Isn't PASCAL a business language only, like FORTRAN?

Anyway, there are a lot of BASIC programmers in here, huh? As soon as I get my old compy back from New Hampshire I can upload some of the few finished executable BASIC games I ever made... I don't even remember which ones I did right now, but I think that would be cool. So what about following Nik's suggestion: everybody dig up some old game you never released, put it into a compilable (even if not finished) form and share it with the community?

I remember 99% of what I did was ZORK clones and character creation engines for games I never made...

Okay, they are either screaming "GANDAAAALFFFF!!!" or growling "GGGOOLLLUUUMMM!!!!" Or just playing their music at such an intensity that every chord is blurred together and it doesn't sound like something I couldn't reproduce in my garage with a mildly annoyed cat duct taped inside a dishwasher. Thank you, Mr. Hyde, for that wonderful image. I now officially withdraw my initial query about names of power metal groups...

Hmmm. I'm not that big a fan of metal, but the concept of a bunch of freaked out dudes screaming "GANDAAAAALF!!!!" seems to me like it would rock on for ever-so-long... Do you suggest any groups??? PowerMan 5000 doesn't happen to be a power metal group, do they? I don't aks because of the name, but because their music videos remind me of real-life anime.

I might be tempted to agree. However, there's a difference between immature and challenging.

EXAMPLES:

immature: Okay guys <snicker snicker> let's do a Sprite Jam with porn stars. The more nudity the better, and the bigger the boobs, the better your chances of winning.

challenging: porn music. Have you ever heard what is considered "porn music?" I recently heard some interesting new jams by a local group in my area called the Felonious Monks that were branded "porn music." It was actually really intriguing and sounded pretty cool, and was done tastefully.

However, I do like the monster lullaby.

Looking good... Proportions are a bit better now, although he looks like a totally different character. I think the major problem is the shoulders are too big (or the head is too small). Try moving the head up a couple pixels and thickening the neck.

And I'm glad he's not wearing the purple pleather pants anymore ;)

Cirque de Zale was your first game... EVER?

Whoah.... ::hangs head in shame for even referencing BASIC::)

Like I said before (did I say it before ::searches through previous posts:: ) Oh, wait, no! I didn't! How could I miss saying something about this awesome BG when I first saw it!!! This is really cool, and I LOVE the original, which is much more creepy and has a much nicer feel to it... even though the second is better drawn, the first is much more immersive. It really is fantastic.

My only real gripe is that, in both of them, the cabinet on the left overhangs the window too much. You can see this if you look at the top perspective lines on that cabinet... the one on the left is much longer than the one on the right. Also, the stovetop isn't drawn up to par with the rest of the picture.

I would really like to see you keep the lighting effects from the concept art with the finished project. It really gives it a great feel, and is also real eye candy.

Since AGS is full of developers, I was wondering what everyone did when they first knew they wanted to produce games. What was the very first project you ever undertook, whether or not you completed it, and does it even exist anymore?

I remember back in the day, when I was only seven years old, tapping away at my keyboard on my Commodore 64 (the keyboard on a Commodore 64 WAS the Commodore 64) typing out simple BASIC to make a game like ZORK, the first video game I ever played. I believe I called it Castle Quest, and it was a simple eight-room castle adventure with no real puzzles... just exploration. I followed it up shortly afterward with a choose-your-own-adventure style Fantastic Four game which featured a pretty big maze in Doctor Doom's dungeon, and then made the first game I ever gave away to someone when I was ten: an expanded version of Castle Quest with some puzzles and simple spells.

I also remember lying to my friend Rusty telling him I made the game Mondu's Fight Palace (Tongue of the Fatman) with a lightpen... But all of that was lost when my parents sold my Commodore and accompanying 1521 floppy diskette drive at an auction. For a lousy 20 bucks, I might add.

So, what was the first ever game or first couple games you ever made? What started what is at this point a seemingly lifelong obsession? And is it still around, lying dormant and forgotten on some untravelled sector of your hard drive?

:o You LIKED The Peace? Grollllfff!!!! (that's supposed to be a vomity sound) I admit the tune was catchy, but have you ever seen the video ? That is the weirdest crap I've ever seen! That bathroom was WAY too clean...

I should throw in, even though they're popular, I'm embarassed to listen to Evanescence. It's kinda like the music fat 15 year old goth chicks who spend all day writing bad poetry in little leather bound notebooks with pentagrams on the cover about how much everyone hates them listen to... But it's awesome nonetheless...

If it really is as good as everyone says, why don't they just try to sell it to Vivendi? Does anyone have any links to the developer's page? I'd be interested to see what's going on here.
#771
I was wondering if someone could help me. I know that there are a multitude of GUI tutes out there, but at present all of the links to them on the main page are dead, as are any links I found searching for "GUI tutorial" in the forums. Does anyone have a working link explaining how to make and program a custom GUI, or is there anyone who can take a second to explain it? Thanks

Also, while I'm still right here and since the above will probably be a simple answer (probably just a working link) let me ask one more question. Also, this is probably going to be a dumb question, but since I'm on my work computer right now and don't have AGS in front of me, I can't finagle and find out on my own right now: Is there a way to have your character or other characters go off screen? For example, if I wanted him to walk off the left edge of the screen and then come back in, for a cutscene, or if I wanted him to walk off the bottom of the screen but still have his shoulders and head poking up...

Vinny Babarino: www.callofcthulhu.com

Check that out. It doesn't use new, fancy-pants graphics. It isn't all spiffy and new-fangled and it doesn't have a billion explosions a minute...

What it does have is insanity, measurable by how much your character is seeing/hearing that isn't real. What it does have is the possibility for your character to go so completely insane that he'll kill himself without your permission. What it does have is NO GUI, instead relying on looking at your wounds to find out how much farther you can go before dying, looking into the barrel of your gun to check your ammo,  and looking in your backpack to see your equipment. What it DOES have is classic FPS action without relying on combat, rather pitting you against intelligent and unbeatable foes. What it does have is an awesome story-driven plot based on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. What it does have is giant creatures so terrifyingly disturbing that one look at them will make your character turn and run away uncontrollably and forever damage his sanity.

I'm really looking forward to it :)

It IS well drawn, but it is not in the least bit creepy. Especially not that kitchen. It reminds me of a much smaller version of the Brady Bunch's kitchen. If you want to make it creepy, think about what would creep YOU out if you were there... Dark, sharply contrasted shadows, making you wonder what's hiding in the room. Cut out ALL ambient light... Light should only be coming from specific sources. If the sun is shining, remember that it will only come in through the windows or down through the open part of the alley... It WILL NOT illuminate everything. Same with indoor lighting in the kitchen. Also, it's very clean, especially for a scary game. Break some glass. Throw around some litter. Hang a painting on the wall, then knock it askew. Grow some moss. Put a dirty gutter in the alley seeping some sort of green mist...

Nice art. VERY strong potential.

RelientK? Aren't they the ones who sing the song about Lion-O from Thundercats?

Just to throw out my oddnesses and guilty pleasures:
--I love nostalgic themes from things like Transformers and GI Joe and Thundercats and He-Man... There used to be a radio station around here that played them on Sunday afternoon...
--I like Blackmore's Night. If you like the type of music you might hear at a rennaisance faire, check them out.
--I sometimes have been known to listen to JPop (Japanese popular music... I especially like game soundtracks)
--Alot of oldies. I like the Monkees, too, and Elvis, and the Beatles, and just about anything from the 50's and 60's.
--I like cowboy music... NOT country and western... bleghhh... I like Marty Robbins, the Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry, that type of stuff..
---I like alot of different cultural music (Irish, such as the clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, The Irish Tenors, etc.;African, like Ladysmith Black Mambazo; Italian, like some of the Rat Pack used to sing; anything Asian)

And the worst part is... I'm embarassed to listen to ANY of it in public... :o

Thanks, itch! I'm working on a different game right now, but there are plans for a better, longer sequel. I'm sorry about some of the lousy character art :( But hopefully the next game will be much, much better, and I hope to hear from you when it comes out!

That sounds cool... I've always been a fan of out of this world... I've been wanting to be able to make a game like it for some time.

As for Crusader, I've never played it. Not a big fan of that type of game. Howeve, this looks cool. The graphics, etc... You should have kept the name as "Ho Hope," though, because there seems to be a ho in it. Why exactly does that man's p3n1s come out of his belly, and double-you tee eff does that have to do with the game? It looks like a serious game until you get to that strange but somewhat intriguing pic...

Hmmm. There isn't a smiley for what I'm looking for, here. I kinda want an angry face that looks like it's saying "FRAZ!!!! I'm relatively certain that NO ONE EVER GOES TO ACR!!!! And when they do, it's a bunch of nine year old fishburgers (with the exception of the recent post by Barbarian) that are like "I aer t3h r0x0rzzzzz hepp me maik t3h gayme aboot t3h dogge that wnts 2 eet fud!!11!!!!!" I'm mad serious about making this game, and will set myself entirely on a gasoline-assisted fire if I never get to make it!!! AND GAS PRICES ARE FRIGGIN'Ã,  EXPENSIVE IN AMERICA!!!"

Seriously, M0ds, go out and get yourself a PO box and I'll send 20 bucks to it to keep this here. Otherwise, at least please move it to ACR instead of deleting it or locking it!!!

EDIT: Or here's a better idea.... Let's change the name of this and sticky it and make a new thread for experienced gamemakers looking for crews, so that people will take it more seriously. Or start a "game ideas" thread... OR DO SOMETHING!!!!!

::whines like wee little whacker::

EDIT2: Plus, this is too long to go in ACR. It's huge, man.

EDIT3: Or this.... This is brilliant. PROVE ME WRONG!!!! You can't.... Because this is just too brilliant....

Let's start a thread for people looking to form PERMANENT teams... Not just for ideas of games that they want to have made, but people saying "Pardon me, I want to make a game. I'm a background artist." "Hey, I'm good at writing stories and proofreading." "Whattup, you, I is the mad awesome animator" "h3y, 1 4r3 t3h l33t h4xx0r pr0gr4mm3r" and then putting them together... Kind of like classified singles ads, only not classified and not exclusive to singles. And not necessarily an ad...

EDIT 4 (bordering on postwhoring): Okay, this is getting old and lame, I know... I'm sorry.... I know that there is a thread for people to offer their services, but this is not that... It's not for people who say "I want to make a game, but I'm no good at animating, let me go find an animator and ask for help," but rather for people who say "I would like to form a team of people that make games together, each with varied skills... " You get it, right?

Skip this post, unless you are interested in a really cool game idea by yours truly. Don't listen to Kinoko either (sorry, K, just kidding) ... Go down to my heavily edited second post to see where this is going...
______________________________-

Now, listen, dammit.... This is straight from M0ds' mouth:

I am implementing a brand new rule. ONLY post a topic asking for team members for a game if you include one or more of the following; screenshots, example of your work, storyline/synopsis of the game, music etc.

Example of my work: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=22452.0
Ã,  Ã, ESPER: Town on the Edge of Darkness.

If anyone wants to work on the ESPER series with me, that would be cool. I have a couple of stories lined up and a background artist. BUT that's not what I'm posting here for.

SYNOPSIS:
I am looking for a crew to help me out with an in-between game, not part of my ESPER horror series. The idea is this:

ROBBIE-29

Ã,  Ã, Robbie-29 tells the tale of a little service droid that wakes up one day with a glitch in his programming. He is normally just a janitor on board the freighter U.I.S. Maelstrom, but today he realizes he is something more.
Ã,  Ã, As he comes online, his diagnostics tell him that there is something wrong with him, so he goes to see the chief engineer. Unable to vocalize his problems, she sends him to run some errands, one of which includes cleaning up a mess caused by a strange interstellar traveller the Maelstrom picked up at Thoth station three weeks ago.
Ã,  Ã, When he arrives, he finds a strange biomass that he stores in his cleaning units. Upon discovering it there, the chief engineer sends him to the ship's library to research it. In the meantime, a strange area of darkness is approaching the ship. When ROB-29 comes out of the library, he finds the entire crew has been completely wiped out and there is no trace of the strange "guest." Thus begins Robbie's quest to find out what wiped out the crew of the Maelstrom, including the Chief Engineer, who was the only person who ever showed him any compassion.
Ã,  Ã, The quest takes Robbie to space stations, distant planets, and to the end of the universe, where a dark secret eons dormant is awakening.

Ã,  Ã, I have the entire story plotted out, and maps drawn of the entire game. All the puzzles are in place, but if anyone has any ideas for more, that would be great.
Ã,  Ã, I also have five backgrounds made that I will post tomorrow if anyone shows interest today. However, I am not toally pleased with them. If any background artists would like to join up and give new life to Robbie's world, or at least give better life to my backgrounds by doing paintovers, that would also be welcome. There are three decks on the ship, each with 4 locations. There are three planets, each with 5 or less, and a space station with 4 locations. Thus, there are roughly 36 total locations. After the crew gets wiped out, there might need to be some revisions to some of the rooms on the ship.
Ã,  Ã, I will of course need some music and SFX. What is needed will be open to interpretation by whatever musician would like to join, as long as it is a serious attempt.
Ã,  Ã, I am also looking for someone to make a GUI that would reflect the main character being a small robot without the capability of speech or manual interaction, but who can gain upgrades.
Ã,  Ã, The biggest thing I'm looking for is character artists and animators. I could conceivably do everything else, but I'm lousy at this. I was relatively pleased with Town on the Edge of Darkness, but I think the character art and animation left MUCH to be desired. I have concept art for Robbie, the Chief Engineer, and the ship's security guards, and have a good visualization of what the other characters will look like.

Ã,  Ã, If anyone is interested, please let me know either here or by PM, and I will (tomorrow, as I don't have my laptop with me tonight) send you the full story and the current backgrounds and concept art. I am VERY serious about this project, but my inability to do themed art has been hindering me. Help a brother out ;)

New version looks great. I would suggest emptying the pool and shredding the flag, though, but that's just me.

I think it might give it an added hint of realism if you magnetic-select the castle, invert the selection, and do a light Gaussian blur on the buildings in the background. This would serve two purposes:
1) Depth
2) Hide the fact that you are using real buildings in a CGI render.
