Messages - big brother

Almost, Big Bro, but it's actually: "I'll skewer you as a saw at a buffét!" (Or something like that, it's been awhile since I played MI3)

Hahaha... If only that insult made sense! Silly Lucasarts! They should have kept Ron Gilbert.

The orange thing was Guybrush way to stop Haggis, Cutthroat Bill and Van Helgan's song since the word "orange" is a very difficult word to rhyme.

Umm...yeah...That was my joke. Since there technically isn't a word in the English language that rhymes with "orange", an insult ending with that word would be unstoppable on the high seas. Hence, "I will skewer you like an orange!"

Guybrush just wasn't clever enough to figure that one out.

the Master of Furry

I may be alone here, but this title scares me.

Ooh, good call. I don't think the fox's paws would fit in high heels either. Time to return to the source, and boot up the old Google Image search.

Ok, after spending about half an hour perusing foxy ladies from the blaxploitation movies of the 70s, I found this!

Surprisingly, a real fox looks nothing like the sprite!

Intrigued, I continued my search, and made a startling discovery:

It would seem that real foxes are like snowflakes; no two are alike! I'm not just talking about the color, either. Look how flat they look in that last photo! It's almost as if God was experimenting with a new medium!

Now I'm not sure whether my Google Searches are just turning up fox porn, but I have yet to find any photos of a fox wearing any clothing at all! Actually, I couldn't find any standing poses. I guess the internet-surfing guy foxes have a real thing for the doggy style positions!

Looks like it's major rework time for you, DonB! (And all of us with paintovers, too. Man, we were all way off!)

While you're at it, InC, you might want to fix the perspective on these pictures, too.

If the swordfight is on the high seas, the comeback must rhyme with the insult.

"I will skewer you like an orange!"

Wow...ummm...that's so wrong. Permission is not dependent upon whether the game is commercial or not. Making profit off your game has very little to do with it (it's up to the legal possessors of the intellectual property either way).

Safe answer: read my earlier post, but if you decide not to solely use art in the public domain, get permission from the rights holders in writing (including clauses for fair use, etc.).

You could try running the program in a window via DOSbox or something, then use the Photoshop "printscreen" feature (screencap). It's a bit tedious though.

Hmmm...Loom is a hard game to follow up. You're setting your sights pretty high. It's like making a fan sequel to Grim Fandango.

As per request, here's an edit.
I may have gotten carried away and taken the sprite in a totally different style, but what the hell.

2x zoom, 11 colors

Implemented a few suggestions. I'm thinking this is close to final.

I would really like to see this game in action (even bare bones with placer art and stuff)! It's all about the simple rhythm of the gameplay.

What's a boop?

This sprite needs some work. The curves are very shaky and some of the outlines (in the latest edit) are inconsistent. I almost prefer the first picture you posted over the latest (although the curve problems still exist in that one, the color ramp differences are a little less aggressive).

I actually had a similar idea for the turn-based, but simultaneous action solution for a game like JA. The character's experience level would affect how they could react realtime. For instance, if both players ordered their characters to run around the corner of a building and occupy the same spot, the more experienced merc would get the drop on the newbie. As a result, veteran firefighters would improvise on the orders when things went wrong, or when they came across enemies.
#354
You're trying too hard. Like that poprockmetal classic band, Papa Roach sings/says, "my weakness is that I care too much." So true, Papa, so true.
#355
The top step and the door frame are good additions. Should both doorways be the same width?
#356
I know the boat seems flat. An earlier comment suggested that the boat should be more of a focal point than it is in the original background. I guess it's a trade-off.
Sean, you're right about the pier legs. What exactly is a "tide line"? Should I try to draw a reflection of the legs to make it look less like they're on top of the water?

Andail, thanks for the post! I never really thought about parallel lines in the single vanishing point perspective. You're definitely right about it creating unecessary tension in the first background.

Take a step back from your work and look at it from a distance. You're getting too caught up with rivets and eyelashes.

Right now, it looks like each part was drawn separately with great attention to detail. Nothing quite seems to fit with everything else.

The gun seems to be at a perfect profile, while everything else looks like it's at an angle. The left arm is shorter than the right, the knees look like macaroni pasta rather than a joint.

If she's sitting on that crate at an angle, her left shoulder would be higher because you're looking down at her. Her head and other parts should be turned to fit the angle rather than being straight on. It might be worthwhile to invest in one of those wooden dummies (they can sit still much longer than a real model) to get the feeling of drawing figures in 3d space.

Don't be tempted to overwork the details to compensate for the anatomy or composition.

I think this is an improvement over some of your other work, as you're trying to portray a more natural pose and you didn't rush to ink this one.
#358
Ok, total overhaul.

- Dropped the GUI for now, so I can focus more on the art style.

- Tried to use more colors, making it less of a purple tone overall.

- Implemented a central perspective that can be kept consistent for every background.

- Made a variation on the player character sprite.

Thoughts, comments, fears, or concerns?
#359
It's still very flat. Maybe try simplifying the shading so you can get a good feel for the volume of the shapes.

Those are cats??? The text underneath says "newsFELCH" so I just automatically assumed it was...you know, obscene.
