When I try to pick up the paper from the desk near the safe, he says I better not take that. How do I get it?

I never saw any sacrifice or a deak monk. I still haven't figured out how to get into the theatre because when try its locked. I know the keys to open it are probably under the grate and I see them but when I try to get them he says there is no reason. I can't pick up owl, broom or pot, but I have been by to talk to the barkeep about everything. I'm stuck!
