Completed Game Announcements / Chick Chaser
Wed 17/08/2005 21:52:03
After awhile of inactivity, AussieSoftTM proudly presents...

Andrew Gourdo is... Chick Chaser

You play Andrew Gourdo, a uni student who has just been dumped by his girlfriend. Your task is to get her back.

Chick Chaser is essentially a romantic comedy, intended as a tribute to the Secret of Monkey Island and Leisure Suit Larry series.

In Chick Chaser, you'll get to...

Experience life at college!

Face the challenges of uni life!

Visit Western Thathurst University!

Meet a load of girls!

FEATURING
- A tearful love story.
- Humor and drama in equal amounts.
- Heavily stereotyped female characters.
- A grand total of 39 rooms.
- Over 100 views.
- Over 450 sprites.
- Over 15 interactable characters.
- Over 15 dialog topics.
- Over 10 GUIS.
- Over 20 inventory items.
- A point-based ranking system.
- A classic graphical adventure interface.
- A bunch of copyrighted midis and sound effects.
- One hidden puzzle.

WARNING: There are a couple of situations in the game that could be interpreted as adult-oriented. However, there is nothing you wouldn't have seen in the first six installments of the Leisure Suit Larry series. If you found those offensive Chick Chaser is not for you. Also, just to be on the safe side, you probably shouldn't play the game if you're under 16 years of age.

So there, if you want to download it, the link is HERE, HERE or HERE (thanks Steve McCrea)

And BTW, it's geoshitties, so it'll be down every now and then. If anybody wants to set up a mirror, that'd be very much appreciated.

Thanks a lot magitz and Daniël Brooks for painstakingly beta testing the game.

That's ok.

Spoiler

BTW I managed to complete the game, it's so unusual it really got me hooked and kept me wanting to play all the way til the end.

- The plot is quite interesting (if a bit gross at times - poor Lucinda and Coppernickel).
- The characters are great and suit the story to a tee (quite a few of them appear to be just fillers though)  ???.
- Animation looks professional and adds a lot of life to the game.
- The puzzles are just right, neither too easy nor too difficult. Still you do need to observe the screen very carefully at times (the damaged window, the magazine, the chord...)
- Ah, one more thing: it may be interesting to add an unhadled event function, so that not so many interactions are missing. But that's up to you.
- Your humor is not my cup of tea, I think it's a bit too dark (which doesn't mean I didn't find the game funny). But I suppose that's just a matter of taste.
- Overall, I'd give it 9 out of 10. Congrats.

Even without the intro, the player is not at a loss. The story flows along very well.

Sorry about playing this version, but anyway, take it as a further beta test. Now that you're at it...

Spoiler

- I've found a little bug. When you use the water on the exposed chord, you end up with a full and an empty cup.

- Also, if you try to speak to Peter after giving him the body, all dialog options have been turned off, so the game crashes.

- The game also crashed on me when I tried to load from the initial screen. I'm not sure if this also happens when you load within the game.

- The load GUI overall doesn't seem to work properly. It sdoesn't seem to record saved games, so I can't use it.

Downloading...
#226
That is great. Congrats.

One thing, wouldn't you put something on top of the shelf? A little lamp, a vase...
#227
I think they have a lot of potential.

There's one thing I see: most of them look as if they're going to fall backwards. Their torso should be about one or two pixels forward. Either that or bend their legs back like Bernard's.
#228
What about books? (or something more wormy)

That shelf looks a bit empty...

I know this isn't the CL, but isn't that portrait in a different resolution than the rest of the pics? It seems like a very different style.

Yeah, you're correct.

I've made closeup pictures at a higher resolution, so the quality is better. Although most graphics are drawn at 320x200, you should play the game at 640x400 to get the most out of it.

(*) Righto, I have two betta testers now. Stay tuned for my next post on the Completed Games forum.

I remember that background of the university (from the CL?) ... I believe I asked if that was a Quidditch pitch!

That's rightÃ,  ;D I remember your comment too!

The girl was also there, but a few months before.

LENGTH
I'm toying with the idea of releasing Chick Chaser as a full-length game. I have a total of 39 rooms, some of which are cutscenes, endscenes and so forth.

I reckon if LSL6 was a full-length game (and if some of those released as full-length are) this one also is.

But anyway, on this particular score I will listen to the opinion of the beta testers.

CALL FOR BETA TESTERS
I was a bad bad boy when I made chapter one of Wolf Country (released as a demo). I called out for beta testers, got them all interested, got their feedback...

And did nothing about it.

That will not happen again. There's an essential difference between Chick Chaser and Wolf Country. This time the game is actually finished, meaning that I'm no longer unsure as to what chapter 2 or 3 would be about, and whether I'd be able to finish the project overall.

Plus I've done some beta testing myself, so that'd save beta-ers a lot of work.

I want to get over and done with this game as soon as possible, so I will only take the first two who offer themselves as beta testers. Of course, beta testers get to be in the credits.

For those wishing to step forward, bear in mind I plan to release the game half way through this coming week (by wednesday or so). If for whatever reason you think you won't be having time in the next couple of days, please abstain.

Takers?

Darth,

Whatever you end up doing, I just have to say I love your style.

It's so bloody awesome.
#233
I've just finished it, and must say I liked it, it's always a fun read.

Spoiler

Still, a few things:

JK Rowling usually finishes her novels quite neatly, like everything falls into place at the end.

But this time, a few things go unexplained:

- What's the go with the Zabini kid? At the beginning of the book, he looks like he's going to play a part, but then he suddenly disappears from the plot.
- The same goes for McLaggen, although he hangs around a bit longer.
- Dobby and Kreacher report to Harry Potter only once, then, when I expected them to come back, they also disappear.
- Why does Slughorn stop throwing parties all of a sudden?
- What happens with the Death Eaters at the end?
- Not to mention the whole thing with the false Horcrux and all that.

I guess some of these have to do with the fact that the 6th and 7th books are meant to be a unit.

Other stuff:

I found the lucky potion to be the easy way out for JK (in regard to Harry having to recover Slughorn's memory), and that she could not be stuffed about the Quidditch comp this time around.

Besides. there are some characters who look like fillers to me, like Greyback, or even Scrimgeour.

Finally, I think the author has gone a bit overboard with the romance bit (Lupin/Tonks, Harry/Ginny, Fleur/Bill, Ron/Hermione, Malfoy/Pansy, Luna/Neville(?)) and the way she "carries" these stories... I think she could have got much more out of them. For instance, the way Harry and Ginny get together! Using the lucky potion to break up Ginny and Dean is just too easy and the kiss after the Quidditch was a bit of an anticlimax, wasn't it? I would have expected something a bit more elaborated.

Still, as I said, I enjoyed it.
#234
Got it. Thanks a lot.

Silly me, stupid question.
#235
Just a question, I guess it's pretty basic but I'm useless at programming.

I have an intro scene, which I'd like to take place every time the game is started, and which leads to the title screen. However, I suppose that can get a bit annoying or people who have already played the game before.

How do I do it so that by pressing ESC I get over the scene?

Cheers.

BTW, I'm not using the OO AGS version, I'm using the previous one.

Daemons in the Attic!!! Now, that's a blast from the past.

Great to see that project wasn't dropped. The demo looked awesome. I still have in on my hard drive.

I love that Bev sprite. Just one small comment for the front view: as it is, it looks a tiny bit too symmetrical.

As opposed to boys, girls usually have a more stylish standing pose, that is, they usually lean to one of the sides. Her hand on her heap might also be a good effect.

*One thing... In Spain just 20 % of the people recognises they had read it. 20% voted no. Curious...

That's sneaky Farl!Ã,  ;D

20% out of the TOTAL population recognise they've read it.
20% out of those who actually bothered to vote (only 6% of the ellectorate) actually said 'no'.

Spaniards passed the EU Constitution with an all-time low participation in a referendum (30%). Still, about 8 in 10 of those Spaniards who actually voted said 'yes'.

Politicians pushing for yes and no both claimed victory. The former argued that 80% of the vote was 'yes', while the latter said 'that's only because 70% of the people couldn't care less about it'.

However, the fact is Spaniards are quite sick of voting at the moment. Most of them have been to the polls three times in the last 18 months. After controversial regional ellections and pretty traumatic national ellections, this referendum was perceived as low-key by many.

Granted. The Constitution probably does not contribute much. But the fact is that the country has taken off in the last 20 years or so, and that is largely coincidental with Spain's adhesion to Europe (1986). Even if this is arguable, I think it partly explains why Spain passed the Constitution.

Still, a lot of people in Spain feel the process was rushed in order to be the first country to pass it. There has been controversy on this issue all over the papers these days.

-----------------

The French? As someone said, it looks like their 'no' was pretty much a punishment vote towards Chirac. Still, Europe is not possible without France, so eventually someone will have to come up with something to let them in.

-----------------

The Dutch and the British? We'll see what happens. The British might even save themselves the trouble.

Now that a pretty hefty 'no' stands in the way, I think more countries will feel free to say no (or even avoid the referendum altogether). Particularly those who feel that their voice is usually overheard.

The animation is excellent.

But I think it's more of a boy walk than of a girl walk.

Perhaps just put little icon (as an object) on the locations you can visit.

Say it's a carpenter. Just make a little green circle with a hammer inside.

Otherwise the lights on/off idea sounds good to me.
