The Rumpus Room / Re: Icey games' thread

I can understand why some get frustrated with reading Icey's posts.  The typos and grammar can be difficult to decipher, and he makes many extraordinary claims.  I find them entertaining.  A little playful jabbing, like my earlier post, is not intended to inflict any harm.  Unfortunately, some here get annoyed by his posts and express this quite harshly.  Maybe they're sick of dealing with Icey, I don't know, I'm (relatively) new here.  But in my opinion, if you want to see trolling, these are the trolls.

Some people on this forum seem to be somewhat negative and condescending.  Maybe it's cynicism.  Maybe they just don't like something about the posts they respond to.  I'm not sure, but it sometimes comes across as rude.  It's not just in this thread, these same people have the same attitude across the whole forum.  At times, sure, they can be helpful, and they make insightful posts.  I can tell they're not bad people on the whole, but for some reason they are often compelled towards negativity.

I'm not trying to be a white knight, but this seemed as good a place as any to comment on this trend.

Icey, you seem to have a lot of ideas, I encourage you to take the real advice here and turn them into games.  I'm sure you're already working on that.  I like your art style, even if it is extremely reminiscent of Square's art style.  The company is quite obviously your biggest influence.  You do have artistic talent, though, and I'd like to see you make a real, fully functional game.  It would go a long way to proving these haters wrong.

Congratulations, RaGG!  I loved your track, and knew the competition would be difficult from the get go.

Nice job.  I'm looking forward to the next contest.

You guy cant lie you've.
I was thinking the same thing.

Good luck with Mythical Gambit, Icey.  It would honestly be very cool to see you get your game on the Wii U.

Thanks!

My original idea was to do some 'Boss Fight' type music, but I couldn't quite get it down the way I wanted.

Looking forward to the results.  You've got your work cut out for you with this one, Pinback.

It certainly does.

Best of luck to you guys!

It really does look interesting, and full of lots of fun humor.

I am looking forward to playing this one when it's finished.

Looks good! The igg campaign - there's no info on what the 5000 is for (unless my eyes deceive me?). Can you explain a bit where that money is going as it's requested this late in the development? A paragraph explaining the moneys on the igg may help you. I only see that half of it is for charity. Thanks!
I was actually coming here to ask the same thing.  I am a bit curious as to the distribution of funds.

Either way, I wish you luck in the campaign.  The game looks great, and the cause is just.

I managed to get a track done.  I'm pretty happy with the results.  I had to loop it 6 times to get over the 5 minute mark, as the loop itself is just under a minute.

Night Tune

Everyone's done a really good job this time, great work all around.  There's not a track I don't like.  :)

Fair enough, it was by design.

The graphics, music, gameplay, and programming were all great.  Much of it was pretty funny, too.

Both are really good.

I like jwalt's idea, but my vote will go to Miez for execution.  Well done to both of you!

This is looking really nice.  I'm definitely intrigued.

For some reason, I am reminded of the movie Clerks.

I say go for it.  It looks like a nice, simple setting.

I'd recommend coming up with a good reason we can't go beyond the edges of the block.  What would be to the right of the Academie, or the left of the Galleria?  I'd also try to fix up the text and / or font used on the signs, it is a bit difficult to read.

Congratulations, guys.  You managed to pull it off at the last minute.

Kudos!  Can't wait to see how the game turns out.  I wasn't able to back it, but I will certainly be playing it when all is said and done.

This was an entertaining game, but I actually did poorly at it.  I suppose I played the game in the wrong frame of mind.

I did well with the shooting mini-game, though.  That was entertaining.  And I'll admit, like most people I enjoyed the slap.

My only complaint is the shoe blocking the text.  I'm guessing it says Pebbles?

It sure seems to be a fun time, and what a good looking group!

Thanks for the pictures, and I hope sometime to see an event close enough to me that I can attend.

General Discussion / Re: Tropes vs Women
Mon 19/08/2013 07:43:41
I believe that what he's getting at is this:

Anita's agenda is to see more games with positive female protagonists, and possibly also to see less games that victimize women.  To pursue this agenda, she has made this series of videos to illustrate how women are negatively portrayed in video games.  His argument is that she has perhaps stretched these claims as far as she can in the pursuit of these goals, and that this has somewhat misrepresented the severity of the situation.

That's not to say that she doesn't have points, but that she's taking these points to the extreme in hopes of achieving her goals.

I'm not sure I would completely disagree, because while I support most of her arguments, I do think that sometimes she seems to be finding problems where the issue may be somewhat negligible.  She also seems dismissive of (or unwilling to discuss) any games that treat the trope fairly without providing a strong female player character, which is her agenda.

This time yesterday I thought you had no chance.  Now I'm starting to think it can be done :-)
Same.  I hope you guys manage to get the last few hundred dollars!

Great post, Nefasto, and thanks for the link to the TV Tropes page.

It seems that there are many ways in which this trope can actually work, and some in which I feel its use is completely justified, but I think you'll find that Sarkeesian would only like to see the inverted trope.  This makes sense, since her real goal is to see more strong female characters in the main protagonist role of video games.
