Part 5 of my RPG tutorial is now up:

http://opinionsandcreations.ning.com/profiles/blogs/ags-rpg-tutorial-part-five

This is the hardest of all the tutorials as it discusses the battle system. I have checked it very thoroughly but if you find any mistakes, omissions or just do not understand certain parts, let me know.

Actually HammerBlade, the reason why I haven't posted in a while is because I was foolish enough to try and redo the tutorial frm scratch in 3.1. This is taking me forever  :P

I have a semi-complete tutorial on the battle system for AGS 2.6 which I will tidy up and post soon.

Hi KhrisMUC, I did think about this when I started but as I mentioned in the tutorial, the game the tutorial is based on was started before AGS 2.71 was released.

Whilst I am a big advocate of OO programming (being a C# programmer by trade), I did not want to write a tutorial in AGS 3.1 as I have not used AGS 3.1 yet.

I do think my tutorial will still serve as a good starting point for anyone wanting to create an AGS RPG . Some of the code might be obsolete but the underlying methodology is still correct.

As I am quite far in the tutorial, I don't really want to change the code at this time but if there is enough demand, I will create a 3.1 version of the code at a later date.

As for the indentation, I've become lazy from Intellisense  :P I will amend the tutorials to make them cleaner.

Thanks Trent R, I just wasn't sure whether 4 posts days apart should be in the same window or not. Consider this post my placeholder for all future parts of the tutorial  ;D

Part 5 will be up later today and is easily the most complex part of the tutorial.

Part four of the tutorial is now up:

http://opinionsandcreations.ning.com/profiles/blogs/ags-rpg-tutorial-part-four

I have also rectified an error in part 3: References to globalint 53 should have been globalint 1, sorry if this stumped anyone  :P

Part five will be up tomorrow.

Here is the first part of my RPG tutorial:

Part 2 will be up this evening. I hope some of you find it useful.

I created an RPG with AGS and having played about with RPG maker and its ilk before, I can tell you that AGS is a far better tool for it. Not wanting to start a flame war or anything but the RPG-centric creation tools are just too narrow-minded and it is very hard to create something unique or original. AGS is far more flexible.

On another note, I am currently working on a tutorial for creating a RPG with AGS. Watch this space...

Moebius picture. The guy is a legend.

The Bridge
-------------
It hasn't stopped yet. I thought it would by now but it just don't happen this way, innit?
That'd just be too easy.
Bugger.
Round the next corner and up the street.
Torrance fucked me right up, that old bastard.
"it'll only take a minute. You just give me your share and i'll sort it out."
Sort it out, my arse. He knew. He bloody well knew and he just took my money anyway.
I could go back and give him a piece of my mind but he ain't the type of guy you mess around with.
So why did I mess around with him? I'm such a fucking idiot.
Who else was I supposed to get it from? What was I supposed to do? Gerald reckoned it was a sure thing, that git.
There's the bridge. Okay, not THE bridge, there are other bridges around but tis the only bridge worth using.
The view from here is just majestic. You don't just see the local slumps from here but you can make out the beautiful palaces out in the distance. And the air.
Ah the air, this is the only place where the air feels like it has been somewhere natural on its way to your lungs.
Gotta love that clean feeling.
Deep breath. Well, trying to anyway, the cough comes on pretty strong and I spit a little blood.
I'm gonna have to do this now. Before it really sinks in and I chicken out.
Deep breath. One little step is all it takes in the end. And I was flying. It felt incredible.
Well, right up till I hit the tarmac then it fucking well hurt.
For a moment.
Just for a moment. then I swear I could feel the clean air again.

Expect an announcement around February time where I'll probably ask for help from the community with testing as it's going to be one hell of a job! Not so much bugs-wise but with adjusting the difficulty level / amounts of experience received from kills / the quality of the trade economy / the levelling-up system and more...

The game has evolved so much in the last year, the demo is not really representative of the game anymore which is why i decided to take it down.

But don't worry, if everything goes to plan, there should be a little surprise just in time for christmas  ;D

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm well on the way to finishing the first chapter and the second instalment should not take that long now that the underlying layer is complete  ;D

I'll make an announcement (hopefully in January) about beta testing, so keep your ears peeled  :)

Okay, forget about the above post. It may not have been as speedy an update as I had hoped! The good news is the first chapter of Valis is near completion. The game currently contains:

- an engrossing, epic storyline.
- over 20 types of monsters.
- 11 different towns with many different places to visit from shops to gambling dens.
- loads of NPCs to interact with.
- a fully working magic system with upgradable powers.
- a trading system between towns, Elite-style.
- a job system where you can choose side-missions ranging from easy jobs with little rewards to full-length adventures for the big gains.
- many different types of weapons, armours and life-enhancing accessories.
- a massive world map to explore with many secrets to discover.
- a tile-based dungeon system with treasures and boss fights.

Story: 100%
Graphics: 75%: some monster graphics left and backgrounds for 3 towns.
Music: 100%
Scripting: 80%: mostly inventory parameters left.
Testing: 25%: Believe or not but this will take a while :p
ETA: March 2008

Oh wow, its been over a year since the last update! Sorry about that guys, the game is still going if anyone wants to know. Update-wise, I dont know where to begin. there are now 5 playable characters (any 3 at any one time during the battles), 5 different powers for all 4 power types, 7 new towns, a lot of progress on the story, side-missions, fully-working shops, and a LOT of non-player characters. I reckon I am about 1/3 of the way finishing the whole game and 75% of the way towards finishing the first chapter (the game will be split into 3 manageable chapters).

I promise the next update will not take that long  ;D

Finished it. What an awesome game! Best of the Trilby trilogy so far.

and also:

Spoiler
if you type LOOK during the basement nightmare with the welder, Trilby says  "why, father, why?" which I thought was a nice touch :)

I love the rules. Very inspiring. I don't know if I'll have time to do an entry but I will try  ;D

Okay, so there's only one frame to this one but that's what came to my head when I thought about bittersweet gothic: A girl who pretends she's tough but deep down she's still a little girl.
