Besides, it could be dangerous. If you took Helm's first suggestion, she might go a little too far. Then, you'll have to change your username to Stumpy.

Hmm. I thought "thief" was cliche too... But then you're idea on his motivation made it all better. I like the idea of a treasure hunter seeking after magickal artifacts.

The miner idea, though: I'm trying to base the game as much on "real" paranormal activity, rather than a fantasy style one. It sounds like an awesome idea for another  RPG, but I don't want to go too "fictitious" here. I think that real things can be scarier than anything we might see in a movie, and that is how I want to make this game... Things that are scary out of real life, I have always thought, would be scarier than anything fake if done properly in a game or movie. Even Psionics and Magick are things you find in real life, just not with enough evidence to back them up. Think of the ESPER world as the real world, only where everything you've ever heard of being possible really is.

I like hybrids too... I think what I might wind up doing is have the character choose his most important attribute in each of the three categories, and make the class based on that. For example, a Strength, Intellect, Luck would be a combination hunter-detective, while a Strength, wisdom, Faith, might be more of a Van Helsing type character, with a little knowledge of magick and the ability to perform exorcisms. I don't know, yet, though...

I have a very large collection of books on the supernatural and occult. I know off hand that I have about four different books on mind control that are in E-Format.

BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM!!! I don't want to turn this entire forum full of people into super villains, like Hypno-Robber!

When I was in college I used to hypnotize my roommate.

We used to have so much fun with this, including recording him saying "I hate Sarah, I wish she were dead (Sarah was his girlfriend)" and walking outside in his underwear in 20 degree weather... At which time we would promptly lock him out.

We figured if it were so easy to hypnotize him in his sleep, we would try for something a little more... exciting. We told him that whenever he saw a squirrell, he would be inclined to chase after it. The next day, while carrying Sarah's books, he inexplicably dropped them and tore off into the distance, screaming obsscenities.

This continued for a while, but he never caught any.

EDIT: shbaz posted while I was saying all that, and now I MUST say this:

With great power comes great responsibility. Bear it well, Peter.

General Discussion / character creation system
Sun 23/10/2005 08:21:39
Hi, all. I'm making the character creation process for the next ESPER game, and was wondering if anyone could throw some ideas at me, or tell me what they think of what I have so far.

It will be very unlike most "pen and paper" RPG character creation processes. The game, for those of you who didn't play Town on the Edge of Darkness (shame on you!) is about a group called ESPER (Extraordinary Supernatural Phenomena Explored and Revealed) that investigates claims of the paranormal and occult and ritual crimes. It takes place in modern times.

At first, the player will be asked which they find most important: BODY, MIND, or SPIRIT.
Once they choose, they then must select the most important trait of that attribute.

BODY: Strength (physical power), Agility (manual dexterity and bodily flexibility) or Constitution (Stamina, resilience).

MIND: Intellect (ability to store information), Wisdom (ability to think for oneself, perception), or Psyche (mental or psionic abilities).

SPIRIT: Faith (belief that luck comes from a higher power), Luck (belief that luck comes from Fate), and Will (ability to resist attacks on the mind or spirit).

Once you have chosen, you will be given a class description. The classes are (note: this is one place where I need some help. You'll notice a couple are empty)-

Ã,  Ã, Strength: Hunter- those who attempt to fight the darkness with physical weapons.
Ã,  Ã, Agility: I think something rogueish, but I don't know how to fit it in to this type of game.
Ã,  Ã, Constitution: I have no idea.
Ã,  Ã, Intellect: Investigator- a detective who uses his mind to outwit the unknown
Ã,  Ã, Wisdom: Funker- a "code word" for someone who practices magick.
Ã,  Ã, Psyche: Psionicist: Someone who uses psionic powers.
Ã,  Ã, Faith: Outcast-someone who, once a member of the clergy, has left their religion to battle the unknown. A modern version of the D&D "cleric."
Ã,  Ã, Luck: Skeptic-one who doesn't believe in the unknown, but is thrust unwillingly into battle against it. Although they have no special talents, a skeptic is ruled by luck, and so they get bonuses to almost everything they do.
Ã,  Ã, Will: Victim- one who has been thrust into the thick of evil and is only trying to get out. They, like skeptics, have no special talents, but they can resist the effects of magick, Psi, or evil more than anyone else.

So, what do you think? I would like to make this into a pen and paper RPG along the same vein as Call of Cthulhu, Chill, or the White Wolf World of Darkness games, but I also want to apply these ideas to a computer game. What do you all think, and does anyone have anything to add?

I need to move to your country. Every American game company would go "You Suck!" and hang up/slam door/rip up letter.

Otherwise, Shift-Printscreen (top right corner of keyboard, with scroll lock and pause/break) takes a full-screen capture and saves it to your clipboard. Then paste it into paint and save it.

But I'm straight......... :-[

I would try fifteen, but that's not exactly very down from nineteen...

Anyway, does anyone realize I never finished my little allegory from my last post?

The age thing is stupid, especially if you consider how technically, legally someone who is 17 years and 364 days old, has a steady job and is in all respects quite mature, can't buy a video game designated M.

[conclusion] But a thirty year old crack addict with a history of violence and forty bucks he got from pimping his girlfriend CAN...

Hmmm... I would say anything by John Williams is a given, though... :P

I'm sorry... This might not be worth an entire topic, but I found true glory.

While not a big fan of the movie "Van Helsing" (although I watched it simply because I am a big fan of Abraham Van Helsing, the original from Bram Stoker's novel) the music entitled "Journey To Transylvania" is one of the best pieces I've EVER heard. If you don't know it by name, which probably none of you do, it's the piece that starts out with some Omen music (chanting) and then goes into Flamenco-style guitar. I was blown away. It kinda reminded me of another "Omen" style piece, Gratua Cuun from Star Wars: Republic Commando.

So, as not to waste an entire topic, how about some other all-time favorite themesongs, or maybe themesongs you can think of that are so good as to be unworthy of the movie or game they are played in?

I forget which Tony Hawk game it was, but one of them featured a song that went "DIE! DIE! PSYCHO BITCH!!!" and I was playing it at my best friends house with his (fat) eight year old brother. I have never felt so uncomfortable in my life.

I know it isn't necessarily licensed, but maybe you can appreciate this, Kinoko: the first live, recorded song I ever heard in a game was in Lunar: the Silver Star for Sega CD. When it started up, I thought I was just going to be playing any old RPG, and then:

When all the land is peaceful and there is no real threat to us at last,
then comes the time for love, two hearts colliding into one great hymn!
But there are winds foreboding and there is a great storm that soon will pass,
Kiss me my love, and Go! The time for valor has returned again!

I will always remember that. It was the turning point, for me, in video game history.

Unfortunately, my .... hmmmmmmm......... [guess]nineteen[/guess] year old friend... that would require putting every child who wanted to go on the internet in a testing facility for a year, and issuing each one their own private psychologist. The age thing is stupid, especially if you consider how technically, legally someone who is 17 years and 364 days old, has a steady job and is in all respects quite mature, can't buy a video game designated M. It's quite foolish, IMHO.

Cool. Sorry to get "all up ons."

And I can't believe that's possible, about the COPPA consent form. That's whack. I've known eleven year olds more intelligent and discerning than certain college professors :D

I've never seen Jaws 2 (as I said) but I'm pretty sure Nik is talking about in-movie kids... Pretty sure. He only has one himself....

Pabs: There's a pill. It is of the "chill" variety. I suggest taking some.

Where was anyone, until you, hostile? And how am I making it worse? I'm sorry, I seem to have forgotten about the law... You know, the same one from the guys that say you have to be 13 to chat on the internet (snicker) that you have to walk on eggshells whenever certain people are around because you don't want to risk hurting their feelings. Who knows, because I said "We didn't make him that way" he could come in here some day, guns blazing, and take us all out! Then won't I feel bad...

CJ: is that serious? It totally can't be. Did Jack Thompson get a hold of the internet, now??? How can you have written parental consent to be on a forum or chatroom? And how is it at all enforcible?
