Congrats, Matt!

Great entries all around this month!

Great games all around, was hard to decide.

Luther in the Hood :
Spoiler
Good first game! The introduction with walking along the description and the chicken was innovative and hillarious. Too bad there were actually no puzzles and the game was over as soon as the story was about to take off.

Your Grace :
Spoiler
Fun game with high replay value. I thoroughly enjoyed the weird outcomes. I only couldn't figure out how to tell the spy on whom to spy.

The Dark Plague :
Spoiler
Interesting concept, I managed to escape through the window. Changing the background when returning to a room made me freak out. The game could need more polish regarding interactions with items and a few bugs.
[close]

Among Thorns :
Spoiler
Interesting setting with what feels like a whole world created just for a short game. Great animations and graphics. The inventory menu was a bit hard to use for me.
[close]

The Farm :
Spoiler
Another interesting setting and I like the idea of branching paths and decisions. The part of the graphics that was finished provided a very good atmosphere. What bothered be more than the incomplete graphics, though, was the incomplete gameplay. I'd love to have much more dialog and interactions with the people around and the puzzles where also not very engaging.

$50,000 will give you a full-time developer for a year. This is the minimum that will be needed for writing a new engine.
The last bake-sale brought what - 2000-3000$ maybe?

I agree with Radiant: We first have to decide where we want to go.

What is so special about AGS it not the engine, but the community. So whatever decision is made, it should be in the interest of the community.

I can't find the girl. I gave the sickle to the boy and got a ball in return for whatever reason.

I totally got caught up with MAGS and forgot about this thread :-[

Same here! It was a great topic, I was just too busy with MAGS to enter.

Nonetheless, great entry, Tabata!

Thanks guys, I' glad you like it!

Raeff recorded the background noise of a nearby pub while we were waiting for our dinner. He then edited it to make it loop nicely and avoid having words or phrases recognizable.

I agree with Myinah that it was great to meet in IRC and talk about our projects and progress. The little teasers you showed where a great motivation and made me look forward to all the games and work harder on our own game. Too bad team Dropped Monocle didn't make it. I'm looking forward to the extended version!
Also thanks for the occasional AGS help.

I started playing the games yesterday and it was great already.

Oh du lieber Augustin

The city is plagued by Black Death. Can you, Augustin the bagpiper, give the people some comfort in these hard times?

"Oh du lieber Augustin" ("Oh you dear Augustin") is a popular Viennese folk song that is said to originate from the Great Plague in 1679. This game tells (very loosely) the story of its creation.

Creamy: Gamedesign, art and animation
cat: Gamedesign, writing and coding
raeff: Music and testing
Eric Matyas: Free music track "Hazy Disorientation"

Made for MAGS January 2016

Update 28.02.2016: The game now features a French translation by Creamy and a German translation by cat. Choose the desired language in the winsetup.exe

Update 08.03.2016: The game was featured in Adventure Gamer's Following Freeware!

I think this discussion is too interesting to restrict it to PM. Maybe a moderator can split it of into a separate thread?

Anyway, I'll go from this quote, because this best describes my issues with the topic.

Also, since the Jam is about character-design (to me), you have to quickly and easily recognize character's personality (otherwise you're not a designing a character).

Being attractive is not a part of personality. It describes a visual feature (or rather the lack of: I've seen a report about a study where they were showing portraits of men and women and the task was, to rate attractiveness. It turned out that attractiveness is not the result of certain facial features, but merely the lacking of anything deviating from the norm. The blandest face was rated most attractive). So from a point of character design, you could also have said the character has to be a female villain with red hair, it would not have made any difference.

Personality always has to do with feelings, experiences and motivations. You could have said the villain should be vain or superficial. Or maybe that the villain puts a lot of effort into hiding that she is actually the antagonist. I could work with that.

I think I start to understand what you tried to achieve with this topic, but I think you set it up the wrong way. What you want is non-stereotypical villains. But this has nothing to do with attractiveness. I'm not very proficient with Disney characters, but from your last post at least to me Maleficent is much more attractive than the green geisha. I think I would have perceived this whole sprite jam much differently had you called it "non-stereotypical female villain" and then given the examples you did above.

So I was certainly not offended by the topic, I just thought it was uninspired and uninspiring. I should have known from your previous posts on the forum that you put lot of effort in this jam, but sadly it didn't shine through. So sorry from me for imputing uninspiredness.
I'd love to enter a sprite jam (or actually character design jam) where you get a description of a character's personality (I own and love Bancroft's books) and then you have to design from that, similar to last background workshop. But being attractive is just not a character trait, it's a visual feature.

Hi Eric!

We used "Hazy Disorientation" in our game Oh du lieber Augustin.
I gave you credit in the in-game credits and an additional credits file shipped with the game.

Thanks, cat

No matter how dark the theme, I still manage to include some light-hearted elements in a game :)

I hope that clarifies things. :)

Yes it does! Thanks Eric! And I will let you know if I use any of your music.

Hi Eric!

Thanks for providing such great music!

The license is a bit complicated for me to understand. If I use one of your tracks in a game - is it enough to credit you in the end credits and add a link to your homepage? Or do I have to do anything else?

Another audio issue, this time with an ogg sound effect.

I wanted to play a sound effect, but it was not audible. The effect was very short, about 340 milliseconds. Playing another ogg sound instead worked. When I made the original sound longer (i.e. by adding silence at the end until it was about 630 milliseconds), it was suddenly audible. Is there a minimum length for sound effects?

Opening the audio clip in AGS and using the play button there worked in both cases, the long and the short version.

In winter, when sun rises, depending on the weather conditions it might be bright orange and will draw a bright orange rectangle on the opposite wall in my bedroom just for a few minutes. Isn't this an awesome thing to wake up with?
In summer, the position of the sun is different (and I'm never awake during the much earlier sunrise) so this is a thing I can only enjoy now.
#2438
We're still in, making good progress and should finish in time!

Excellent post, Scavenger! Just exactly my thoughts.

Thanks, monkey0506. Once I'm done with MAGS I might create a demo project and file a tracker ticket.
