General Discussion / Halloween Special!
Tue 31/10/2006 14:09:26
Here's the latest from my gang of video jokesters, "That's Awesome!"

Happy Halloween, and feel free to leave comments here or on youtube.com   Everyone enjoys reading what you think, especially the guy who plays Brawny Man.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=MSU_1pRIlUs

P.S.   Thanks for visiting last time timosity.   I didn't realize anyone had posted until the guys were all sitting around and someone said, "oh hey, did you see that a guy from Australia commented on our movie!?"   Haha.

Aye, tis a sad day when the author of a video game no longer has a copy.

I remember the minutes I slaved away creating the unique walk animation of the protaganist and mail courier of the galaxy.  And the mere three hours it took to create the game.

Pity it was an "hour" game.  I hosted it at one point but have since lost it.   If you were around years ago and downloaded every game released ever - please take a look in your old CDs etc.

I would love to play Space Mail again for that glorious 2 and a half minutes.

thank you,

General Discussion / Sharing games with kids
Fri 25/03/2005 10:56:12
It's been a good long while since I made a thoughtful adventure game related post.

But I was just remembering this past summer when I let my boss's 7 year old son help me with the King's Quest remake.  He loved it, he's such a smart kid.  He would tell me "try the feather with the snake!" really excitedly and got really really excited when we figured out puzzles and saw new animations.

Has anyone else found adventure games really useful when spending time with kids?  I've babysat a few times and I'm convinced playing Monkey Island with young people is a lot more entertaining than watching Harry Potter for the fourteenth time.

They have such a fresh perspective, and watching them reminds me of my own childhood.

Maybe there is a young child in your life who you have not thought to share adventure games with?  Try today, and tell us how the kid reacts, if he likes it or if he finds it boring.

I know I sound like a televangelist.

This is a poll.

http://www.aintitcool.com/poll.cgi?pollid=266

My film is playing at a film festival with a movie called "The Roost."

This online poll will determine which films Aint It Cool News will review.  Needless to say, I want them to review "The Roost" so they see my short film.

If you could click on that link and choose The Roost, you will be doing me a favor beyond the clouds of Olympus.

Right now I am tired.  I saw Todd Solondz new movie today.  If anyone is a fan I'd love to talk about it tomorrow.

Again, "The Roost" :

In my opinion, you're better off with Yahoo or Gmail.  For those of you who have used Hotmail for years and have constantly deleted emails to maintain your lofty 2mbs of storage- Rejoice.

General Discussion / Won a Contest
Mon 08/11/2004 09:48:47
Hey, read up www.bloodshots.org

Two weeks ago, I competed in the 48 hour filmmaking challenge.Ã,  Jack McWilliams and myself produced the film which ultimately won the award in Austin.

Then our film competed against films made in Vancouver.Ã,  Robert Rodriguez, creator of El Mariachi, watched the nominated movies and selected mine for the grandÃ,  prize.Ã,  They announced the winners on Thursday.

Here's the movie. (help us save bandwidth by right clicking, and selecting 'save as')

It's called "Dos Blokes" and it has plenty of gore. In fact, don't watch it if you're disturbed by blood, lawn care, or australian teenage self-esteem issues.

P.S.- LGM's movie blows.

General Discussion / Jesse Applies For TV
Fri 01/10/2004 12:13:08
**ego alert**

A spokesmen for a new US television channel has interviewed me, I've made it to the next step, and now I need to make a video submission about myself.

So I have an idea.Ã,  Instead of putting just my face on the tape - what if other people across the world each told the employers one simple fact about me?Ã,  (ie: "Jesse has blown stuff up in movies. I can respect that."

It would be a series of quick cuts, each AGSer saying one line of dialog, and preferrably somewhere "recognisably foreign."Ã,  (AKA outdoors and not in Texas)

Please, anyone with the resources to do this, I would greatly appreciate the help.

If you have a camera and software- but need help, let me know. I can host files etc.

General Discussion / The Wonders of Democracy

http://news.google.com/url?ntc=0M0B0&q=http://edition.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/07/09/senate.intelligence/

What's interesting about my nation's government is it's flexibility.Ã,  One year, men can do horrible acts of wrongdoing, and the next year - claim that the action was a mistake while still reaping the benefits of that action.Ã,  Blame is put on several individuals, and those individuals are expected to carry the guilt as the nation moves on into new blunder.Ã,  Ã, This way, when other nations argue "What you americans did was evil", we simply nod or heads in agreement and say "Yes it was, but don't worry- we're tossing the wrongdoers out of office- this kind of mistake will never happen again."

For your replies,Ã,  I would prefer to keep personal US / Iraq arguments down to a minimum.Ã,  Instead, I would like to discuss this dynamic ability of the US to change out its leaders with each new embarrassment.Ã,  Ã, Where will this lead?Ã,

My senior year in high school, I was certain I would die of testicular cancer.Ã,  After seeking advice from my family, it was decided that a health practitioner shouldÃ,  examine the "area in question."Ã,  Ã, Sitting in the waiting room of the doctor's office,Ã,  I couldn't help but notice that every other patient was less than two years old.Ã,  Embarrassed to be visiting the 'wee wee' doctor, I considered skipping my appointment until a particular issue of Highlights magazine caught my eye.Ã,  Several hidden picture puzzles later, my name was called.

Now, I challenge any man to fabricate a more awkward situation than mine which actually did occur.Ã,  On top of a baloon and clown pattern examination table, I sit with my pants and underwear removed.Ã,  The doctor, who just fastened her last patient's diaper two minutes ago, now had her rubber gloved hand on my scrotum.Ã,  I tried to repress thoughts such as "this woman is actually kind of attractive" for a full ten minutes. This served the practical purpose of avoiding erections, which were very potential.Ã,  At one point I cracked and I entertained myself with the thought that maybe she only appeared indifferent and professional, but deep down she enjoyed the experience.Ã,  Ã, "Jesse, I don't feel anything.Ã,  Show me with your hand where the abnormality is."Ã,  For the next five minutes my and her hand alternated on my skin as she repeated "Here?" and I repeated "No."Ã,  This is ridiculous.Ã,  Not only have I put myself through so much embarrassment, but this woman is going to tell me I don't have cancer.Ã,  I can't NOT have cancer now.

Well I didn't.Ã,  And the only justifying afterthoughtÃ,  became "Atleast I can live comfortably without thinking my ball is going to fall off."

The issue now is hypertension.Ã,  After seeing Super Size Me, and considering my diet- I'm certain I have a dangerously high blood pressure.Ã,  Luckily, this can be treated with healthy food decisions.Ã,  And hopefully any and all "ball action" from now on will be on a volunteer basis.

Fellow AGSer, you at one point suspected yourself might die, become sick, become crippled etc.Ã,  Some of you might be actual hypochondriacs whereas I only suspect myself to be one.Ã,

General Discussion / share this word game
Sun 06/06/2004 10:44:08
sheath  pirate ashamed brandy

These four words share a quality unlike most words.  Observe them carefully and report what you think it is that they have in common.   The person who gets the closest to the answer will be dubbed "king of the day with too much time on his hands." *Note- there are many relationships to guess but you will undoubtebly KNOW the answer when it hits you, so you may want to refrain from posting unless you simply want to help the next person*

I read this riddle in a bathroom reader and it frustrated the crap out of me.

By next semester, I hope to install a similar rating system to the one AGS uses for games.  The website UTfilm.org  will have a page with a picture of each student film, description, download, and rating.

How do I install such a feature?
A particular program or code?  Thank you kind web sirs.

Personally i really like toasters.  Especially the classic streamlined ones made of all metal.  You can breathe on it and then rub your hand over it and see your reflection. I really respect that.

How about you guys?  Any kitchen appliances specific to your region?

Gilbert? Wok? eh?

Scid? Waffle Iron? eh?

*Note, if someone takes this thread as inspiration to make "Who is your favorite communist dictator", or "What is your favourite "what is your favourite' Thread" - I will have this whole thing terminated immediately. This is serious and a valuable thread to learn from.  Cuisines in different AGS lands!

General Discussion / Rockstar Games
Fri 26/03/2004 00:13:07
Imagine working for Rockstar Games right now.  The work seems highly lucrative - the GTA series has sold over 30 million copies, with another game due in October.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

There's no synopsis or screenshots, but who wants to bet that's Los Angeles?  For all I know most of you have been chatting in various forums about this for quite some time - but I am really excited.  I went back to playing GTA3 last night and only then realized how much Rockstar innovates between each game.  It's not just a new city each time.  The level of interaction in San Andreas should really be amazing.

Not to mention- Rockstar also has the whole Max Payne series (which I'm not quite as crazy about) and ALSO the upcomingRed Dead Revolver, the trailer of which is a cinematic masterpiece.  Someone really studied their western films to get that look perfected.

Anyway, aside from gossip fanboy stuff- post here to discuss the future of gaming ala nonlinear environments and interaction.  Eversince Omikron dissapointed me with its supposed "lifesize city of limitless interaction", I've been skeptical.  But now it's looking like entire cities ARE being made, and one can just wander around in them.  How long before gamers can actually knock on any door they want - and find a unique family sitting around a table eating dinner?  Or interact with people not simply using violence?  Shaking hands, conversing, eating, kissing, intercourse, etc.

Although most of these popular games are violent in nature, their popularity might bring opportunity for a new brand of adventure game one day.  Imagine Vice City was a detective game where you solved crimes and there were no guns.  With a certain amount of interaction, the entertainment would stilll be there.

General Discussion / Perhaps the Best Time
Sun 10/08/2003 02:21:23
I have decided to take a break from AGS discussions.  I'm making somewhat an official announcement for a very good reason, I feel.

Two weeks ago, I told myself I would not frequent the forums so much as to encourage myself to be more productive.  I didn't post for a while, but then I lapsed and started posting all night long.  Also- these days with some of the stress caused by standup and work, it seems all I want to do is log on and harrass people.  I like this community very much but for me to continue to have a healthy relationship with it- I need to take an understood break. This will only work if the rest of you expect me not to post. Otherwise I'll let myself get too carried away again.

I told eric I may make it a goal to post again, only once I complete a game.  Haha, I won't make that promise - consider it a surprise and not an obligation.

Take care all.

General Discussion / Another video game movie
Wed 30/07/2003 08:43:24
Could interest some of you, as this one is a bit more of an adventure game than say.. Tomb Raider. This goes to show you what a huge market video games are, haha, oh god someone put me to sleep the day they decide to make "Myst the Musical"

http://us.imdb.com/Title?0369226

-- excuse me if this is already a well known fact, I just realized most gaming sites have probably already reported this. I thought the cast was interesting tho.
