Site & Forum Reports / Play in browser issues
Wed 26/02/2025 20:53:38
I'm not sure if this is an AGS site issue or web build issue or an issue with my game. Let's find this out and then move the thread where it belongs.
@eri0o You might know more :)

I added the web build of Mr Bear to the game page (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/play/game/2369/).

PC - Windows - Firefox/Edge
When I click "Play in Browser" a new page opens and my game is loaded. The intro animation is shown, but without sound. Then, the next room is shown. The character should say a sentence and afterwards the game should start. However, the talking animation is played, but I hear no voice acting. Even more problematic is the fact that the talk animation does not stop and the rest of the game does not continue. This changes, once I click inside the game. Suddenly I can hear the audio and the animation stops, I can play the game just like the windows build.

Android - DuckDuckGo (my phone)
My phone is apparently too old, it doesn't even load. Let's ignore this.

Android - Firefox (raeff's phone)
It's the same as with PC-browser. When the intro is over (without sound), the character again says his sentence but without voice acting. The only thing that is possible to do in this situation is to click the cogwheel in the corner, this will fix the game. Just clicking in the screen doesn't do anything. When clicking anywhere in the screen during the intro sequence, this will fix the game as well.

So my assumption is, that the game has to be clicked/activated before it runs correctly. Would it be possible to do this automatically on page load or something?

The only other game that has this feature activated is https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/play/game/2824/ and here also the music only starts to play when activating the game window with a click.
If direct activation from the site itself is not possible, maybe the game shouldn't start but show a button "Start game" or similar to make sure the game is running in a valid state.

Every year, the AGS community embarks on a quest to find the best games made in the last year. All games are eligible, that were added to the AGS Database in the year 2024. There is a For Your Consideration thread where authors can promote their games and players get a good overview what might be worth playing.

The awards are a two-step process: First there is a nomination phase where all(*) community members can nominate the eligible games in several categories. The top five games of each category make it to the voting (as long as they've received at least five nominations). During voting, all(*) members of the community can vote for their favourite games.
The final result is then announced in a live ceremony that can be joined either with a special client or any regular irc client.

* Attention:
Last year we had the case that one game author asked friends and students to register and nominate their game. While this was not strictly forbidden by the rules, it is definitely not appreciated. The AGS awards are for and by the AGS community and not a competition for mobilizing your fans.

So, for this year, only accounts who registered before 2025 are allowed to nominate and vote. If you are a long term member of Discord but didn't have a forum account, yet, please contact me, we might be able to figure this out for you.

The categories will stay the same as last year

Party like it's 1990 in this thread!

Have you made a game in 2024 and want it to compete in the AGS Awards 2024? This is the topic where to showcase it!
Post a database link, a brief description and some pictures (thumbnails preferred, here is an excellent FYC post from last year).

Wow, it's mid of December already! Time to prepare for next AGS Awards  :)

Did you make a game in 2024 but have not added it to the database, yet? Don't forget to add it in time.
If you are not a game author but know about AGS games that don't have a database entry, you can contact the authors and remind them. There are (virtual) trophies waiting for the winners!
Only games that were added to the database in 2024 are eligible for the AGS Awards 2024!

Welcome to another installment of puzzle-making practice, where you decide the solution!

The Rules!

Participants respond to the set-up by writing entries that must do the following:
1. Use at least 3 of the provided elements (inventory, NPCs, a piece of the room like a cabinet or faucet etc.)
2. Give a step-by-step walkthrough of your puzzle solution.
3. Don't add new elements. For example, if the room is a forest, breaking a thin branch off a tree makes sense unless the host said the trees were huge and tall. But adding a hollowed-out stump with a bear sleeping in it is too specific. Assume all important elements have been mentioned by the host.
4. Keep any dialog elements summarized rather than typing out the whole conversation (for example, "threaten the mailman", "ask the child for advice", and so on, instead of giving every spoken line).

Each contest runs for two weeks to allow for a good number of entries, and then it switches to voting for one week. The participant whose solution gets the most votes gets to come up with the next scenario! (Please also provide a link to these rules).

Voters use the criteria of:
a) how logical the puzzle seems
b) how creative or unexpected (but still sensible) is the use of elements
c) how satisfying is the solution (Is it too simple? Way too complicated? Or just right?)

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO:

LOST IN SPACE

You wake up from a loud alarm tone. What happened? You get up and look around the room.

- The door to your room is sealed. The door controls indicate decompression outside.
- Through the window you see many escape pods heading to a close-by planet.
- Your own escape pod is still attached to the ship, the door is closed.
- The bathroom door is sealed as well.
- There are two beds - yours and your comrade's who is working the current shift and hopefully in one of the pods you see outside.
- A maid robot holding a spray bottle and feather duster is standing in a corner, turned off.
- On your desk you see a photo of your cat and a multitool with ion cutter, magnetic screw driver and laser toothpick.
- On your comrade's desk you see a photo of her and her partner sitting on top of Mount XuhPlym27.
- In the closet there are a few sets of spare uniforms.
- On the walls, close to the ceiling, there are several vents.
- Embedded into a wall, there is a food replicator.
- Next to it there is a large touch panel. On closer inspection you see the following menus, some of them having a (!) mark to indicate an error.  There is also no uplink to the stellar-net, you are restricted to the local system.
  - Food replicator (!)
  - Maid bot (!)
  - Climate control (!)
  - Galaxypedia
  - Pong
  - ጸᛗᡇΘஇᐆ
  - Escape pod (!)
- You are wearing your space pajamas.

Your goal is to leave the ship using the escape pod.

Instead of the rather inventory heavy puzzles from previous rounds, I wanted to try something different. Be creative about what causes the malfunctions of the control panel (Password required? Something stuck somewhere? No power?). I'm looking forward to your puzzles!

Entries accepted through July 7th.

Good luck!

Hello fellow gamers and game designers!

I really enjoyed the last AGS awards - there was a lot of activity, many different games won an award and the ceremony was a great party!

End of last year, we had a discussion about how to change the awards to increase participation and make lives easier for all involved people:
https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/adventure-related-talk-chat/ags-awards-2023-the-future-of-the-awards/

I now want to look back on the changes and how they affected the awards. I would also like to get your feedback.

The main points we wanted to tackle were low interest in the awards and the ceremony. This has significantly improved. I don't know it was only because of the threat to stop doing it or if the changes we did helped.
The changes in detail:

Reduced categories

We reduced the number of categories. Did this make nominations and voting easier for you? One side effect was a shorter ceremony, which was actually a good thing.

Tighter schedule
Fixed nomination and voting periods and an early ceremony helped to keep it together. Was there still enough time for you?

Filtered list for nominations
Showing only games that are eligible for a certain category (demo, non-adventure, short, freeware) hopefully made nominations easier.

Simplified resources for ceremony
We wanted to reduce effort for creating the awards ceremony. Kastchey told me it went much smoother this year, so I think we should stick to this.

What did you like/not like about the last AGS awards?

@Kastchey I'm stuck again. So instead of spamming the MAGS thread, I open a thread here.

Here we go!

Stranded

Premise: It could have been such a nice vacation. Sitting on a tropical beach, sipping a cocktail, reading a book (digital detox!) but then you had the glorious idea of renting a glass-bottom boat. Maybe you should have listened to the guy at the boat rental, warning you about the approaching storm. Well, you didn't. Now you are stranded on a tiny island with no land in sight.

You are wearing:
  • A baseball cap
  • Sunglasses
  • A T-shirt
  • Shorts. In the pockets you find
    • a wet lighter and
    • the keys to your hotel room attached to a bulky metal keychain.
  • A flip-flop on your left foot (you lost the right one and instead got a small bleeding wound on your right toe)
  • A wrist watch (still working, hooray for Swiss quality)
  • Underwear (can't be used for the puzzle, but we want to stay decent in case you have to take off your shirt or shorts ;-) )

On the island you see:
  • Sand. Lots of it.
  • A single palm tree. There are some cryptic characters and an "x" (or is it a heart?) carved in the trunk.
  • A few coconuts high up in the palm tree, out of reach
  • A parrot sitting on top of the palm tree, mocking you from above
  • Your glass-bottom boat. The general structure is a bit skewed but still intact. The glass-floor, however, is broken, with only a few shards still sticking out from the frame. The outboard motor is missing. On the boat there is a water-proof box, that has survived the storm. In it you find
    • a lifebuoy
    • 5m rope
    • a diving mask with snorkel
    • a nautical chart of the area
    • a half-empty plastic bottle with lukewarm coke
    • a paperback thriller
    • a volleyball

In the water you see:
  • A few pearl oysters in the shallow water close to the beach
  • A school of fish occasionally passing by
  • A hungry shark, circling the island in some distance
  • Two playful dolphins
  • A large cargo ship at the horizon

Your goal is to escape from the island and return to your hotel and pool bar.
You can use all items on and around the island, including an optional single item you can dig up.

Today I finally created a "Completed games announcement" thread for my game but was not able to figure out the thread id to link it in the database entry. Where can I find it?
I noticed that most (all?) recent games don't have links, probably because noone could find the thread id.

Completed Game Announcements / Apfelmännchen

Apfelmännchen
(literally "little apple man", a German name for the Mandelbrot set)

Did you drink from your Klein bottle again? How else did you end up as Apfelmännchen in a world full of mathematical references? But now that you are here, you can just as well take over the world.

Made for MAGS January 2024, theme "Trippy"

The idea for this game stems from a childhood memory. When I was little, my father had a software on our i386 that could draw Mandelbrot sets with colorful patterns around the black figure. I had no idea what this actually was about (and I still don't fully understand it now), but I loved to watch that pattern animating with some kind of palette rotation. The MAGS theme reminded me of this. I know, this game is probably not for everyone, but I hope at least some people will find enjoyment in it.

The graphics were heavily inspired by (but not living up to) newwaveburritos' work. I've never worked in EGA palette before but it was fun.

I rated a game and added a comment while doing so. When I used the "change your votes" I was able to get back to the form. The comment field was empty. When I changed my rating and saved, suddenly my comment was empty. I would expect instead one of the following:
- The comment stays the same, as not related to the rating
- The comment belongs to the rating and is shown again in the "change your votes" screen

This year, we have made a few changes to how the awards work, so please read carefully!

The main changes to last year are:

Schedule
There is going to be a tighter schedule this year. Nominations start already NOW and last till the end of January. The voting will start a few days after closing the nominations. In the next few days I will create a poll to find a date for the ceremony that suits as many people as possible.

Categories
We unified the art categories (background art, character art, animation) into Best Visuals.
Best music and voice acting now form the category Best Audio.
Best gameplay and puzzle were merged into Best Gameplay.

Game lists
Only games that are eligible for specific categories are included in the drop-downs for nominations based on their database entries. This should make the nominations easier, as the lists for some categories will contain fewer games.

The rest stays the same:

Every year, the AGS community embarks on a quest to find the best games made in the last year. All games are eligible, that were added to the AGS Database in the year 2023. There is a For Your Consideration thread where authors can promote their games and players get a good overview what might be worth playing.

The awards are a two-step process: First there is a nomination phase where all community members can nominate the eligible games in several categories. The top five games of each category make it to the voting (as long as they've received at least five nominations). During voting, all members of the community can vote for their favourite games.

Update:

Quote from: Kastchey on Thu 30/11/2023 21:54:31Ok guys! First off, I would like to thank you all for all the responses, every single one. It's really uplifting to see that the community is still interested in and attached to the Awards and the ceremony.

The changes we decided to go ahead with this year are as follows:

1. The Awards:
Best Game of the Year
Best Freeware Game
Best Short Game
Best Non-Adventure Game
Best Demo
Best Audio
Best Visuals
Best Writing
Best Programming
Best Character
Best Gameplay

As you can see, all the visuals will be merged into a single award. Same with the audio awards. Gameplay and puzzles have become a single category.
Best Short, Demo, Programming and Character all have their fervent defenders, so we have decided to leave them be, at least for now. We may revisit the topic together again next year, should need be.

2. Ceremony date:

The ceremony will take place in March. The doodle for the specific date will be set up much earlier this time, around first week of January, so you can plan in advance to attend, if you wish to. The nominations phase will happen in January, and the voting in February (give or take a couple days for the team to set the next stage up).

Shortly after the ceremony date is revealed, I will start looking for presenters and streamers. Please consider volunteering, the more the merrier and it really helps a lot! :)

3. Games list:

The games will now be eligible for specific categories based on their database entries. This should make the nominations easier, as the lists of values will only include the actual eligible games.

We are happy to accept volunteers to sift through this year's database and let us know if any of the games are misclassified in the following categories: Non-Adventure, Demo, Freeware, Short.
Please PM me or cat if you think you can help.

4. Nominee assets:

As we have eliminated specific categories for visuals and audio, there will be little need to ask the creators of the nominated games for assets. We will either self-source the required assets, or accept optional contributions in the form of screenshots and avatars, should you choose to supply any.

Wow, it's November already! The next AGS Awards are around the corner. Now would be a good time to start catching up playing this year's games.  ;)

More importantly, though, I would like to discuss the future of the AGS Awards. We, the awards team (cat, @Kastchey and @Snarky), noticed a steady decline in interest. Fewer people nominate and vote, provide resources or attend the ceremony.

Nomination and voting
Good news first, @AGA has confirmed that he will take care of the voting page again. We will be able to do nominations and voting like always. However, there is a noticeable decline in the number of people who nominate and vote. While I think there will be still enough to have a significant result for 2023, it is still worrying.

Is there anything we can do to increase participation? Should we reduce the number of categories (e.g. best graphics and best animation could be merged, best gameplay could be dropped etc.)? Any other ideas?

The ceremony
The ceremony where the results are revealed has been the highlight of the AGS awards for many years. However, it comes with several problems:
* It's getting harder and harder to collect the required resources as many people either deliver them late, in weird formats or not at all. Even when they are collected, someone has to prepare them and put them in the client. We have lives beside AGS and this is taking quite some time.
* Fewer and fewer people are attending. Last year was the lowest number we ever had, as far as I remember. The huge effort of preparing the ceremony seems wasted time for such a small crowd.

Was the timing the problem? Was it just the wrong date and everything would be better with a tighter schedule and a ceremony earlier in the year? Is the ceremony not interesting anymore?

We considered various options for replacing the ceremony:
  • IRC only, as in the good old times
  • Chat only, but using Discord
  • A discord voice call with a shared powerpoint presentation
  • No ceremony at all, the result is just posted in the thread

What are your thoughts on this topic? Are you going to participate in voting or join a ceremony next year?

Apparently, AdventureX is going to happen again this year:

https://www.adventurexpo.org/

It seems there are no more tickets available. Maybe the talks will be recorded and/or streamed?
#19
We have a github repository for our demo game: https://github.com/adventuregamestudio/ags-demo-game/

Everyone, help us to make a new AGS demo game - we need writers, artists, musicians, coders, testers and project managers!

As discussed in this thread (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/adventure-related-talk-chat/crowd-sourced-of-an-open-sourced-ags-example-game-collaboration/), we want to build a new AGS demo game.

The game should demonstrate the most common features of AGS and will be targeted mostly to people new to AGS. It should showcase typical adventure game use cases and allow for easily getting them work in your own code. Ideally, the game should also be fun to play.

There has been a crowd sourced game been made before: Draculator II: Byte of the Draculator. Can we do this once again?

The first stages will be mostly discussion where to go. Everyone is invited to join in.

As Crimson Wizard has pointed out, we should start with thinking about what features should be included and what UI to use.
What is the UI that most newbies are using? What is most asked for in the beginner boards?

I'm stuck right at the beginning.

I fixed the balcony curtain and went outside, but I have no idea how to proceed. There are hardly any hotspots. The doctor said something about visiting various people but I can't even leave the house. There is only the bedroom with balcony, the potion room and the herb garden. Am I missing some exit?
