I don't care about the images anyway, I'm now using Opera and I browse the forums normally without loading any images (unless I really need to see them), even in the C&C forum.

Yeah, I figured you for a non-loading-images kind of guy. Just like me.
I dig how opera has a load/don't load/cached images button right on the gui. Actually I must have spent hours customizing the interface. Ah, good times...

Well, probably sending out CDs is your best bet, if you're willing to go through the trouble. Unless you know someone who can provide you that much host space/ bandwidth.
Also, putting it on kazaa wouldn't work very well because users connect to many different nodes. So you can't reliably find a specific file unless many, many users have it. I think. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, you project sounds cool.. I'm looking forward to seeing it if not hearing it.

Advanced Technical Forum / square root & math
Fri 15/08/2003 09:12:22
So anyway, I'm trying to calculate the distance between 2 points on the screen, to see if a point is within a certain radius of another point... and...

Well, I was never really a math person. The best idea I could come up with is using the pythagorean theorem... But is there a square root operation in AGS? If not, how can I make one? Can I somehow use the functions in Erica's math plugin? (Sorry, like I said, my math is very limited.) Or is there a better way to do this? I'm guessing there is.

OK, thanks. (my first tech question in years)

Tobias: Yes, you should be able to, but always keep a backup of your game folder along with the old version of ags, just in case something gets broken.

By the way, I'm also a strong advocate of zip instead of installer. Anyway, I feel bad complaining; it's just a pet peeve

Actually, you can do this automatically...
Just make the button's text: (INV) or (INVNS). Then the active inv item will be drawn on top of the button graphic.

You know I had an idea for a game where the player character was dressed in a full body, boba fett type armor. Then at the end of the game, the character takes the helmet off, and reveals what he/she looks like. But who you turn out to be was affected by how you played the game. So it could be revealed that you are a man or woman, or even a monster, like the twilight zone episode with the masks. Or SKELETONS!!!

There was a time when all Jackie Chan wore was denim... jeans, jacket, shirt, everything, all the time. Denim.

Cornjob, you wouldn't agree that sitting thru a feature length film of someone asking for script ideas on the AGS forum would be torture?

Yeah, originally, I was going to give the same reply I give to people who come here and say "Give me a story for my game."  But I didn't want to discourage LGM! Not that there's anything wrong with asking for some ideas, but the overall vision has to come from the director/game-maker.

No external mic is kind of a problem, but here's some ideas of how to shoot with the camera mic.

Obviously, make sure whoever is talking is very close to the camera, and talks really loud. Watch out for noise in the environment, especially wind.

If you want to do a shot where the camera is far away from the actor but dialogue is heard, just make sure you can't see their mouth too well, and dub in the audio seperately. You can get audio fills with the camera, just do it in a room with good aucoustic properties or, if you can't find one, the inside of a car works.

If your camera has a headphone jack, you should listen to the audio while you're filming, even with the camera mic, because sometimes weird things can happen... like you might hear a high-pitched buzz or hum due to electrical fields. It's rare though with the camera mic. With wireless mics, it happens all the time.

Anyway, good luck. I think it's up to you to come up with a story you want to film.

You know what- you'll never make a feature this way, and if you did- it would be torture to sit thru.

I don't know if I agree with that. I just finished making a feature-length movie on video, with just my friends as actors and almost no budget. In fact, that's why I haven't been around at all for the last few weeks... I've been editing. Now maybe some people would consider my movie torture to watch.. personally, I think it turned out really cool. Anyway, we're submitting it to some film festivals... hopefully we'll find some that aren't too pretentious to take a no-budget action adventure special effects extravaganza. (By the way, the new version of the trailer is up.)

Now LGM, I don't know if you have a lot of experience making movies or not. If you haven't done a lot, then certainly you should start with shorts. I can tell you that a 80-minute movie is like ten times harder to make than a 10-minute short.

By the way, I don't agree that the quality of your equipment should dictate the content of your movie. You shouldn't have to give it a "documentary-look" like Blair Witch just to excuse the fact that you're using a cheap camcorder. I say, film whatever kind of story you want. It's a big mistake to handicap your creativity and potential because you're ashamed of your equipment.

Anyway, that's just the advice of someone who comes from an underground/guerilla filmmaking background.

Anybody seen 28 Days Later? Those soldiers reminded me of one of M0DS's movies... Not that I've actually seen them, but I've seen pictures.

Yeah, I did try this a small one-screen grid. Using Rawdrawing to put down each tile shouldn't be slow. Of the Raw functions, I think RawRestoreScreen is the only slow one. Just dropping down sprites should be fast. Now making certain tiles block the player's movement, that's more of a challenge.

By the way, I was also thinking about Harvest moon a while ago, even before Mostly's Veggie Patch. Harvest Moon is almost like a combination of simulation and adventure already...

QuoteIt would not be fair to compare Fatman to a high-budget commercial game as it is the work of one person, but, on the other hand, I have to remain objective. For that reason, I am using Dark Fall as the benchmark for reviewing Fatman's graphics as it also was an Independently Developed game.

Is it just me, or does that line totally not make sense?

Anyway, I finished the game a few days ago. Overall, very nice. A nice assortment of puzzles... My favorite part of the game however, has to be Goldmund's narration. My only criticism is that I wish Toxicman and Fatman met earlier in the game, and more of the game was focused on actively fighting against him. Something to keep in mind for the sequel, I guess?

Wow, you're like a genius or something! I mean, the timing and music add that missing element that I think is a great improvement over the original. Because you don't have to think about pressing the "next day" button. I haven't been able to get past chapter one, but the idea of having cutscenes is also genius. Also, Squinky's art is very nice, very appealing.

Interesting. I got the score of 30549. I have no clue what the hell I'm doing. Somehow I made a pea creeper. Is that good? And what does it mean when the guy says "JUJU!" Anyway, it seems to be a fascinating game.

I got my copy a few days ago. Very cool. I love the "director's commentary" thing. Anyway, I'll post more after I've got a chance to play it more.

Hey man, I just ordered a copy. I'm looking forward to it!

Oh yeah, I forgot about walking. You could use the unhandled_event function to run a ProcessClick(mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_WALK) when the player clicks in use mode on either a) nothing or b) a hotspot with no use interaction. You'll have to look in the manual to figure out how to use unhandled_event.
As for changing the cursor to an arrow, just change the cursor graphic. It no longer matters what cursor mode you're in, so you can use any one. And yes, definitely read the manual. Good luck.
