No, I don't plan on anything like that.    ( You only brought up the harmless idea that Obama was the anti christ?)   You're pretty careless with your assessments of US political figures.

"I heard someone say Obama was the anti-christ".   (pretty harmless statement!)

The fact that impressionable minds will simply repeat what they see is evidenced in this very thread.   Don't spread unfounded filth.  Someone else will just go home and say "I heard Obama is..."  and its frustrating to a guy like me who actually does his own research.   That has been my point all along.

GET INVOLVED IN OTHER THINGS BESIDES CONSPIRACIES.   The primaries have been pretty exciting with the facts alone!   Don't make up or pass along the garbage and clutter it all up.  That's just careless.

Monkey all this "Evenwolf youre going off topic"  nonsense cannot exist in this thread.

You brought conspiracy theories.   I didn't.    Everyone in the known universe understands satire.   I just find it fascinating someone is watching Colbert and taking it literally.  You have Blown My Mind.   There's nothing I want to express via PMs.    If you don't get the joke from watching the show how could I possibly convince you?

Subtext.   Colbert defends Obama almost on a nightly basis through satire.

Um, slight sarcasm there but my point was more on the issue of US's "impending doom"  as in any time 1 - 50 years from now.

I think a world media is much different than general advances in technology.....  since when does vaccination effect public opinion.

I know I briefly mentioned Chaplin and Buster Keaton in my last post.    There are resources online to find public domain movies of both these guys.    You might think they are outdated but guess again.     They are just as funny as ever because they used a simple formula that's still universal today.

Download one Buster Keaton movie and watch it all the way through.    It will teach you more about comedy than all of  1980 - 1990 - 2000's movies combined in my opinion.

I'm looking for torrents right now.

Empires fall down. Inevitably. It's happened hundreds of times throughout history, and there's never really been a case of it not happening.

You could be right.  Just might be.   One factor we should all think about.   Every instance of empires falling down in history excluded the presence of world media outlets.   We are a fast paced world now with public relations and corporations becoming the new "western expansion".   There's no real land grabbing going on.    And human rights seems to be a common theme around the world.    But the US economy could just be its downfall.

I think the belief in aliens is a fantastic thing.     I would LOVE if it were true.    I just find it highly unlikely that humans can count on alien technology falling in our laps.

I think one day interstellar travel WILL exist.   But it will be the human imagination that creates it.

The human imagination is a very strong power.  Never underestimate it.   That's why I am very cautious when a human claims anything of the sort of an alien sighting.     WE are the aliens.      Outside ( or even inside ) this galaxy there may very well be extraterrestrial life.    But I wouldn't count on anything that has developed speech or the ability to use tools.  Humans hit the jackpot with those two.     So we need to reach out farther and farther into the universe... rather than wait for the universe to come to us.

As far as I can tell Colbert is the right-wing counterpart to Jon Stewart and has always been very outspoken in his anti-Democratic, pro-Republican views.

Monkey I understand your intentions.   Obama's rise to power = globalization?     He is the only candidate to openly refuse PAC money.  This does not scream globalization to me.   Clinton or McCain would be more likely NWO material.    I find your reasoning flawed.   Take Colbert for instance.  He is not right wing.    He is one of the most liberal minds in the US media.    His portrayal of a news pundit is a parody of Bill O'Reilly.    The point of his show is to make fun of right wing nuts.

Liberal liberal liberal. I cannot stress this enough.    How long have you been watching the show?

Should Obama gain the presidency it is the fears of these people that he will not stop there, he will continue rising in power until he is the ruler of the entire world.

Is popularity truly a sign of demonic possession?  Of anti christ status?   I suppose that's why the Backstreet Boys, Brittney Spears, The Pope, Michael Jordan, and Lance Armstrong are all so eviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiil.    Especially Lance - He feels no pain!   Must be Satan!

Seriously.

Coming out of the administration known as George W. Bush you honestly pose this question regarding Obama?  Are you serious?    The only reason I'm not really really really pissed off at you is because this is typical of almost every presidential frontrunner.    People's imaginations run wild.

As someone who has paid attention to every waking second of the primaries, I'm really insulted by conspiracy theory hoax malarchy.    This just shows blatant ignorance and I wish you sit up and get involved in politics BEFORE the point where its conspiracy theory.

I don't know enough of the facts to honestly have an opinion specifically regarding Obama. I doubt I would vote for him as president, but that's strictly because of my devotion to Stephen Colbert...:=

I hope this is the key to your post.   That the whole thread is satire.   Because I don't think most impressionable minds will get it.     Stephen Colbert is an Obama supporter as far I can tell.

I'm a skeptic.    I've never really sat around in space so I can't say how dust or water molecules move around in a moving craft.  But for the change of directions all I see is an object moving in an arc.    I don't see a drastic change of directions.

I'm holding firm that the first video shows something closer than what appears.   Condensation from the vessel, being left behind (hence why it fades into the distance).

I did edit my post.    Probably not static dust clouds like I said.  But I need to know whose information says that the light is 1.5 miles across?   That light is the strangest thing in the video by far, so that fact is important.

I definitely believe in Unidentified Flying Objects.       I just don't believe in flying saucers..

The first video appears to be dust particles between the camera and the outside pane of glass.  Or it could be debris that appears to be in motion due to the movement of the vessel.

The "large glowing orb" that appears at 3:30 in the second video is supposedly 1.5 miles wide.     Whose estimate is that exactly?   NASA or the guy who made the video?

They certainly cut some corners with the size of the map and the number of "fun things' like the eat to get fat and DDR type stuff.    But this is all good since they focused on realism.    The Euphoria physics are amazing!

I think I admitted long ago I got caught up in San Andrea Multiplayer.     I actually have a test server where I've been coding.    This is where I have been for so long.    *sigh*    Addictions.

---edit----- I posted this before reading Twin Moon's post.   He makes a lot of great points. Listen to him.   The player's "expectancy" is the only edge you really have.   I've expanded a little on that point, bringing in what I think is universal of all comedy.

Hi Babbar,

You said something very insightful on your own experiences with comedy.

Quote
Now, I'd like to believe I can be somewhat funny occasionally with how I pick up a certain thread of conversation and make a related joke. I can even relate something odd I noticed in a humorous way to get a few chuckles.

When I was young I hardly ever told jokes or stories.   But I would react to other people's comments and get a laugh.    The reason why is that when someone spoke I would get a visual image in my mind.     Then I spoke in reference to that image and people would find it so odd that it was "funny".   Sometimes they even laughed.   You might be the same way.     See, we are funny people.    But the humor is mostly reactions.   We are only half of the comedy.   Are you familiar with the stand up comedy terms "Set up" and "Punchline"?    They go hand in hand.   To set up the joke is to lead the audience into thinking one way.   And the punchline is to suddenly pull the chair out from under them.

At the core of all comedy is that same "gap".   A misunderstanding.   Take insult sword fighting from Monkey Island.  These jokes were created very much the same way you and I create laughs.   Person A says something serious then Person B twists the meaning.  (its all misunderstandings you see.)

Now let's take Monkey Island and figure out why it was funny even though it wasn't insults the whole game.  What about the fact that most of the side characters were bonkers? [ They served as foils to the plot... while simultaneously providing entertainment.]   Guybrush needs "his shirt done on time" and the dry cleaner misunderstands and says "Whats that?   You need to get a squirt gun for a dime?"  That's a simple joke that wouldn't have been funny if the guy said "I don't understand you."

Likewise its ironic to have a blind lookout or a female swordsmaster.   Everything is built around what you'd expect and then surprising you.    Meathook promises to come with you only if you face the ferocious monster he keeps locked up.    Well... it ends up being a parrot.    Time and time again there is a set up and a punchline.    If you stick to this formula you will eventually succeed at the art of comedy.

I want to paste something my favorite author has said about jokes:

"Jokes work this way: The Jokester frightens the listener just a little bit, by mentioning something challenging, such as sex or physical danger, or suggesting that the listener is having his intelligence tested. Step two: The jokester makes clear that no intelligent response is required of the listener. This leaves the listener stuck with useless fight-or-flee chemicals in his or her bloodstream, which must be gotten rid of somehow, unless the listener wants to slug the jokester or do jumping jacks.

"What the listener most likely will do is expel those chemicals through the lungs with quick expansions and contractions of the chest cavity, accompanied by grotesque facial expressions and barking sounds."   - Kurt Vonnegut

Kurt is right.   If you ever watch old Charlie Chaplin / Buster Keaton movies there was no dialogue.  No "jokes".  But the visuals were designed to frighten you and then suddenly make light of the situation.    The building comes crashing down over Buster Keaton...... and he survives because the window lines up perfectly with his body.  watch

Having said all this.....comedy isn't easy.   I gave up on stand up comedy because I'm more visually oriented.   But even with short films and sketch comedy I rarely if ever get a laugh.   The real trick is trial and error.   Over many many years.  But I hope breaking it down the way I did offered you something to build on.   KV certainly got me thinking with that passage.

General Discussion / GTA Multiplayer

Seems like every year I get distracted by video cameras or video games and this time its San Andreas: Multiplayer.   I've been playing on a server called "WTFman" for almost two months now so I thought I better own up.

I warn you it can be addicting, as any MMORPG can be.  I roleplay an attorney for a mafia family known as "Lawless."  I'm currently the mayor's lawyer, with a skill level of 5 in that profession.   Other jobs include: carjacker, gun dealer, taxi driver, news reporter, cop.  etc etc.

Here's a fun video of a rooftop destruction derby.   I'm in the black SUV:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA2Rg1nZ1Ns

Download the client:  http://www.sa-mp.com/
Add WTFman Server IP:  75.126.37.11:6777

Currently ranked 5 overall on game-monitor.com & 2nd in the country.  The player count never drops below forty and usually peaks at 100 on a normal day.  Come check it out and be brutally beaten and driven over by cars.  It's definitely an RP server so I advise you not to DM or attack just anybody you encounter.   It usually comes back to bite you in the ass.  If you can find me and drop me a hint, I'd be more than willing to show you around.   The best advice I can give you is obtain your license and get a job as soon as you can.

Cyrus, are you implying that you do not fear your own death?   Neither do hundreds of teenagers who commit suicide under the impression that there is an afterlife where they get a second chance.

I put the "delusional" hat on those without fear of death.   Thank you very much.

Don't get me started on the effects of feminism on the male youth.

A good analogy for what's going on this:   Angry feminists stand around a hospital ward.  They suddenly dash to the crib of a newborn baby.   "You male pig dog!   You should feel ashamed of yourself!"

Darth, I'd reflect on that same suspicion because that's what more americans need to do.

It''s typically not people who are offended that make these kinds of complaints.  Instead its "watchdog" citizens who suspect that such things will offend somebody else.   Or they think seeing too much skin will corrupt children or something.  But I can remember being like 6, 7, 8 years old and being attracted to the female body.   I'm not really sure where most people get off thinking its healthy to shield children's eyes from their curiosity of the opposite sex.

I swear more and more guys my age are nonsexual, and it has nothing to do with religious beliefs.   I think a lot has to do with these watchdogs causing all sorts of stress and creating guilt, shame, and fear regarding behavior toward the opposite sex.

More people should say,  "It really wasn't an issue until you drew attention to it, ma'am."

YAY, someone had to introduce pluralism to the thread.

It's not hypocrisy.

Yeah but I didn't have to dig very deep to find the hypocrisy you wanted.

Darth is right.   Humans are born naked & we are regressing.  Ideally, we should add a layer of clothes every year.

Tag this as politically incorrect but there's a very high probability the male flight attendant is homosexual.   Would the same incident occur if a guy had been wearing tight, revealing pants?
