom. As I said I feel that there is enough on it already but maybe the snare could use some more?

But yeah, thanks for your input. It's good to work these things out.

Although I would consider myself a pretty competent percussionist. I'm not sure I really need critique on HOW TO DO BETTER AT DRUM. What I'm really looking for is advice on how to take the sequence that I compose and make it sound more professional and realistic which is very hard with electronic drums and sometimes I get to the point where I have been fine tuning drums for about 4 hours and it ends up sounding worse than it did two hours previous. I think this is probably because I am not very good at LEVELS and COMPRESSION and EQUALIZING which are pretty vital to knowing how to make music sound good and professional.

Anyway I've been practicing with bettering my compression technique over the past half hour or so and I think I'm finally getting somewhere. (I don't really need critique on the composition because what I've actually done is taken the composition from another song to save myself time. (Cat People - Cujo) so yeah.)

I had the song in my head and I just wanted the production practice so I tapped it out on my keyboard and run with it.

Here is the short loop: Download

So yeah, what I am really asking for is general compression tips/equalizing/leveling that any of you guys might have. I'm quite happy with how the bass drum turned out and even the snare isn't too bad I don't think. Could possibly do with a little more verb but I'm hesitant to add more reverb as I see it a lot in amateur musicians thinking MORE VERB = GOOD when I don't think that's the case. I like to use as little as possible. Maybe just a tiny dynamic double-tap delay?

MAIN PROBLEM I feel I have is with Cymbals/Hats etc. I really don't know what I am doing that make these sound so fake.

So yes, please, any advice you might be able to give from your own experience.

Thanks.

Well damn that's actually worse!

Are you kidding? I'm sorry if my post upset you or anything I wasn't trying to be insensitive. I'm just saying that it is probably nothing and I'm fairly sure it couldn't hurt to check it out. If you are really scared then I'm sure your husband wouldn't mind if you woke him up to get him to check it out anyway.

Um... "Help Me Internet, There is someone Possibly breaking into my house." I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but most peoples reactions would be to either go wake up their other half or call the police? Personally though I'd just go and check it out. It could have been anything and chances are it isn't someone trying to break in. Suck it up, open the door, find out that it is nothing.

So it's perfectly acceptable to have gratuitous scenes of rape and sexual violence, racism, the subject of paedophilia and antisemitism WITHOUT being banned from the forum and STILL being able to have your game displayed on the front page?

Someone mentioned earlier in the topic that it would be questionable if someone made a game about niggers and the KKK but they probably wouldn't be banned for it? Why the hell not? That shit is called RACISM and it is offensive and it is serious business. I know this is LOL the internet but that doesn't make things like racism more acceptable just because you can't see the consequences of the people you are offending.

Now don't get me wrong there's a difference between adding a racist element to your game, for instance a character who is racist because that is part of your storytelling and it happens in movies and books and I get that. But if someone was to make something like "KKK: Kill the Niggers Adventure" you think that would be acceptable? Because if someone was stupid enough to do that just for the sake of pushing the boundaries I would call for an outright ban and I think that not doing so is saying YEAH RACISM IS COOL WITH ME to put it bluntly.

In another Gaming Community I frequent there is a person there who makes his shitty little rm games and he fills them with hentai and violence and swearing and all this other pointless disgusting crap that he can throw in for shock value and I'm pretty disgusted every time he posts one of his new games at the replies he gets, "Yeah hey this is pretty Good." Why would you ever want to make a game just for shock value? Do you think it's funny or something to push the boundaries?

I'm sure most people here would prefer it if you devoted your creative time to actually outputting something good, with a story, rather than just COCK JOKES, SEX, VIOLENCE AND ANY OTHER SHIT.

Now if you have a story to tell, about a man who falls in love with an underage child, and kidnaps her, and keeps her in a cage, and beats her. It's PROBABLY not going to get a great response but that's your story and it doesn't represent your own views. My main problem was the response of "Yeah Racism wont get you banned."

EDIT:

I'd also like to bring up SUPER COLUMBINE ADVENTURE or whatever it is called in this thread. It's the most distasteful game I've probably ever bothered to play, but this kid has shot to superstar fame after making it (God only knows why it is the worst game ever.) And he is now having a film made about him and is actually working on pro games (About columbine of all things.)

I'm not going to link to the actual game because I don't think anyone should play it but you pretty much played out the columbine massacre in badly drawn 2D graphics. It had some stuff about Marilyn Manson and then you ended it up fighting Zombies in hell or something.

SHOCK VALUE. Do you think the guy really knew anything about Columbine whatsoever of the effects on the lives of these people that he might be bringing back traumatic memories and things. (Probably not, the game was pretty unrealistic.)

I'm not PRO-CENSORSHIP or anything but I don't think we've come to a point in life where it's acceptable to just brush off racism and things just yet.

You categorize people? It's not enough that they are human beings or whatever, they have to be lumped into set categories defining them by what kind of artistic output they have? It's things like the word n00b that probably need to be dropped from peoples vocabulary because it's such a coined internet term from a long time ago that lumps every new member of the community together in one "You are Shit" category.

No wonder people are leaving if people say things like that. "Here are your set categories. You as a new member are official a n00b well done."

It's like saying "Just because you are new, you are automatically shit." and not only that it is like laughable QUAKE lingo or something. I thought you only heard people talk like that on Counterstrike "lol pwned that n00b." It's so broken.

Download!

I pretty much got this far and then got bored and stopped. It is MY OWN TAKE on C+W I guess and I still got bored of it.

When is the deadline for this? I might cook something up.

AGS Games in Production / Re: Project Mexica
Mon 26/11/2007 17:34:17
I don't think there's any way I can put a release date on it. I am hoping within the next few weeks but who really knows? I have to contact my friend, nail out the script and then finally open AGS and actually get it done which is pretty intimidating I guess. I don't know what kind of technical issues I might come up against. But yeah I am saying to myself 2 - 4 weeks right now.

Thanks Nikolas, I'll be sure to get those 3000 posts. :D

And Nacho, as I said in the topic all the pixel art was done by my friend Frankie, not myself but yes, he is very good!

(I am a man.)

I don't think I ever posted immaturely or was ever disrespected or anything? I think I was just another guy. What I meant was that the attitude towards new members was fairly unwelcoming at the time and saying "Well if you just stick it out and post maturely that will be cool." doesn't really cut it if it is not the fault of the new member wanting to post, just that the current members are skeptical of new members joining thinking that everyone is just another Internet lame-ass who can be treated like jerks until they leave so that us, the elitist regulars can keep to ourselves.

Anyway I don't want to come across as a jerk already after just 4 posts on my new account but that was the impression I got the first time round. Maybe it's different now.

AGS Games in Production / Project Mexica

Project Mexica
---------

Thanks for checking out the topic. This is a little game I've been working on in my absence from the AGS community. It started off with a script I pitched to ildu, but I thought to myself "damn I can't start working on a project as big is this without something smaller to show for myself." So I said to ildu I was going away to work on something smaller to become more familiar with AGS and well here is the spoils of my work so far. (I have become too invested in this project, but I have to see it through to completion.)

Project Mexica is a working title because I really have no idea what it is going to be called ultimately. I am writing it along with a friend of mine and although storyline and scripting and things is pretty much decided, a definite name isn't.

Storyline
The storyline is pretty basic, I didn't want to get overly complex with something that was really just supposed to be a LEARN HOW TO MAKE GAME AGS GAME. But here is where we are at so far:

It's the late 1920's and you play the role of two explorers searching for the ruins of a lost empire, deep in the Mexican desert.

And that's it... Wouldn't want to give too much away now would I?

Basically one of the two characters that you control has heard rumor of an ancient relic that will grant immortality to any man who holds it. But it is lost in the ruins of this ancient civilization. Throughout the game you solve puzzles and do stuff until you find it. There is also dialogue and story. (Pretty much what you would expect I guess.)

So yeah I'm gonna shut up and give you the screens which is probably all you are looking for anyway.

Screenshots:

Excuse the default GUI stuff, I haven't got around to changing all that just yet. But I will do. All the graphics were done by Frankie who you can CHECK OUT over at his pixeljoint. I don't know if I am allowed to do this but I would feel bad posting and not giving him his credit: http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/4628.htm

Music:
I've put quite a lot of time into the soundtrack of the game so far and I'm quite happy with it. I am PRETTY MUCH done on that front thoughso that's one less thing for me to worry about. In fact EVERYTHING is pretty much done except for sitting down and actually opening up AGS which is what I am kind of worried about doing.

For anyone interested in TUNES and stuff you can check out some of my unfinished WIPs right here and now. Here are two tunes associated with the screenshots shown above:

Desert Sands - Download!

Cold Stone - Inside the Temple - Download!

If you can't tell I am a huge fan of Mark Morgan's game soundtracks.

Progress:
Now I know I'm supposed to post some percentages or whatever here but damn what am I supposed to just pull some random numbers out of a hat or do you really want me to calculate the percentage of shit that I actually have done?

Story:
Story is pretty much done, I've nailed down the outline, written up a complete game flow and all story plot/twist aspects have been nailed. The only thing left to do is actually script the dialogue and I have a friend of mine helping me with that right now so I don't expect it to take too long, especially on something that is pretty much a SHORT GAME.

Sprites:
There is only actually two characters in the entire game, and as you can see from the screenshots they are both there, so I would bet that I can safely say this is 100% done.

Backgrounds:
All done.

Puzzles:
We have all the aspects of the puzzles nailed in design doc format but as for actual in game coding and playability we have nothing on this front so far. Kind of waiting for all the script to come through before I start coding. (This is an excuse, I am actually too scared to open AGS. (I really want to make a game.))

Actual Coding:
heh

Music and Sound:
On the music front this is all pretty much done. Some of the music just needs to be finished off but other than that I am really happy with the soundtrack/score. Sound however I have no progress on. Need to start scouting out sound effects and things that I can use in the game.

Conclusion:
Really don't know why I am posting this. It is not for hype or anything, I just need to remind myself that I need to actually finish this project. I hope however that it looks interesting enough that you might download/play it when it is finished.

I expect the game to completed fairly soon, hopefully. Really just need to get this dialogue stuff sorted out and then actually knuckle down and code the game.

I'll be honest here. This is my second account here. The first one being "BunnyMilk." I didn't ever really leave, I was idle on IRC or browse the forums but I wont post and try my best not to talk on IRC because really you all make me feel pretty unwelcome. And I don't know why that is, maybe it's just attitude towards newer members or whatever but I don't want to post or talk because the response I usually get is just like "WHO ARE YOU YOUR OPINION DOESN'T EVEN COUNT *SCOFF*." and it's pretty unwelcoming.

Maybe other people feel the same way and because you are the regular posters who are settled in your ways you just don't really get that it is happening.

That's just my opinion though.

Sad to see that it looks like this is struggling. I was just coming to post about how great it looks.
