General Discussion / Re: One Free Kill
Wed 21/11/2012 20:19:52
Technically, everyone does have one free kill, free from legal ramifications, if you know what I mean...

Hell, if you can even finish your first game, that's no small accomplishment there.

You'd love the Crackwell games. Not to mention Astro Galaxy Mega Quest.

My system of ethics has changed greatly in the last few years, morphing from what was a fairly standard, simplified form of virtue ethics that boiled down to "don't be a dick and be excellent to each other" into something, well, completely indefensible. In short, I completely stopped caring, to the point where my philosophy now takes the form of misanthropic nihilism. I suppose it stems from my deep, seething hatred of every human being, but when faced with an ethical dilemma, my first inclination is just to kill everyone involved. The thing is, I know this is wrong and I don't hope that anyone would share such a twisted view of the world, because they would clearly be terrible person. Which I am. So what I am working on now is attempting to remove these feelings somehow and root myself in a reasonable and not-sociopathic moral theory.

I don't know what it is about AGS that attracts socially retarded thirteen-year-olds incapable of expressing themselves coherently, but I originally thought this was spamvertising and considered reporting it. Nope, just turns out it's another kid who has not yet discovered proper punctuation.

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." If the AGS community has taught me anything, it's the truth of this razor. The dude could be innocent but simply not intellectually or emotionally capable of defending himself without coming off as a ponce, and I hardly believe that his "behavior" has implicated him beyond a shadow of a doubt, innocent until proven guilty and all that rubbish. Whatever the case, he needs to shut up about the orphanages and all the emotional manipulation with the "teacher" bullshit, it's just a blatant persecution complex.

And Christ, I think we all (myself included) need to take a step back and recall that this is just a forum on the Internet where people make retro point-and-click adventures for fun. Chill the fuck out.

Ooh, forum drama. First, the on-topic stuff so Dualnames doesn't yell at me: mods responded appropriately, sock-puppeting isn't harmless, but isn't as egregious as some claim, Kimbra should probably stop digging their way out of a hole and take a Xanax, and Prometheus was a fucking terrible film.

Variables are perfect for this task! Global ones especially so. Make two global variables of type int. Call them something like temp_x and temp_y. Before you change rooms, set temp_x = player.X and temp_y = player.Y and when you call the ChangeRoom function to go back to the original room, pass the temp variables as additional parameters. There's other ways of doing this, but that's the simplest and most useful way. Check out the manual if you have any trouble.

Quote from: Dualnames on Thu 06/09/2012 05:33:21So if you've got nothing serious to contribute, don't make a joke out of this.

Ironic for a post that contributes nothing to the discussion at hand. Wait, now I have to contribute, lest I appear a hypocrite!

Um... sockpuppet accounts are... bad?

In my opinion, people should NOT openly speculate usernames in public. Thanks. :)
IT WAS DUALNAMES DUALNAMES DID IT IN THE KITCHEN WITH THE CANDLESTICK

I will admit that I at one point considered releasing one of my particularly awful "games" (no points for guessing which) under an alias. Considering the quality of the finished product... yeesh.

Hey, congratulations on finally getting this one out! I'm proud to have worked on it and more than glad to help out.

I do wish to apologize to Grim if it appeared as though I implied you were somehow less intelligent than dualnames, as this is most certainly not the case.

Look, a guy just fucking died, okay? The least you could do is abstain from your utterly uninformed dismissal of his legacy. It's not malicious, it's not even stupid, it's simply ignorant in the purest sense of the word, as you freely admit your beliefs were completely devoid of research or evidence but rather the small-minded disrespect of a great man, not to mention the scientists and engineers who put humans on the goddamn Moon.

Also, props to NASA Langley, kconan.

Ignorant and disrespectful, Grim.

As an alternative to PayPal, I've used Amazon Payments. Dunno how easy it is to integrate, though.

I think you're doing it backwards. Instead of opening without any press and running it for far too long, hoping press will drum up later, the optimal strategy is to generate anticipation and have a short window of availability to increase perceived demand. Someone with only moderate interest will see the site and say "oh that looks neat, I might buy that later" and forget it quickly, while a limited sale time improves the chances of impulse buys. Too late now, though.

Eddie Izzard is my all-time favorite stand up comedian and Family Guy is my all-time least favorite TV show. And even devoid of context, those Frankie Boyle jokes seemed utterly unfunny.
