General Discussion / Re: Horror
Wed 28/09/2005 09:39:01
Sorry, Corey, but I must agree with just about everyone else in here... IT is just not scary. It was a good idea, and I like it because of the comraderie betwen the characters (was it Rui that said Stephen King was good at making characters.... That's very true) but it was not once scary. It was actually more ludicrous. If I EVER saw Pennywise, I would probably wind up laying down the law... And then once he left, there would most likely be some manner of urination down the shower drain to remind him not to come back. However, I have to deny everyone who said zombie movies and serial killer movies and stuff like that are scary too. Once again, ludicrissimo...

And no, you aren't evil. Seriously. I USED to be evil. I know what it means to be evil. And, whichever way you cut it, whether you are just a confused teenager or a member of a cult that performs human sacrifices, evil is just plain stupid. I still require the occasional bit of omnicide because I hate people and hope to never become one, but the whole reason I DO hate people is because most of them don't seem to understand that we all share this friggin' world. There's a degree of respect involved. You can think you are a god, but you need to remember that everyone else has the right to believe the same thing of themselves.

I would wonder how many people that have been posting here actually BELIEVE in the supernatural... It's cool to read books and watch movie and all that crap... But how many people actually believe in the supernatural? Alot of us say we are atheists, which would mean there is no room for the supernatural... But anyone who believes in ANY kind of religion should believe in the supernatural or just not believe in their religion. You can't have one without the other... Tom Hanks (I forget your forum name, but you LOOK like Tom Hanks with a goatee), you're a Catholic... You should know that Ephesians 6 says "We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against Principalties and Powers..." It was very admirable that you said you believed in exorcisms... Most Catholic priests do not...

So then, in our discussion of horror movies and books, is there a little bit of room for REAL horror???

Actually, I DO like IT as a movie, but not as a horror movie. The types of horror movies I like are those that you can see as being possible... THE RING made me not want to go anywhere near TV's, water, or little girls for months, and I kept seeing Samara in my rearview mirror. I still can't bear to watch static screens. The second one sucked, though. The Grudge also rules many a galaxy, although it showed the antagonist too many times. The key to good horror is, like in the Ring, to keep people guessing what they're dealing with till the very end. The Exorcist and it's prequel are also very good, although the sequels are not. (There is a scene in the Exorcist 3, however, that is scary as all crap... It involves someone checking out a room and finding it empty. He turns around and walks away, and as soon as the door closes, a white-robed figure rushes out and cuts his head off with a big pair of hedge trimmers. I work graveyard shift at a hotel and I can tell you, this hit close to home ;) ) Anyway, this is a discussion about the comic, not movies. I'm sure Darth will be along any second now to tell us to STFU...

BJ (all of them): Most intriguing stories... The only AGS games I keep on my hard drive.
Emily Enough: Awesome graphics and humor.
Town on the Edge of Darkness: Just because I made it.

There might be better games out there (____days a ______, 2 of a Kind, Apprentices, etceteri etcetera) but these are my own personal faves.

Heavy. No offense taken, but I doubt "when you have time" is a problem for a "3 boxes comic unrelated with games." Would you have rather I said, "No, Corey, I'm sorry, but that sucks ass, and 'IT' really isn't that great a movie???" (Actually, I do like IT, and own it myself, but it reaslly isn't all that scary, so no offense meant)... It was just a push to get him to improve on himself, and therefore shouldn't be an issue.

αφήστε το φτωχό γάιδάρο μου μόνο :)...

What is that word you just said??? I like it. Screw "avatar..." Commie dictionary writing bastards don't have any say in how I say my words.

No, seriously. I'm not poking fun of you. "Arvater" and "Arvatars" are two pretty cool words...

Here's a suggestion: Now that people have told you it's a good concept but might need better drawing, why not remake it when you do have time? I'm sure we'd all like to see it.

If there's a cliffhanger at the end of BJ5 you'd damn well better be in production of six IMMEDIATELY!

The entire torso should sway so that it makes about a quarter rotation on it's Z axis (away from you, then towards you). This could be easily accomplished by making the arm closest to you move to the right when the facing leg is extended and back to the left when the leg goes back. The arm in back should disappear a bit further behind the body when the leading arm comes forward, and then should come back out when it declines. Also, the rear leg movement is nearly perfect, but the forawrd leg steps up too high and then comes down too sharply, making it seem more like the walk of a woman wearing high heels.
Also, when RyRayer says "bumpy" I think that means the torso and head should go up and down (think DOOM) as he walks.
Otherwise, this is better than I could do, since I have no patience with walkcycles (yea, verily, or any other type of animation)... You might also consider closing his mouth entirely and closing his eyes partially.... He looks like he's running away from a ghost he's just seen.

As for your question about sidescrollers... Maniac Mansion was ALMOST a sidescroller... Only a couple rooms had any real depth. If you want to do this, you would just need to make two layers in your room. Draw it out entirely, and make the foreground a walkbehind... Here's a quick one I drew up in Paint just so you can get what I'm saying...

Where blue=foreground/walkbehind and red=walkable. It's still kind of 3d, but it's probably the best you'll be able to get. Only make a right and left-facing walking view, but make a special "facing up" and "facing down" view for when the character goes through a door or inspects something that is in either the foreground or background.

"Noobie Question" isn't an acceptable topic. Not that I should speak, since I'm famous for unacceptable topics as well, but....

To answer the question...
You can. You can quite easily. It means that you don't have to muck about using views and all the other animation stuff. If you want to make a first person adventure game, either go to http://www.adventuremaker.com/ or just go through the tutorial for AGS. As soon as you understand how hotspots work, you'll be very able to easily make such a game.

General Discussion / Re: Anime
Sun 25/09/2005 08:20:36
@ Cluey: Kai Doh Maru is only good if you like the anime that is totally artistic and sacrifices story and action to make a philosophical point. I consider myself to be a deep, intellectual person, but I can't stand that artistic anime crap.

I would have to say that ALL anime is glorious: even anime that I hate, such as Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. The reason I feel totally comfortable saying that is because the Japanese know their markets. We may see something like Pokemybutt, You-suck-oh, and other crap like that, and consider it to be just that (crap in it's highest, most unadulterated form) but look at American kids who eat it up to the extent that American stations, as has been mentioned earlier in this thread, play nothing BUT the shite anime on Saturday morning. It's no wonder, with stuff like "Loonatiks," or whatever it's called, where all the old Looney Toons characters are big beefy superheros, coming out by us. What we do come out with that works are all Anime ripoffs anyway.Ã,  Just watch the South Park episode "Chinpokomon."
Ã,  Ã, The only thing wrong with anime that is otherwise "good" is the poor quality of voice acting and dubbing. If it were not for the fact that characters go "oooohhhhhh" in between every sentence just to make up for a gap in the script, and sometimes have to say a line very quickly to make it through in time (who knew that "yah!" in Japanese was the equivalent of "Super Ultra Neutron Molecule Rocket Blast Supreme!" in English), I think it would not be quite so "embarrassing" to watch anime. I think some anime is the best stuff I've ever watched, but because of the cheesy dialog I'm afraid to watch it with anyone for fear of being made fun of for an eternity thenceforward. Rorouni Kenshin would probably be the best storyline ever (has anyone ever seen the last episode, Reflections?) if it weren't for all the chibi and oro they use.
Ã,  Ã, The first anime I ever saw was Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind, which was tremendous. The first anime I ever saw that I recognized as anime was Appleseed. I have since seen hundreds of anime, and there is no doubt: the Japanese "have the skills of an artist" that Americans don't have. We simply cannot draw machines and vehicles like they can. We don't spend as much time on our backgrounds. We don't ever even shade. We only draw things from certain angles while anime artists feel free to use any angles because the commie bastards know they can. They might draw faces funny (BESM, big eyes small mouth) but they can illustrate beautiful and anatomically perfect human bodies of both genders. They can animate action in ways that no American artist would ever dare take the time to do.Ã,  Even their crappiest shows top some of our best ones. If you ever see an American show that looks like it could top an anime, watche the credits.... Chances are ten to one that someone of Asian descent, or even a large crew of Japanese or Chinese artists were involved. Some of my favorite American-made animated movies (The Hobbit, The Return of the King, The Flight of Dragons, and The Last Unicorn, to name a few, not to mention shows like Transformers, Thundercats, and Voltron) are "all arted up" by the Japanese.

Another bonus of anime is that there are genres that they just won't touch over here in America. I love Sci-Fi, fantasy, paranormal, etc.... None of these topics are ever touched by American producers, but it is commonplace in Japan. Shows like Outlaw Star, Macross, Witch Hunter Robin (one of my all-time faves), Trigun, Robotech, Fullmetal Alchemist, Paranoia Agent, and Cowboy Bebop break the genre barrier, and these are just Americanized shows you can see on Adult Swim.Ã,  If you go into some of the more Japacentric shows and movies, like Harmagedan, Tokyo Godfathers (which is, by the way, good, for those who were asking), Nausicaa, Appleseed, MD Geist, etc... You get into a whole new world of excellence.

And we won't even go into the fact that the Japanese dominate the video game scene. Every video game you ever liked was probably Japanese... Even Mario (but wasn't he Italian?)... When Microsoft said they were coming out with a system, no one thought it would succeed because it was an American based company with no Japanese backing. The only reason it did well was because Bill "The Dominator" Gates has a monopoly on everything... And it still stands to reason that awesome games like Halo and Halo 2 are only awesome because of the level of graphical quality and the amount of bitticks you get to kick. There really is minimal storyline, and all the "futuristic" elements are textbook replications of other successful science fiction (which was probably Japanese to start out with).

I still feel nerdy watching it, but who cares as long as I like it?Ã,

Ah, right you are. Beyond Zork was the Coconut of Quendor... That be it. Of course, Zork 2 and 3 weren't any good because they were just building on the success of their predecessor, which never comes out alright. They were pretty much the same game with different plot elements.
I had the priviledge of playing Zork 1,2,3, 0, and Beyond Zork, LGoP, Hitchhikers Guide, and Lurking Horror on my Commodore 64 back in the day, but Infocom re-released them for PC about 10 or so years ago. I bet they are still available, and most definitely could be found on Ebay. As for Anchorhead and some of the others, they are freeware. And I'm pretty sure there's a place where you can play Zork I as a Java applet if you look hard enough online...

Awesome graphics and animations... I like the idea to have tha character "talk with his hands..." I did get stuck in the bar, though. It took me forever to find out how to get back out once I got in.

But Sherlock Holmes didn't die ;)

(neither did Moriarty, if you accept The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen as canon)

Wellington: You completely forsook the grandmother of all games: ZORK, and it's many incarnations (I like Zork 0: the Coconut of Quendor the best). It seems as though only one of the games you picked waas a real Infocom game. Although I have to agree that Anchorhead is really good. And what about that old favorite, Leather Godesses of Phobos!

I think the best adventure game of all time was Nocturne, which I just posted about elsewhere....

Scumm: Outlaw Star is the rockinest of rocking series! Now that you've thrown that out there, I think it would be cool to see Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Witch Hunter Robin done as games. I think OS would lend itself to a game environment, especially adventure or platformer, since Jean Starwind had to use the right type of ammo against the right enemy at the right time.

As for the topic at hand, I would make a sequel to the little known horror action/adventure game NOCTURNE. They were going to make a sequel, but it changed into BloodRayne which totally took out the realistic aspect of the Nocturne world and turned it into a superhero-ish blood romp. Nocturne was the beast for so many reasons: it had better lighting effects than most games coming out today, and it was genuinely SCARY, not just creepy, gross, or make-you-jump. The only game I've played since that was any scarier was Silent Hill 4: The Room. I don't know what I'd do to it, but it would probably involve being able to make your own paranormal investigator (even though The Stranger was one of the coolest game characters ever) and have more of a non-linear plot. Then I'd throw in some Sanity effects like in Call of Cthulhu:DCotE  and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.
Also, the game had fixed cameras but you could go into a first-person "nightvision mode" which was cool, because this game takes place in the thirties and the nightvision is a secret govornment prototype that looks like you're looking through radio waves (weird, I know)... I would make it easier to navigate and aim in that mode...

The greatest supervillain ever is the Joker. Alot of people see him as being just some weirdo, but it's not until you read some of Frank Miller's work where you can really see that the Joker isn't the Assclown that Mark Hamill, Cesar Romero, and Jack Nicholson made him out to be (but then again, everyone who ever played Batman did the same to him). The Joker is a truly horrifying enemy: true madness incarnate. His desire for omnicide and his complete lack of compassion for anything that breathes... In The Dark Knight Returns he poisons an entire Boy Scout troupe to leave as a present for the Batman... There is of course the fact that, although it was in the movie that Batman actually created him, that the Joker only exists because Batman does... If there were no Dark Knight, there would be no Clown Prince of Crime, which is a fact that has made Batman numerous times want to hang up his Batarangs. The Joker might not have any superpowers, but what he lacks in that department he totally makes up for by just being truly and entirely psychopathic.

General Discussion / Re: S*T*O*R*M
Wed 21/09/2005 09:09:16
You're done for. You must realize at this point that the "S" must stand for Special, Secret, or Stealth. The "T" must stand for Tactical, Team, or Terrorist. The O must stand for Operations, Organization, or Operatives (smaller articles, state of being verbsÃ,  and prepositions rarely if ever get put in an acronym, so that kind of rules out "or" or "of"). "R" must stand for Resistance, Reconaissance, or Revolution. "M" must stand for Mission, Military, or M... umm... Mmmm... Muu... Mother.... ummm. Okay, just Mission or Military. Simply come up with a simple program to randomize these {a=int(rnd*3)+1)} and then put any necessary SOB verbs, prepositions, or articles in.
Ã,  Actually, I like the idea not to give it a meaning. I mean, what in god's name did "DUDES" stand for in the old NES game "BAD DUDES?" In case you didn't notice, it had periods between each letter. What about operation: WOLF, or Codename: VIPER, or any of those old NES games that never gave you any idea what you were supposed to be? What did the A stand for in A*Team, and what did COBRA stand for in GI Joe? Speaking of which, why was a crack team of military specialists called "Govornment Issue Joe" for anyway? See? Just keep it as it is. No one's going to care anyway.
Ã,  One of my favorite shows ever has got to be Witch Hunter: Robin. Robin works for a secret organization called the STNJ. I love the STNJ, and think it's the coolest combination of four letters to be had... However, not anywhere in the 29 episodes that comprise the show did I ever find out what "STNJ" stood for...

"You've just fallen for one of the classic blunders, the first of which is to never get involved in a land war in Asia, and second, and only slightly less well known, is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! HAHAHAHAHA ::thump:: "

Another classic, though not as classic as Monty Python (every sperm is sacred)...

Why not just start discussing religion? It's almost like we've got the Bartians versus the Stewieans versus the Anazoidbergs in here....
