Anyway, here's a great song: Highwayman
Wasn't sure I'd like it at first, but it is a nice track.

This is what I was listening to before I clicked that link:

That freedom fighter has some style!

I've been looking at some memes lately.

I may have gotten something confused.

Oh, let me just add that it annoys me more, people calling adventure games to games that are not.
Lara Croft is not an adventure game it's an action-adventure... And if it's an interactive novel, don't call it an adventure game, if there are only puzzles and no story don't call it an adventure game.

Just call it what it is and we're all be happier to be able to find exactly the game we're looking for. Instead of having to read through reviews or watch YT videos to figure out what type of game it really is.  ;)
This is an interesting point.

I agree with Cassie in that I think that it's helpful when game creators label their games by genre here, at least when the genre is something other than an adventure game.

So many kinds of games can be made with AGS.  There are great Platformers, Tile-based Strategy games, Adventure RPGs, and so much more that this engine can do in capable hands.  Visual Novels (to generalize the games discussed in this thread) are just another type of game that can be made with AGS.

As far as my opinions on Visual Novels in general, I have no issue with them.  I haven't played many, but I have played several great games that incorporate elements of Visual Novel gameplay.  I like gameplay that feels appropriate to the narrative.  If the story doesn't need any more interaction than moving from place to place, then there is no reason to add any additional gameplay to complete it.  However, if the story has strong elements of deduction or fighting for example, then you may want to include puzzles or combat.  Action sequences can also be done through cutscenes or other means, so not all fighting in a story necessarily calls for a combat engine to be constructed, and different sections of a story can be told through different types of gameplay.  It all comes down to the story that is being told and if I feel that the gameplay works with it (or against it).

Jack just embedding the video from your comment. Yeah I love this track too! Jarvis Cocker's lyrics are also always very clever:
This is a great track.

What I'm currently listening to:

I got a post deleted there for not having the correct opinion on something. Didn't swear, didn't attack any posters. The link I posted which had a lot of info on gamergate was quite unbiased. This is the problem. The opinion was not on the extreme left.

Snarky, you're a clown. Whoever put you in charge of anything screwed up bigtime.
This grinds my gears.

I was introduced to this some while back:

I really like this one.  Great song, great video.

Yeah, I thought that one in particular was interesting considering recent storylines.

Sounds awesome!  The What If... series had a lot of great stories.  Well, it definitely had a lot of stories...

Along the same lines, I wonder if they will ever have a similar series for Star Wars.

Star Wars Inifinities and Visionairies were both fun reads, and would easily be more enjoyable to me than Episode 8.  But that's a whole other discussion, I suppose.

General Discussion / Re: MCU Phase 4

I'm both interested and disinterested.  I'm experiencing a little bit of superhero fatigue, but the fan in me still wants to see a few of these.

Some look like they would just be good action or science fiction.

My favorite MCU character series are getting additional installments, so that's nice.  Interested in Thor and Guardians.  Also happy to see more Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel.

Bringing the X-Men into the fold could be a great thing, but I lost interest fairly early on with the previous series of films.  Hoping Marvel will do it better.

I'm more anxious about the Fantastic 4, though.  I'm a big Silver Surfer fan and I didn't like what Fox did with that character (or the Fantastic 4 for that matter).  I'm hoping that they eventually do a good representation of him, but now that the Infinity War is over, frankly, I'm a bit less interested.

I also heard mention of a What If... series, which could have some great episodes.  My favorite What If... comic was this one:

Still, I'm not interested in paying for a new online streaming service.  So, even if it becomes an episode, I may never see it.

Full marks for can creativity. Please tell me it didn't actually taste like marshmallow?
No, it tasted nothing like marshmallow. If anything, that would've been an improvement.
I would love to describe the taste, but alas, I'm terrible when it comes to describing the taste of alcohol, since they all taste the same to me.
Thankfully my sister also had a sip before I binned it, and she does like alcohol, her description of it is: "F***ing terrible! It was bitter and strong, and had a 'gone off' taste. And it tasted like it was burnt or something."
That's how I would describe a porter, myself.

I can safely say that I still detest the taste of alcohol.
I binned it after one sip.  (laugh)
The label is cool, but I'm not a big fan of porters.

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that Quest for Glory: So You Want to Be a Hero (1989) was my most formative game experience, and that is still true.  It set me on a path away from console gaming into becoming much more interested in the PC (for gaming, and in general).  It was instrumental in sparking my desire to develop games of my own, which I began to do at a relatively young age using QBASIC (1991).

The question, however, asks about influence.  That's a more nuanced question.  I have many influences and can't list just one (although I do list only one of each game series).  So here's a sampling of the list (in chronological order):

Choplifter (1982)
Lode Runner (1983)
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? (1985)
Fun House (1989)
Prince of Persia (1989)
Quest for Glory II: Trial By Fire (1990)
Scorched Earth (1991)
SkiFree (1991)
Civilization (1991)
Another World (1992)
King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow (1992)
Sim City 2000 (1993)
Leisure Suit Larry 6: Shape Up or Slip Out! (1993)
Riven (1997)
Star Wars: Galaxies (2003)
Zoo Tycoon 2 (2004)

(Some of these games I did not play until much later than their release dates.)

A good mix of different game genres.  My early favorites were all from Brøderbund, which essentially introduced me to video gaming in general.  1989 - 1993 were the years that really had a lasting impact, even more so with the Gameboy coming out in 1989, and the SNES in 1991.

The question asks specifically about computer games.  If I added in console, handheld, and arcade games, the list would expand greatly (mostly into platforming, action adventure, fighting, sports, and racing games).  For example, my experiences with Maniac Mansion were on the NES.

It's been fun reading about how others were inspired by games, a lot of them the same or similar to the ones I have listed.  It's great to be part of a community based around common experiences.

Been growing tired of the Orpheus Transmigration I talked about earlier.

Lately, I've been drinking Wicked Weed's Pernicious IPA.  Yum.

Not as strong, but much tastier, and it has a gorgeous label style:

I imagine the works of Robert Heinlein would adapt well, or serve as good inspiration for adventure games.  I'm thinking mostly of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and The Cat Who Walks Through Walls.

That's such a peaceful setting.  Well done!

That was a great game.

For me, the most formative game experience would be Hero's Quest / Quest for Glory.
