FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: Kanji Gakusei

Find Japanese characters in a colourful adventure part and then learn how to write them with the help of a gesture recognition system.

I installed BASS Midi driver and Arachno sf. In my MIDI tool I can now select it and listen to the MIDI. The sound of one of the rather obscure instruments used sounds terrible now, but ok, at least I can run it.

However, I cannot get MIDI to run for AGS games. I don't get the error message anymore, but I also don't have audio (mp3 sfx work fine).
VLC and Windows Media Player also cannot run it.
The weirdest thing so far is: Suddenly Irfan View can play it, but it sounds like the original Windows Midi, not the Arachno. Did Irfan View find the windows synth? I'm about to give up and reinstall windows...

Have you made a game in 2017 and want it to compete in the AGS Awards 2017? This is the topic where to showcase it!
Post a database link, a brief description and some pictures (thumbnails preferred, here is an excellent FYC post from last year).

Do not be shy, by posting your game you are helping the players who will take some of their time to play/nominate/vote!

Usual remarks:

  • please include a link to your games page on the AGS games database
  • if you think a game deserves mention but the author isn't around, post a FYC for them! The more worthy games we get here, the better is for everyone!
  • this thread is for FYC posts only, if you want to discuss the awards go here!

Post your games here before nominations start, which will be in about two weeks. The earlier you post, the more time people have to play your game!

How do the AGS Awards work?
(This is information mostly for new members, same procedure as every year)

Every year, the AGS community embarks on a quest to find the best games made in the last year. All games are eligible, that were added to the AGS Database in the year 2017. There is a For Your Consideration thread where authors can promote their games and players get a good overview what might be worth playing.

The awards are a two-step process: First there is a nomination phase where all community members can nominate the eligible games in several categories (it will be the same categories as last year). The top five games of each category make it to the voting. Again, all members of the community can vote on their favourite games.
The final result is then announced in a live ceremony that can be joined either with a special client or any regular irc client (details to follow).

Party like it's 1990 in this thread!

We need a new pick for January! Since we now had three rather dark games in a row, something more light-hearted would be nice ;)

Completed Game Announcements / Kanji Gakusei
Sat 30/12/2017 18:54:31

Kanji are Chinese characters that are used to write the Japanese language. There are several thousands of them. All Japanese children have to learn about 2200 kanji at school. Gakusei (pronounced "gucksay") means student.

Help our little girl to finish her homework by finding the six required Kanji.

Once you have found the characters, it is YOUR task to write them in her notebook.
An animation shows the correct writing stroke by stroke. Can you write them in the correct order?

Download here

The game uses Besh's MOUSE GESTURE SYSTEM script module that I enhanced a bit to support kanji.

Concept, graphics and coding: cat
Music: raeff
Testing: raeff, Mandle, Stupot, Cassiebsg, selmiak, Cornelius, Moeka, Aika, Kanade

When you have finished playing the game, please share your screenshot with us! It should be located in C:\Users\<your name>\Saved Games\Kanji Gakusei\screenshot.bmp

Did you see Open Toonz?

Considering that all documentation seems to be Japanese, this might not be for everyone. Granted, it's mostly Katakana and English and simple Japanese, but still, it's Japanese...

I already made a banner for the 2017 Awards. The golden cup could be a nice trophy.

Congratulations! Finally it is done - I know how hard you have been working on this, with ups and downs, but you did it! I had the honour to test act 1 and 2 and the game is really great - classic puzzles, funny dialogs and hilarious references to almost every science fiction franchise between here and Acturus-1.

Don't forget to add the game to the AGS database Done :)

Here's one I use: the Arachno SoundFont (free download: www.arachnosoft.com/main/soundfont.php)

Which software synth are you using?

If there's one thing from this thread that I can see we all agree on (although please do correct me if I'm wrong), it's that we all think it would be awesome if ScummVM at least supported AGS 2.X games and prior.

There's a bunch of potential problems if they start supporting the newest games. But there doesn't seem to be much in the way of problems if the older games are supported. Also, it would better fit in with ScummVM since it is more or less there to help support older games so they are playable on older hardware. Something which is getting increasingly more difficult with the older AGS games.

If ScummVM at least supported the older AGS games, we could finally let go of trying to keep compatibility working with those older games.

I fully agree here. There is always discussion about how tedious compatibility for older games is in the engine. Wouldn't it be much better to declare old games as legacy and let ScummVM do what it does best - run old games? Then the AGS engine could focus on new development and features, getting rid of old version support for cleaner/easier code. Migrating old projects to the newest version could be done by external scripts or tools to keep the engine/editor clean of this stuff.

To me, this seems like a win-win situation.

The only downside I see is that we don't get the platform support of ScummVM for the newest AGS games.

When an author resizes the whole game and does not bother to check if it is still working correctly, it can't be helped anyway...
#1857
Hello AGS community!

This is a friendly reminder for all AGS game developers:

Don't forget to add your games to the database until the end of this month!
Only games that were added to the database during 2017 will be eligible for the AGS Awards 2017 that will start with the beginning of next year. It would be a pity to miss out on such a great opportunity :)

Would it be doable to add at least scroll bars?
+1

For one game I made a GUI that is twice the size of the screen resolution and is moved during the game. This has two issues: I'm missing scroll bars to see every part of it and I get an annoying warning when compiling.
#1859
Thanks NicolaGs. I was hoping to get the Windows Synth to work, but I guess I'll try your solution.
