Ultima is RPG, though.

I was just thinking and it seems to me that a big difference between Graphic Adventures and other game genres (action, action-adventure, rpgs, some god games, and strategy games)  is that Adventure Games don't really have nameless NPCs (Non-Player Characters) you can kill for no meaningful reason other than to defend yourself or make the game easier.

I'm thinking, however, are there any non-adventure games out there that do not have the option for the player to kill random npcs? Can it be possible to include nameless characters with a good purpose? I guess TLo Zelda kind of did it, but the game is more of a Console action/adventure game. And the survival horror did it too, but they too are Console adventure games.

Discuss. :P

In detail....

Yeah, it kind of looks like a hoax, but it's still a pretty good photoshop. The suit anakin is wearing, though, does not match the suit he's wearing on Ep III, nor the suit worn by the old guy who originally played Anakin. So, it might be true after all.   :'(

I read the article from the first post... LOL.

Here's a summary of the Kurosawa movie "The Hidden Fortress", as told by blockbuster's website:
"Running from the enemy after a disastrous defeat, the two soldiers fall in with general Toshiro Mifune, who is in search of a huge cache of gold. Mifune is also desirous of freeing princess-in-exile Misa Uehara from the clutches of the evil victorious army. Several large and small battles ensue before Mifune can realize his goal. If the plot of Hidden Fortress sounds vaguely familiar to you, try this exercise: substitute two robots for Chiaki and Fujiwara, Mark Hamill for Mifune, and Carrie Fisher for Uehara."

I'll prefer a good ripped off movie 1000 times more than a bad original movie. If you don't care, just try to watc a Lifetime original movie and then let's see who's right :P

Well, time to rip off monkey island for my next game... lol, just kidding ;D

Two of those links have beeen removed, though....

Also, why is LGM naked in his avatar?  :o

I don't think you understand that crazy Grundislav humor. :P

Primarily  for adventures, the thing I found most fun is the rich storyline and relationship among characters, at least in the LucasArts school.

I think the fun in RPGs is really building up your character(s) to your own liking... it's specially fun in MMORPGs because you can brag with your other RPG nerd buddies  :P

For those going to/at E3,

Where is Psychonauts? I thought Remixor tested the game so that it would be showcased at E3, but I've found 0 news. The mojo/ad/idlethumbs people have covered nothing either...

Also... analogy of the day:
Esseb is to Pumaman as Yufter is to Tim Schafer.... they're both stalkers!  ;D

Where exactly can you have speech capabilites? I know you can have it on:
Dialog Options (I guess it assumes it's the player character)
Dialog Scripts
Global/Room Scripts (with DisplaySpeech)

What about:
Global messages?
Room messages?
Display?
how does ags know who's saying the line then?

Another build is up, this time the problems are  fixed.

Here's a new problem, though. Before you copy the new plugin, make sure you unselect it from your game, and then once you copy the new file, open your game and re-select the plugin. Otherwise,  it might not work properly. I'm not sure if this is an AGS Editor fault, or my own fault. I'm trying to figure out what's going on...

Thanks to petteri for his assistance on testing these problems  ;D

looks like the final cut-scene to me....

Oh, I know why... you can't get the time from WAVE file neither with DirectX... Hmm... apparently it's  just MP3s... that's kind of crappy. I'll fix it and reupload it.

Yes, you need to go to windows update and get the .NET Framework... it's not too dificult to install, if your IE is working fine. I mentioned it in the readme file included in the zip but I should have mentioned here, too, I guess.

I always wondered how people like Grundislav managed with several voice and sound and music files in their game folder (for like Carver Island 3), so I decided to come up with a solution for it. This is the first step, which just organizes the sound files. It does not yet organize the voice files based on character, but I'll implement that sometime soon. I always wanted to make a media player of some sort, and this is where this plugin is heading towards. Eventually you'll be able to play the sound and audio files, as long as you have support for them (like an OGG plugin for DirectX and whatnot). I have already messed with playing files, but this version does not include that feature because it's still very buggy.

I wanted to release a full-featured version in one blow, which might be the next version you'll see, but I wanted people to test this to test AGS Editor plugins and also to test .NET-based plugins, which was not the original idea supported by CJ-. It seems to work very well, just follow the 3 step install process in the readme file enclosed with the plugin.

Enjoy!

Update: There's a new update to the plugin... download it if you downloaded it before the "Last edit" date on this post.

Drugs is a pretty general term in english, but in that context I guess I was referring to the non-drinkable, illegal drugs. it's just easier to just type the word drugs. I use it like saying "kicking your ass".. I don't litterally mean that I'm going to actually kick you in the ass :P And as I said, I don't see drugs, in general, as something inmoral... therefore, alcohol consumption is fine with me.

I think with drugs there comes a big responsibilty, tho, to keep you from destroying yourself, as Mr. Hyde said. Alcohol is definitely a socially-acceptable drug, but you gotta "drink responsibly" as they say in comercials. The thing is that depending on the drug you do, it's usually easier when the people around you accept it, too. I think the social aspect is a big part of it in some cases. I think a big reason why I don't do the illegal stuff is because it's treated like such a taboo, and the people I know act all shady about it.

I wonder what the ratio is between social and other reasons, on any kind of drug. I guess it's also easy to crutch on a drug to "solve" your problems. I know what it's like to have a crutch of some sort... it's hard to let it go. Fortunately, it's not a drug, but sometimes I do feel like I'm addicted to it... hahaha... I was just reading this and it almost sounded like I was talking about masturbation. No, it's not that. :D

I truly believe the reason drugs are illegal is not because they're immoral. I think it all has to do with capitalism, because if they legalized drugs, all of the sudden I think a lot of big drug companies would come out nowhere, specially from the whole Colombia and Mexico cocaine/marijuana thing, and there would be a whole new market the (US) goverment is afraid to deal with; the same reason why they kept communism down, and then they call it evil. Then again, communism was just a big excuse for corrupt officials to shamelessly steal all the money while calling it a revolution,  while in capitalism is about stealing money the business-like way. ANYWAY, These drug companies would become as big as legal drug companies like Merk and so forth. Still, there's a lot of people who have became filthy rich from trafficing drugs illegally, but how much of it is fantasy and how much of it is real?

I don't believe drugs are immoral, yet I don't do drugs. Partially because of the above reasons; I guess I don't support that whole underground illegal operation, specially since I lived next to the drug-stereotype country of Colombia. I also believe that you don't have to try everything that's out there; maybe I'm just too plain and boring, but I just like the way I am. I don't think rebellion comes from dressing up differently or getting tatoos and piercings... that's what MTV made everyone think it is. Some people I know do it, though, and I guess I can say it kind of bothers me because I still don't understand why they have to try them. My friend detests even smelling like regular cigarrette smoke, and he's con-smoking, but he doesn't mind smoking pot, which actually has a worse smell... I just find that totally silly. I do drink alcohol, but not because to get messed up; I just like doing it. I don't like smoking, so how would that justify me smoking pot? That would just be being a hypocrite.

I've just read on Yahtzee's site that it took him three weeks to make Odyessues (sp?) Kent...WTF?  Not that it's a work of art or anything, but it's a solid game...

Ah, here's the deal... Yahtzee doesn't go to school, like most of us do! So he had time to sit down and work on the game very well, plus his thing was writing so he also had time to develop some great dialogs for it and so forth. I'm not to sure what his work situation was, tho; I never really asked him.

Games take a long time to make, specially if you're out doing so many things. I have to survive school, work on other projects, shoot some video.... I'm getting organized this summer and I hope to have something finally done. It was a lot easier when I was 14, and I had no worry on whether the game even made sense (and that's why T. Drunk Island is the way it is :P)

Just do what I do. Provide a fancy installer with html manuals and whatnot, and a zip file with a simple readme.txt manual (two options!)

I personally like installer for bigger games like pleurghburg or king's quest VGA and whatnot, but I think demos, ron, or mags games should just be on zip files since you play them quickly and there's no need to have them installed

Here's a performance test I did with J#, C#, and VB on Visual Studio.net 2002:

Procedure Tested (Pseudo-Code):
========================
fibo(n)
{
    if (n < 0) return 0
    else if (n = 1) return 1
    else return fibo(n-1) + fibo(n-2)
}
Results for fibo(40)
==============
C# - roughly 5.2 seconds
J# - roughly 6.4 seconds
VB - roughly 8.4 seconds

However, if you write the procedure with a while loop and no recursion, the total runtime is actually 0 seconds for all three programs!  :o Even if you do like fibo(1 million), which would take a long time to calculate with recursion, it still gives out an answer in less than a millisecond.

Wow, in the past few hours I've learned a lot of at least designing the forms... they look great on AGS. However, I keep running into this thing where the panel background color in the editor is white, where in the IDE it has the default control (since it's windows xp, it's that creamish color). Anyway, I can even change the color of the background and it works, but it looks like the default color is white instead of the actual window color. Is this a bug?
