Advanced Technical Forum / Object Trails

I want to put an effect in my game where an object moves across the screen and leaves trails in its wake, similar to the "Mouse Trails" feature for mouse cursors in Windows.  As the object goes by, it leaves a ghost-like trail behind it.  Anyone have a suggestion on how to do this?

Great background!  I think you achieved your goal to make it in the MI style.  The shadows in the moon make it look like it's concave, instead of convex (i.e., it appears to bulge inward instead of outward).  If you could reverse this, and maybe add crater shadows, I think it would look much better.

The woman can't see the sheep because they're so far away....

Spoiler
Use the broom on the sheep to move them closer to the woman.  She'll put the sandwich down.

Spoiler
Use the sandwich book on the sandwich to get it

try looking on the ground by the big red brick wall.

Really great!  I can't wait to play this one.  The first Apprentice was great, and this one looks like it's aiming to be just as good if not better.  Wow, three times the size...  Don't make us wait too long!  :-\

Are you using the MoveCharacterBlocking function?  Or do you have the "Wait for move to finish" check box marked? This could explain why the character will not stop moving once it starts. You should use MoveCharacter or uncheck the "Wait for move to finish" box.

I got that message too.  Had to right-click the link, then Open in New Window.  Then it worked

Hmm, good discussion.  I think that people who offer illegal copies of 10+ year old games on the internet are in reality just as likely to be prosecuted by the publisher as anyone who, say, re-releases an already-existing game (like Tierra/AGDI for instance).   Actually, I would think that a re-release or an unofficial "sequel" of an existing game would be more likely to be shut down than an illegal downloadable copy of the original game, since a sequel really could hinder potential profits of a legitimate game by the publisher in the future.

Take Leisure Suit Larry 8 for example.  If Sierra actually does end up putting out this game, then they would certainly want to shut down any kind of fan-made sequel that people have or are in the process of making.

But I think that, with this exception aside, a website that offers free copies of old, no longer supported games can do no more harm than re-kindling the interest in these old games, and possibly in the publisher who put it out originally.  As we've seen with AGDI, big companies like Sierra have no interest in shutting these guys down, probably since it keeps part of their own gaming market alive.

Well George and I have just started work on another game, but it's not Sammy's Quest 2.  It's on the list right after this one!

Either that, or get the mouse x and y coords when the user clicks on the player character.  You could have some function that translates that x,y pair into a character region, depending on where the character is (relative to the screen) at the time.  Might get kind of hard to implement if you have a LOT of items that you want to be interchangeable throughout the game...

Ok, here's how to do the secret puzzles: (it's already been solved, so I will post it here just for people's curiosity)

Secret puzzle #1:
Spoiler
You need the following items: rock, cards, gun, scarf, newspaper, broom, flute, coal, coin, twig, bag, feather, and gold nugget.  Once you have all those items, use the deck of cards on Sammy.  Something "magical" should happen. and you will produce....  well.... nothing....  Take the Nothing to the brick wall and use it on the brick wall.  The logic here is, if there was "nothing" there instead of a wall, Sammy could pass through it.  Go through the wall and voila!  Secret room! BTW, George and Dave are the two authors.

Secret puzzle #2:
Spoiler
Once you've gone to the secret room in the first secret puzzle, you'll get a secret number (762198).  Take this number to the jukebox, and enter it as the number of the song to play.  You'll hear new music and you've solved the second secret puzzle!

Great job.  Very professional-looking.

I agree that it would be nice to be able to click on each game to download it...  Not sure how this would work for games with mirror sites...

Maybe you should look closer in the dungeon.  Is there something you missed?  Did you pick up any items?  It's ok if you give the poisoned rat to the dragon.  You can still beat the game.

Great idea, iqu.  I would definitely play a Red Dwarf game.  And you're pics are a good start!

and densming - was that sarcasm?

uhh.... yeah.

But I think it really would be funny.  I mean, hey, Microsoft does it with Windows, and I laugh every time IT stops working on me.

no, the game has an actual ending.  Let's see, there's a broken sword in the Party Hall that needs fixing.  Have you done that? And returned it back to the Party Hall?  After you do that, the blacksmith has a job for you to do :)

You can still complete the game even if you give the premade chains to the ghost.

Spoiler
Just use the hammer on the ghost's box.  You'll get the key that way.

hehe...  glad you like the game.

I like to stay in the Party Hall for hours while that music's playing  ;D

earlwood--That's not a bug, it was designed to always enter the main hall from the right side, no matter which way you go up.  Both right and left take you to the party hall anyway...

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go back to listening to my favorite music! Woo-hoo.

Ok, getting the painting in the dining room seems to be the current topic :)

Here's how to get it done:
Spoiler
First, you make paint.  Use the oil on the bowl, then use the flour (from the market) on the bowl of oil.  Next, use the flowers that you got at the well on the bowl.  This makes paint.  You'll need a palette to put the paint on before you can use it.  Hmm, that tray from the Party Hall looks like a palette (it's even got a thumb hole).  Now to get up to the canvas in the dining room.  Well, Sammy doesn't want to get the floor messed up, so put the tarp down on the dining room floor (get the tarp from the attic).  Then use the ladder on the tarp and climb up to the canvas.  If you have the paintbrush you can use it on the canvas to paint the picture!  Whew!
