Perhaps a bit of a silly one here.

I'd like the player to get one or another ending depending on the final game score. For instance, if the score is:
$
<50 get the "Total Loser" ending.
50-75 get the "Keep Trying" ending.
75-100 get the "You Champion" ending.

I suppose I need to use the "game.score" global var, which I've found in the manual. However, I'm not sure about how to  enter the statement. Would it be just...

if ((game.score) > 75))

{
//"You Champion"
}

and so forth?

Cheers.

General Discussion / Changing profile settings
Sun 21/11/2004 10:32:53
I've noticed there's a new profile setting: "Games I've made".

I'd like to add the games I've made, but I can't modify it. It's funny, because I seem to be able to modify just about everything else.

I've added a tute I recently made for designing backgrounds "the sustainable way" (320x200 DOTT-style).

Here's the link.

Designing backgrounds the sustainable way (5 easy steps)

If the link doesn't work, or geocities tells you the page does not exist, just paste the link on your address bar.

I did post this in the tutorial thread as well, but I wasn't too sure people would look actually at it there.

Note that Geocities allows very limited bandwidth. Even though the site is pretty small you might get a message saying I've exceeded the limit and you can't access it. It should be back up within an hour from the moment you get that message, don't worry.

I had always been able to post my games on the main AGS page.

Now it says that I need to be logged in the forums in order to post a game. Even if I am, I still get the message.

However, there are games on the AGS page that have been uploaded within the last two or three days.

What am I doing wrong? Is posting games on the AGS page still possible?

After awhile of inactivity, AussieSoftTM proudly presents...Ã,  ;D

PLOT

You play Detective Michael Ebb, from the City Police. Back in 1974, while working for the International Police, you sent a bunch of terrorists to jail.

One day, watching the news at home, the bulletin is interrupted with an important message for you: the terrorists are back to haunt you!!!

They've got your 20 year old daugther and threaten to kill her in ten minutes. As there's no time to assemble a rescue squad, you head over to the place where the terrorists were last seen in a desperate rescue attempt.

FEATURING

- A thrilling storyline.
- Non-stop action.
- Countdown gameplay.
- 900kb of entertainment.
- A total of 25 rooms.
- Spectacular music and sound effects!
- 10 characters.
- About 100 Global VariablesÃ,  :P
- 320x200 Res.
- Different ways of solving certain puzzles.
- A super-simple user interface.

OTHER STUFF

- Feel free to report any bugs here, although I think I've done a fairly good work with beta testing.

- You might know what Geocities is like in terms of data transfer and so forth. If you can't access the page because the bandwidth limit has been exceeded, the page should be back up within one hour. I've made two very simple pages so as to maximise traffic.

- If you're a kind and compassionate soul willing to host the game for me until I get a proper domain. By all means let me know.

- Even if the game has to be completed within 10 minutes, I think it'll take a few attempts (you can, and most likely will, get killed in this game) before you finish it.

- Since it's 25 rooms and 10 characters all up, it's posted in the Medium Length section.

<EDIT>
Most reported bugs have been fixed and the new version of the game uploaded as of 15/10/2004.

Hi. I colored in this picture with Photoshop 5.5 and I'm interested in feedback on coloring in techniques (not so on the sketch itself).

I used four layers:

1. Top: Pencil scan. Multiplied. 50% opacity.
2. Upper middle: Coloring layer. Normal.
3. Bottom middle: Black and white outline (from adjusting b/w curves). Normal.
4. Background (which I deleted at the end).

What I basically did was to select white areas from layer three and color them in in layer 2. Layer 1, being only half opaque, allows for the shading from the original pencil drawing.

Anyway. Comments anyone?

EDIT: I know some of the edging came out in green when I save it for the web. I was a bit lazy to fix it. Sorry.

Advanced Technical Forum / Countdown clock
Sat 02/10/2004 12:45:22
I'd like my game to take place in ten minutes. If the player can't finish it within that period of time, the game ends and he loses.

For that, I'd like to have a countdown clock in the upper right corner of the screen, so the player knows eactly how long there's left.

I know clocks have been spoken of before, but I'm not sure if this has been done. Ideas?

WOLF COUNTRY is a project I have been working on for a little while.

ARGUMENT

We're back in the late 1700s/early 1800s. Despite the queenship of Goddess Reason, seemingly forgotten phenomena such as witchcraft, necromancy and occultism are still rampant in the civilised world.

You are G. Stracham, a freelance messenger who makes a living out of urgent, and often dangerous, deliveries. During one of your nightmare trips, your mare dies of exhaustion. You are left on your own in the midst of a dark, wolf-infested forest.

When it all seems lost, you find an old mansion where you can spend the night. It belongs to Alistair Carlisle, renowned occultist, who has called a mysterious family meeting. Carlisle believes the last living werewolf is among his guests, and he intends to hunt it...

...tonight!

SCREENIES

A few screenies to show for it.

FEATURING

23 rooms out of which 16 are playable in the first chapter.
A thrilling plot that will make you scream in fear.
Stunning letterbox 320x240 graphics in hi res/hi col.
Copyrighted music and lots of cool sound effects.
The main character named after a Scottish soccer player.

RELEASE

So far I have managed to complete the first chapter (10-11pm). I will release it as soon as I fix a few small bugs I've found.

However, I'm getting to know myself, and I know I will only finish it if I finish it.

CREDITS

Thanks Scorpiorus for the snow/rain plugin, and of course, Pumaman for the engine.

I'm not sure if anyone has experienced this problem.

When I try to run a game in full-screen mode the screen just goes blank, music plays for a little bit, then the window gets minimised and I'm back to the desktop.

Any hints?

I have my inventory GUI on the right hand side of the screen. All game action takes place on the left.

I'd like to display all text as speech, in the LucasArts manner.

However, when the text string gets a bit long, part of it runs behind the inventory, and thus it cannot be read.

Is there a way I can bring the speech text before the inventory?

or else,

Is there a way I can get text to drop to the next line whenever it is about to get behind the inventory?

Cheers,

I hope I have not missed a very obvious solution...

My text windows appear surrounded by blue cups (as if a border).

Why?

How do I get rid of them and just have a line (or nothing at all)?

Just a quickie.

I have a file in midi format, which I would like the game to play every time score is given.

However, AGS does not recognise midi extensions as "sound" files, but as music.

Do you guys know of any free programs out there to convert midi to .wav?

Sorry, perhaps this is a stupid question.

I want to give the player one point for looking at a statue.

However, he keeps getting a point every time he looks at it.

Is there any way (besides defining a global variable for every single "GiveScore" interaction) to avoid this?
#34
Just a quick one.

I'm using the classic sierra KQ5 type interface, where the cursor cycles from one action to another every time the right button is clicked.

That works fine everywhere on screen, except when over the inventory area (which I have at the bottom of the screen, much like Monkey Island and the other LucasArts games).

What basically happens is that when the cursor is over the inventory area, it won't recognise the right mouse button, althought it does recognise the left one. Thus, every time the player wants to look at an inventory object, he needs to drag the mouse outside the inventory, cycle until he gets to the "eye" icon and then drag back into the inventory area and left click on the object.

I'm sure there is a way to cycle the cursor inside the inventory, I just can't find it at the moment. Help anyone?

Thanks.

Hi all,

After a period of inactivity following "Nick it and Run!!!" and "Casablanca, The Day After", AussieSoftTM is back for more.

I have posted the demo of a new game: Book of Destiny (that's the working title, it might change).

The demo itself is pretty self explanatory (or not really, because the argument of the game is quite confusing at the beginning). It's also very short, because it's basically the playable intro of the game.

The screenie:

The demo:

Have a go at it and tell me what you think.

EDIT I'm not sure why the quick link doesn't work, if you cut

www.freewebs.com/aussiesoft/BOD.zip
www.freewebs.com/aussiesoft/BOD.gif

and paste it on your address line it does work.

Just a simple question.

Does AGS currently support multiple inventories for the same character?
#37
Hi all.

Inspired by Igor's work on that superb IGNAC trailer, I've started doing a little bit of animation myself.

These ain't much, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

#38
Inspired by Igor's IGNAC trailer, I've started working a bit more in Flash, which is a pretty easy program to get along with.

I have a question for the experts of the wide world.

What do you reckon is the best way to go from the concept art you've drawn on paper to the screen? (digitizer tablet? scanner? both?)

Also,

For consecutive frames within the same animation, do you usually draw them all by hand or do you just introduce changes to the one you have on screen (these are the two approaches I've tried so far).

Ideas? anyone?

Competitions & Activities / MAGS JULY
Tue 01/07/2003 18:49:34
I got my act together and came up with the rules.

Given that Mittens will be held this month, MAGS should probably be somehow based on the AGS community itself.

Therefore, the only rule is that all MAGS entries must include an "illustrious" member of the AGS community as the main player. The topic is free, although Mittens is probably the most suitable environment.

Critics' Lounge / C&C Haunted house room
Mon 23/06/2003 12:39:30
I'm working on a new game based around a haunted house. I'm just trying to strike the right "style" (if you've played Nick it and Run or Casablanca you'll might recognise my way of drawing rooms).

So far I've tried to recreate the haunte house feeling by putting in a mouse hole, candelabra and a few spider webs.

Still, I think it looks pretty plain.

Please C&C, be harsh.
