Critics' Lounge / Re: My new character

Actually, I prefer the original to any of the paintovers so far.

The original conveys a better sense of strength. He has a more dynamic pose, with his confident smile and his hand on his belt.

However, you should make sure that the pixel size remains constant. It seems that the entire image was scaled up to 200%, then you drew in details.

Thought of a few more problems:

Spoiler
William ejected the escape pod before you could get to them to prevent you from escaping because he needed your body. Wouldn't it be more likely that you would've been sucked out, leaving him without a body anyways? Sounds like an improbable gamble...

I finished the game without destroying the idol. Wouldn't this have grave implications for a sequel???

Also, you can destroy the idol multiple times, as it never leaves your inventory.

At the end, I'm assuming that the hand that comes out of the box is from the body that WIlliam stitched together. If that's the case, where did the physical body of the welder that I killed come from?

Confusing...

Darth:

This puzzle frustrated me because it was obviously poorly thought out. In the several seconds before you die, you must USE the lever to close hatch C. Since the player character is nowhere near a position to move that lever, it doesn't really make any sense, but oh well.

A few bugs and design flaws I encountered in addition to those mentioned all ready...(in no particular order)

Spoiler
After seeing the animation of Serena's body falling out, and Serena's body (?) in the doorway of your office, you can go back to the hallway, and there's an object called 'Serena' in the black space past your door.

When Adam is on the observatory deck, and you try to USE the bloody food tray with him, no interaction occurs. But if you talk to him, you can mention it.

If William lives alone, why is there a bunk bed (and two lockers) in his room? Just a lazy artist thing?

If I try using the severed hand (is that a Flashbax nod?) with William once I'm strapped into the chair, I get this error:
Global line 417, Error: AnimateCharacter: invalid loop number specified.

Why shouldn't I be able to use the machete for defense once I know the Captain's Zombie (?) is wandering the deck? Oh, my bad, I wouldn't want to ruin the "evidence". Heh.

The whole safety rail bit was really tedious. Maybe once you do it correctly, the player character could automatically do it. No point in forcing repetition on the player.

When the Welder "catches" you, the GUI becomes disabled and the game halts, but does not end (no game over pic).

If the Welder is chasing you in the Reactor room, and you hide in the shadows, he walks past and stops in the left doorway. From that point on, nothing you do can make him move, and you can't get by him.

You should be able to find out the Captain's birthday in the crew profiles in your desk.

On Saturday, even if you override the residence doors, you can't enter William's room again.

Anyways, there may be more stuff I missed, but this one from one playing of the game.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that this may be the most disturbing image I have been exposed to all day. And the fact that reference photos were involved only makes it worse.

I am particularly confused by the two dimples on either side of the gaping mouth on the creature's abdomen.

It seems like this competition requires more than just spriting abilities. Maybe it should be called a "scene jam".
#706
I would go with much smaller sprites, like those used in FOA. They will be easier to animate while still conveying the realism you want. The guy you have right now looks kind of generic and cartoony. If you want to stick with what you have, I'd definitely up the contrast a notch.

Not sure I'm following this. Dorcan's WIP background looks great so we all have a big circle jerk???

You can love something and think its great and all that rubbish, but still offer some constructive criticism (the entire point of the Critic's Lounge existence). Saying that you saw the background and dropped dead is a nice compliment, but it really doesn't help Dorcan.

The "r6.pcx" one did work. It's a fairly large file for a background (250 kbs+).

Arrrggg....

I'm partial to "Knightsbridge Chronicles" as the name. It sounds much more serious (and dark) then "There Goes the Neighborhood" (which sounds like the title of a sitcom).

I don't think it matters too much how serious the first game you make is. There will always be people who will kill off your main character in a German Expressionist manner.

I like the general idea, though Filth City sounds more like a crappy porno title to me...

I think that to pull it off convincingly, you'll need to give every character a personality and a backstory.

Also, killing 497 people puts every mass murderer in history to shame. I doubt building a town would help cover that up at all? I mean, don't these victims have families? If that happened, I think a media feeding frenzy would be far more likely.

Ok, seeing as it's the 5th today...
Time for the judgment!

Man, I had no idea hosting these competitions would be so tough to call. If it were up to me, you'd all win, but this competition's rules don't allow for that.

Here are my impressions (sorry to draw this out, but I wanted to recognize everyone for the work they did):

Redwall: It's a good, solid sprite. I like the clean lines and lack of double pixels. However, as you mentioned, it is not the most creative concept I've seen.

InCreator: I love the realism this sprite exudes. The shaded quality of the image is great, and the concept seems like a reasonable extrapolation of our current technology. Great work!

Earlwood: Your concept was both creative and humorous, though it's more of an object than an actual sprite. Very nice execution.

Viktor: Very dynamic scene you made. Lots of movement, from the arch of the policeman's body to the explosion on the left. For some reason, his left leg is a bit disconcerting.

Preparación De Ensalada: Funny, but not really a sprite. The lettering below the RIP is a little hard to read.

JudgeDeadd: Sorry, but the link to your image seems to be broken.

Tanker: Very creative, but the execution could use a bit of a boost. With a more dynamic pose, fewer double-pixels, and a different color scheme, you could be really on to something.

TikiTikiMan: Great work! I like the focus on the actual vehicle. I could definitely see this one in a game.

Wreck: The future looks like a good place to live. I like the style, though you worked within the restraints of a traditional cop uniform (yes, it is sexier, but the same hat, color, etc.).

Privateer Puddin': I like your concept, though I would've preferred it to been a bit more "pixel art" like.

Opo Terser: I love the Dr. Seuss quality you've captured with this one. Very whimsical execution of a funny concept.

DragonRose: An excellent derivitive work; you've really captured Wreck's style in this one.

Zootyfruit: Armor plating is always the way to go. I would have liked to see a little more contrast in the shading, though.

SierraFreak: I like the color contrast of this robocop. He strikes me as a bit too symmetrical and the lighting on his left side is inconsistent (minor).

TheSaint: Funny South Park reference. I hope the cops of the future aren't like Cartman.

Geoffkhan: The cartoony cop constrasts well against the realistically shaded vehicle. I'm not sure why there would be flames coming out of the exaust when he's not riding the bike. The bunny slippers are definitely sweet.

My favorite entries were:

InCreator's, TikiTikiMan's, Wreck's, Opo Terser's, and Geoffkhan's.

Since there can be only one, I chose:

Opo Terser's

This original idea was nicely executed and made me smile.

It's hilarious, just like every other RON game by Dave.
#713
Wow, you put a lot of work into it!

I think it jerks because of the one frame you have at the beginning. During the animation, her body leans forward and then when it loops, it looks like her head and upper body snap back into position.
#714
Ok, so the other day, I was running from the police, and I had a thought. What do you think the police force will look like in 20 years? 100 years?

Will they ride speeder bikes like SW stormtroopers or will they ride Keystone Kops bicycles? Will they wear armor like Robocop's or like the primates wore in Planet of the Apes? Will they be the officers of a highly trained facist society or a rag-tag post-apocalyptic group?

The name of the game is: Draw a futuristic cop!

Try to be as creative as possible!

Restrictions:

Colors: max 64
Size: Any

Good luck and have fun!

You're brilliant. What a novel design. Come to Baltimore at once.

I loved the game. Despite its natural bias against Roger (who I was playing), I managed to beat my brother by over 100 points to win. And he passed the finish line first.

Out of curiosity, how many ducks does anyone usually kill on average?
#716
I'd say leave him as he is without shading. Just remember the Curse of Monkey Island. Cel-style sprites work really well against complex backgrounds.

One thing I noticed: The wrong side of the axe is bloody! The way he has swung the axe, the other blade would have been the cutting one  ;D

If he just rotated his upper body along with the swing, you're right.
But if he does a baseball swing, the axe actually turns, so the image would be correct.

Here's my entry. A little gory, but I figure that it's justified.

128x128, 21 colors, 200% zoom

Cheers.

Hmmm...still thinking about the spirit's new color. Does anyone think the rust color makes him look demonic? You could always go with a cute pink or a baby blue...

P.S. Demonic is bad.

Cool, now he needs an armor codpiece. In case he plays baseball or something, the family jewels will be secure.

Unless of course they get hit with an evil monk's warhammer.

Wouldn't "Crushed Armor Codpieces" be a great name for a rock band?
