I used a gosub... EVERYONE knows you don't use gotos! ;)

I think I would rather use GameMaker if I were to make a platformer, because then I could let the basic part of the game be done by GM and then I could work on all the more advanced stuff myself, rather than having all the coding be just to get keyboard control of the character...

However, we all know GM sucks bigtime, so, so as not to take up any more of this thread about Yahtzee's game with my own inane drivel, if you think I could make an OOTW clone without too much problem, drop me a PM sometime when you aren't too busy...

Back on topic: How do you
Spoiler
get in the room with the grate? In my awesome glory I decided to jump down there and spend 10-15 minutes just jumping up and down and trying to use the wrench.
[close]

EDIT: that would be cool, but, like I said, I'm not a big-time coder, so I hope you commented alot of it...

Progz: the sarcasm here is against myself, for being an idiot, not you...

Go code it yourself, Esper.

Okay... here we go...
Code: ags
1 print "ESPER's GAME"
2 input "What is your name?" a$
3 print "Hello," a$ ", how are you?"
4 gosub 9
5 print "I guess you don't want to play any more :("
6 print "score= "score$
7 print "GOODBYE!"
8 end
9 print "Do you want to keep playing?"
10 get a
11 if a="n" OR if a="N" then return
12 print "Yay! You want to keep playing!"
13 print "Unfortunately, I suck at coding, so this is all you'll ever see!"
14 end

I could use Game Maker if I really wanted to, but there's just something I like about this type of game, even if it isn't exactly like OOTW or Flashback, that I couldn't do without a specifically tailored engine... OOTW, IMHO, was one of the best platformers EVER...

yay. I'm working. I've been sitting here for the past three hours whiling away my night balancing the books for the hotel and playing 1213. As a nice New Years Eve present somebody could tell me how to get in to the room with the ventilation shaft before I shove a stick of uranium up my own ass, set myself on fire, and then go hug Yahtzee. My New Years resolution is to beat that sumbitch before I leave work at 7 AM. I'm in Arizona, which is GMT-7. The clock is ticking, people...

No, really. Happy New Year. Y'know, I was playing World of Warcraft today, and my guildies and I got holed up in Refuge Pointe by a bunch of high level Horde, and we couldn't escape. You know why?

The friggin' guards were drunk...

stupid New Years celebration in other worlds that shouldn't rightfully be using the Gregorian calendar...

The jagged edges sounds like an antialiasing problem... I suck at it, but if you type that word into the search engine you will find a tute or two (the one on Eric's site is down...)

I've totally got to agree. Lewis wrote Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, A Grief Observed, Miracles, The Four Loves, The Weight of Glory, Reflections on the Psalms... Not to mention the Perelandra series, which is also a very close Christian allegory. He was a famous apologist that coined the "Lord, Liar, or Lunatic" argument...

I can understand how you can say J.R.R. Tolkien didn't do his allegories on purpose. Because he was a devout Catholic, things just leaked in to LOTR. When asked, Tolkien demanded to everyone that he had not written a Christian allegory on purpose... Neither had he written a novel about Hitler and the second World War, neither had he tried to be racist (the orcs are black, and the elves are Aryan)...

However, to say that C.S. Lewis didn't mean to do it is like saying C.S. Lewis was a complete moron with MPD. I'm not religious... I'm not evangelical, or denominational, or fundamental, or any of those other words associated with religionists and "churchianity." What I am is logical. It doesn't MATTER if someone translates something C.S. Lewis said as meaning he didn't mean to do it, because if Jack really said that, he's an idiot ANYWAY, and nothing he says from that point on can be taken seriously.

I think what he meant was "You can enjoy it whether or not you're a Christian, because the picture there doesn't have to be viewed as the picture I intended it to be. It's a nice fantasy story. However, Aslan is a type of Christ, and I believe, although I'm going to try to be humble and not say it outright, that God made me do it that way, like when a sculptor says 'my sculpture was there all along, I just had to trim away the stone around it...' "

KAAAAAHHHHHHNNNNN!!!!!

Um...

I mean....

YAHTZEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

I have been wanting to make a game like Out of This World (why do people keep calling it "another world?") for years, but I could never find an engine that could do it up right. Now Yahtzee takes and uses AGS to do it, of all things! Curse you and your glory, Yahtz, and you aren't even on these forums anymore! So I can't send you a PM that says

*Esper kicks you OMGLOLROFL!!11!!!1

Confusion...

In reality however he is an invention giving an imaginary answer to the question, 'What might Christ become like, if there really were a world like Narnia and He chose to be incarnate and die and rise again in that world as He actually has done in ours?' This is not allegory at all."

.....
.....
.....

That's just quoted from a wikipedia site on the Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis was deeply Christian, so his works had Christian meanings, but he did not set out to put them there, nor did he approve of strict Biblical or religious readings of his books.

Don't those two patches of text contradict each other? The first sentence says "C.S. Lewis said there was a deep religious meaning to his work," and the second sentence says "C.S. Lewis said he didn't mean to put religius meaning in his work." As a matter of fact, the sentence "so his works had Christian meanings, but he did not set out to put them there" kinda contradicts itself. C.S. said that he set out to write a book that was about what would have happened if Christ had incarnated in a place like Narnia, but then goes on to say that if there is any religious meaning in his work, he did not mean to put it there, and that his books are not meant to be read as such.

I find it rather hard to believe that the author of Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters, along with almost every other book and essay he ever wrote, meant such a thing. I can believe, however, that he was using a device (which he has been known to use in other of his works) by saying "I didn't put in the Christian parts" to mean "but Someone Else did" without sounding like he was saying "My book is inspired of God, so read it or burn in Hell."

Bluke and Guybrush apologize for using the word "allegory." They did not do a wiki search right prior to posting to make sure Lewis didn't say "It's not allegorical, it's suppositional..."

I will shut up momentarily. This is a Sprite Jam and everyone needs to STFU about the whole thing. First, though, I would just like to know if you meant for me in particular to shut up there. I mean, you did quote me and all. Because if so, I submit once again my entry to this Sprite Jam. Do you see that? That's a baby I'm eating. That's blood I'm wading in.

I think the facts that I was the only person who stuck up for LJUBI, that I told them there was no need to apologize because they hadn't done anything wrong, I was the only person that didn't try to eat them, even though I'm a badass baby-eating Wookiee and everyone else is a mere human, and that I, in my infinite goodness and mercy, personally PMed them to tell them everything was cool and smooth this over, is proof to the fact that I don't need to be silenced just because I made a little joke about Serbia being full of vampires and cows. A quick demographic reveals that I wasn't even right... There are more sheep than cows in Serbia, and apparently all the vampires have gone to Romania.

I respect you, your art, your humor, and your character. But let's not tell me to shut up any more, m'kay?

Oh, and by the way, the after-the-matter BOLDING of the word "everyone" to avoid further posting past Progzy's proclamation was brilliant... However, you still quoted ME specifically.
#471
Whoah.. what did they say before the edit?

Anyway, Nik, a ballista wouldn't mess with you. If they fired it from Serbia and aimed it at Britain, it wold probably STILL land in Serbia, and hit a cow or a vampire or something.. So you're safe.
#472
Man, what's up with that, LJUBI? Enough with this apologizing. You didn't do anything wrong. What you need to do is strap a brick to your foot and kick someone in the nuts. Go out and buy Lena a ballista and tell her to fire it in the general direction of Britain. Not only will you feel better (and vindicated) but that's just a damn cool gift anyway.

You're right. There is no place for love around here. That's why my entry is this badass sprite of ME[/u][/i] as a freakin' WOOKIEE wading through the blood of my recently slain everybody, getting ready to eat a baby...

The yellow teeth are not mine. The nerd glasses and freaky vampire hair are.

EDIT: .............and the bowcaster...

I was wondering if anyone could point me to an old english font that uses "f" for "s" like alot of early printing used to use...

I play guitar... Not well. I can only play accompaniment, and the strum patterns I can do on it are very limited... But I still manage to play in a fairly decent band. However, for easiest, I would say the feadog, aka traditional Irish penny whistle. I have one in the keys of A, C, D, E, and G, and have learned to play fairly beautiful music on one of the simplest musical instruments there is. They are also fairly inexpensive and obtainable at many music stores. They are easy to learn, but difficult to master. You could learn to play any song on one in a half an hour, but making the song sound fantastic is a task in itself.

I think violin, as has been stated many times, is the most difficult instrument. I have one of these, as well, that I have been trying to learn to play, but the "guesswork" involved (exactly where to put your finger, exactly how to position the bow to hit the string you want, etc.) makes it very hard...
#475
Did you also catch the bit about CJ sucking many buttocks just previous to it? Apparently, our friendly neighborhood Yahtzee wanted to work on a game on Christmas day...
#476
Y'know, the leftJubi is a girl... (That is, their leftjubi...)
#477
Thanks everyone who posted here. I've been away a couple days due to Christmas, so I haven't been back to reply to any of this. Dorcan, it looks like you work for Dark Horse.... I don't know that I can draw like that, but it's exactly what I was looking for. The comic in qestion is at www.esper.smackjeeves.com, and the strip in question takes place at the end of the prologue, which is six strips away. So therefore, I have a good amount of time to be working on it before it needs to be put up.

I might also mention that blacksmiths probably would not have nice drywall, or stucco, or wallpaper, or whatever we have here. Try wood. Or stone... Maybe some rafters.
#479
The problem that I see is that it DOES look like real sky... If you don't think so, you've apparently never been to Arizona. However, it doesn't match the pixel graphics of the rest of the scene. I'm not too good at pixel graphics, so I won't attempt a paintover, but I think if you had different levels of orange going toward a pale blue at the top of the screen, maybe with some auburn/sienna clouds, you'd be golden.

Is there a size restraint? Should we keep it inside the box of the original sprite? And does it have to remain an animation that could be used in a game? Or can I just load this joker into flash and make a full-length feature film out of it?
