Thank you for your comments! I will try to make a background that is something inbetween the two versions as recommended.

Critics' Lounge / Which BG Style?
Sun 04/11/2007 16:42:22
I'm currently doing some backgrounds for a game. However, I'm not sure about the style to use.
I did the same scenery with two different styles (don't care about the pink background, this is only temporary)

Which one do you think is better? The game should have a funny/cute mood with some weird characters.

I thought your peaceful boy could need an evil twin:

Ok, competition is over.

Brad Newsom: Looks very good, I really like the rolling edges. Simple but effective.
SilverTrumpet: Great idea, really made me laugh. The picture itself could need some polishing.
Rayberg: Also great idea, however you could have spent more times in details (e.g. use a more appropriate font etc.)
Gilbot V7000a: I don't know what it is too and I don't know how the shape has inspired you to do IT but it is fun  ;)
TheJBurger: Great picture and astonishing use of color!
space boy: Nice idea. Probably this is the treasure the other maps lead to?

Third place: Gilbot! This -what ever it is- is creative and well done.
Second place: TheJBurger! It looks really like an old treasure map.

And the first place goes to...

Brad Newsom
very effective style, good placement of shadows and I can really think of this sprite in an adventure game.

Thank you all for your participation, Brad its your turn for a new competition.

I like the first and the second one according to technique and coloring, two totally different styles that are hard to compare. I think your main problem is composition. There is just this one desk in a huge room. You should either add some more furniture or move the desk and change perspective.

Great entries everyone!

For those who didn't submit an entry yet: just one day left!
#4508
I am working on an entry too, I hope I will be able to finish it until the deadline.

You've found this old map in a box in the attic. Does it lead to a treasure? Will it show you the right way? Or is it something totally different?

You may change the color of the outline but not the outline itself. You may also rotate the image.
Max. colors 64 + transparency

Hey wow, my first win in an AGS competition! I'll start a new competition soon.
#4511
Well, I did like your other one better. Now the colors are somewhat dull and do not fit the bright blue sky outside.
If you want to keep it that way you should atleast make some light beam that is coming from the window to the bed.

Great topic! Here is my entry:

Use some shadings for the trees like you did for the mountains and some texture for the grass.

I think the foto and the character fit very well. The hardest part will be to make the character fit ALL backgrounds in your game.

Wow, looks great, looking forward to this!

Ladies and Gentlemen, please get your red-green glasses and watch this 3D panda! (the green glass has to be in front of the right eye)

Oh, I forgot to mention, it is based on this http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:Giant_Panda_2004-03-2.jpg picuture. So if it is not allowed to use paintovers in this competition its ok for me.

The room looks quite nice and functional. However, i would rather think of finding it in a 60's or 70's James Bond story or something like that. You have to - as KhrisMUC already said - tile the windows. Additionally I'm not sure about that kind of bank below the windows. I think it also doesn't fit into the 19th century.
#4518
Thank you KhrisMUC, I'll try that one. It looks a bit crooked but less distorted as with only one vanishing point. I think this will fit the style of my game very well.

Hi!

I want to include a scrolling room in my game showing a town.

I started to make a scatch but now I run into perspective problems:

I think the lines are correct, however if you just look at the right side of the picture the boxes in front of the right house look weird because the vanishing point is outside the picture.

Any ideas, how I can handle this?
