Messages - big brother

Okay, this is really quick and dirty (could only spend about an hour on it), but here's my take on the sprite. I started doing it as a mini tutorial, but I ran out of time (and patience :P ).

Here's a brief explanation:

1. Quick silhouette drawn with a size 2 brush.
2. Flipped figure, refined borders.
3. Picked some colors for the shading, started filling out highlights (and flipped back).
4. More of step 3 (flipped again).
5. Everything is in this step. Lots of pixel pushing and fiddly thing (flipped again).

The way it ended up, I don't think it's very usable for the game (it's too detailed to animate easily), but maybe it can serve as a reference for a more dynamic pose. As far as the anatomy goes, his head is too big and his legs are probably too short. I'm not very happy with his feet either. Damn, the more I think about it, the less I like my version. Grrrrr.

Actually, it's plain horrible. I should really draw a better one if I have time. Sorry to rasie your hopes.

I don't have a problem with the no clothes thing, but you should base his anatomy on reference photos or sketches from real life rather than Eric's template. I would be more than happy to do a quick paintover to show you exactly what i mean if you want to post the sprite alone, full size.

Perhaps your could exaggerate your light source and accentuate the shadows. Also, it would be nice if the hues varied a little. Right now, everything is brown and it's not very interesting to look at.

Try to guess the reincarnation...

Spoiler
It's Ben Throttle, reincarnated as a soccer dad. To make things worse, he drives a minivan! A MINIVAN!

Wow, a lot of good entries early on, and then things tapered off. Although Farlander, Floksfinger, and Krysis all posted solid entries, I'm going to have to go with Darth on this one. A very creative choice, and a sax player, too!

Congrats!

General Discussion / Re: Autodesk Animator

Animator Pro is the best one (DOS, 320x200 primarily but can run other resolutions). This was my favorite art program, since it never crashed and had so many good features (great pallette management, animation, etc.).

On a side note, I worked as a beta-tester on Animator Studio (which was intended to be a Windows port, but with more features, highcolor, and music and sound), but that program was far inferior.

I'm not sad KQ9 was canceled. It would've sucked anyways*.

I stumbled across this mod for a sidescrolling fighter named "Beats of Rage."

I'll let the pictures do the talking.

I would like to do a paintover, but I'd need to scale it down to a 1:1 ratio. What's the image's original size?

For the record, a copyright can last up to 95 years (thank you, Mickey Mouse) as long as it's work held by a corporate authorship. Before the Copyright Extension Act of 1998, a copyright only existed 50 years after the death of its author. This act tacked on an extra 20 years (45 to some corporations). In addition, this act retroactively increased the protection of works created prior to 1/1/78.

This act almost seemed tailored specifically for Disney's Mickey Mouse. Even though Walt stole the idea from Kinoko, anyways.

As for KQ9, I don't think they need to scrap the project, just tweak some things and add some biting jokes against Vivendi. After all, they don't hold the rights to popular kid's stories. But even the idea of unifying lots of fairy tales in one bigger story is far from new -- children's books have been doing that long before Roberta Williams was old enough to use a typewriter without soiling her diaper.

I think the KQIX team could have chosen a better idea for a game.

I'm surprised Vivendi hasn't approached AGDI yet, especially considering the publicity they got for the KQ remakes. Maybe they're next on the hit list.

Perhaps you could work in some hue changes around the grass and the water (especially on the highlights). As it is, only the value varies (except for the orange lighting).

My apologies for not posting this thread sooner (my thinking cap had a flat tire).

The contest of this week is:

Draw a musician sprite

!

Your sprite must depict a musician playing or holding an instrument. You could choose a famous musician, like Boner from Yoo-Too holding a microphone, or you could invent one, like Gigatron, the android with two souls who plays the toms on the dried skulls of his enemies. I just made the last one up, so please don't steal it (I may have other plans for it).Ã,

Also, I will frown upon any entry that takes liberties with the word "instrument." I am referring to music, so don't draw a scalpel or anything else that would stretch the rules.

At maximum, the sprites can be 100x100 with 32 colors.

Critics' Lounge / Re: the wizard (again)

It's going to look a bit strange in the game since your sprite has specific lighting. If it doesn't match the lighting sources in your backgrounds it will be especially noticeable.

Wow! Thanks so much. Great competition and good entries all around.

Man, it'll be tough to invent rules that can hold a lantern to these!

I know this isn't the critic's lounge, but her hair color (and the shading on it) reminds me a lot of Sophia from FOA.

I think the movie is called "Waiting". You know, since it's about waiting tables. Working tables would be something else, I think.

I actually want to see this movie, although I think it'll suck unless Dane Cook plays a fairly large role. I went to Tourgasm and have never laughed so hard...

You don't need to know the language to win this game. Trust me.

I think your darkest shade on the pants needs to have a lower value. In the side view it would help show which leg is closest to the screen.

I posted a few examples of side view walkcycles here: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=22707.0

I'm reminded of those sages known as the Eagles.

Loose cannon on deck!

A proper pirate ship needs a gunner (or gun-mistress) and a cannon. Otherwise, the ship couldn't accomplish much terrorizing (a prerequisite for piracy).

200x120 (2x zoom), 12 colors

Dr. Freud would have a field day with this one.
