I would either use a custom text window GUI or a textual overlay.
With DisplayAt and DisplayAtY you can change the white window background to be something else but there will be a background of one sort.

Look at the NPC's talking view and animate it in the IDE. do you see the flash of the normal view then?

Is there any action you can do that will make the object visible set to false or change the object graphic?
When you did the earlier save, have you changed the program since? If you change the program then all prior save games become invalid
