That's how I feel about asian cinema too.   All the movies are so goood!   But I'm sure there's thousands I haven't seen that are just mindless drivel.

Extras is quite good.   Was it cancelled?    I usually don't like films about films (or in this case a TV show) but I've been an extra on a few movies:  Mike Judge's "Idiocracy" and Richard Linklater's movie that chronicles a boy's life until he's 14 or something.  So that'll come out when I'm 30.

The background extras on film sets are really like that.   Ricky's character is the snobby person who thinks he's a real actor & his friend is the idiot who's not capable of doing much else.   And its so much like Curb Your Enthusiasm, and I love curb.   A part of me is fascinated with watching people eat dirt.  And that's the resolution!  A horribly awkward situation.

Highlighting every piece of the Bible reminds me of something....

http://youtube.com/watch?v=E_EXqdJ4L7I

Each little phrase or quote in the Bible should be broken down by anyone trying to find spirituality.  How would anybody not have the right to do this?   Entire sects of Christianity were formed based on disagreements between tedious little fragments of language.

Skeptics have every right, and hope that more Chistians condemn us to hell while still preaching forgiveness.  Its what led me to the truth after all.

"Dear God,

I love monotheism.   Thanks for coming along after thousands of years and setting everyone straight.  Silly Greeks and Egyptians!   Anyway....   so which one of you is reading this?  The son?   the father?  Or that kooky ghost?   Question:  does the ghost have to ask one of you other two to open his letters?  Or has he mastered that skill Patrick Swayze learned from that guy in the subway? OK, peace!"

What part of God is just there?  His elbow?   His beard?   What is "there"?   I thought Jesus was the only physical manifestation... so god actually isn't there at all.

Yeah man.   I can't go back, not unless they've introduced the thread feature.

In my film organization I would send out mass emails every week, so instead of getting a bunch of scattered messages the replies were neatly lined up in a thread.   That's really the basis for my support.  That was really really big for me.  Can't go without it now.

For the first year I received absolutely NO spam in my inbox with gmail.   Then I started getting a few of the same sort.  Then a couple weeks later, No spam again!   Gmail must have fixed it that quick.

I agree that having your own space is nice, but I'm no webmaster.  Ive had organizations where I had my own webmasters but they NEVER ever EVER did anything, so most of the time having that jesse@organization.com email was a crutch because it didn't even work.  You seriously have to pay webmasters to update anything because the people (3 or so) ive dealt with were only motivated to be called "webmaster" and nothing else.

Yahoo and MSN, no matter how good they are with spam, ads, and space now.... would never have upped the ante if Gmail hadn't entered the arena and challenged them.  Remember when Gmail offered a gig of space?    MSN and Yahoo weren't even competing for customers.  They offered like 10 megs or something just pitiful.  You would have to clean out your inbox every other day so as not to be threatened by MSN to be shut down.

Love Gmail!    And what's evil about Google?   They refuse to give your search information to the government at least :)

P.S.   because I hopped on the boat so early I got my "middlename@gmail.com" & my "lastname@gmail.com"   I didnt bother trying to get my firstinitial.lastname etc.....

This thread is a place to reflect experiences with gmail since it began a few years ago.   The reason I pose the topic is this:     today I realized I have hotmail and yahoo accounts.  Haven't checked those in ages!   I log in to hotmail.  My account is deactivated, all messages gone.  I log in to Yahoo.  Same.

And I don't care!   I had never thought to check the accounts because they were so inferior.  Had redirected everyone (hopefully) a while back.   I'm so happy with gmail threading and every other feature.    Yahoo and Hotmail were so dull and uncompetitive.   Google you don't sell out, and for that I will always love you.

Eh, 400 years ago and you had Puritans.  Social trends will probably remain cyclical.

The last evolution thread featured me & I was being pretty hardheaded with my anti-religion.   It was important for me at the time because it helped me flesh out my own opinion.  I'm still battling inside with the contradictions religion infused within me.  Some of you might feel the same way.

But tag teaming Steel Drummer shouldn't be encouraged.  I see that now.

I probably would have rejected atheism if I had ever been attacked by atheists.   As a matter of fact, I had no contact with any atheists (so far as I knew) until I got to college.   This helped me because the hypocrisies I grew up with solidified the discoveries I made throughout college.  This method is pretty important for anyone who grew up with religion.  "Personal deprogramming."   Think of religion as a band you used to like.   Say you used to be the biggest Dave Matthews fan... but now you've moved on.   A friend of yours asks you "hey doesn't Dave Matthews Suck!??!"   You agree with him but secretly deep down a part of you finds his horrifying voice appealing.

colossal:  praying to God in order to fly.   I once wrote a letter to Jesus and buried it outside in the snow.  The next day I was horrified to see that the letter hadn't been delivered.  The paper was soggy and the ink trails still contained my message, "dear jesus. please give me a puppy."

Ricky Gervais.  We would have to take public transportation because he can't drive and freaks out above 25 mph.

Itinerary:

Mini golf
Lunch, tex-mex unless Ricky has another suggestion
Make a short film
Go for ice cream

Tuomas, while not familiar specifically I kinda figured.  I really want to travel to Europe and Asia someday.   For all the disputes among countries, I think it humbles people in a good way to have these heritages and relationships like you do.  There's a sense of vicinity.

Being isolated over here, Americans definitely have little to complain about.  Canada and Mexico really don't bother.  Our isolation accounts a bit for the "us vs. them" mentality we have.  That's something I can't deny.  That the US thrives on lack of diversity.

I'd part from the US for years just to travel, and live in a place like Estonia perhaps, just to spread a little diversity back home.

I got the deal where I'm so tied to God through childhood, that I consider him a weakness because I KNOW he's a myth.  And yet I can't help feeling he's there.

I reject what he does so if I end up in his afterlife, I expect there'll some option to give up.  If there isn't the option to give up then this life actually offered me more.

Eigen, are you certain there were no diplomatic or even covert happenings beside Estonia officials moving the statue?   I mean, if its part of a bigger issue moving that statue would definitely have been symbollic to these mob goers.

If all of this was strictly in response to the moving of a statue, then I'd say Russia has overreacted no doubt.  Sorry for any changes this might cause you in the near future, but you never know- maybe this was a kneejerk reaction and it'll be settled between the two governments soon.

Evenwolf, BB, I'm giving you 2 simple choices:

A. No one is carrying a gun, not you, nor the burglar!
B. Both of you carry guns.

which is preferable?

No guns period.  My answer.  No guns.

QuoteSay, how would you feel moving over here in the UK, or in Greece, or some other (non violent) place?

I would love it!  The problem is that I have family here and can hardly afford road trips two hours away.  I personally think gun control is a distraction away from bigger issues.  Like healthcare in this country, where many homeless people are mentally ill and would starve before anyone ever offered them treatment.  The "one man for himself" mentality is surely extremist when thinking about the mentally ill, as they have neither the tools nor the capacity to consistently remain productive without medication.  That's why I get angry when an incident like this is flagged "gun control" rather than "healthcare"  because this kid was stalking girls and taken into custody by pyschiatric experts, yet he received poor treatment AND was allowed access to supermart guns.   I do think this is ridiculous but it shouldn't impede on my right to buy a gun.  No I do not own a gun.  Hypocrisy?  Not the way I see it.

I think Cho Seung-Hui is a perfect example of poor healthcare & emergency response YET gun control howlers have totally skipped over the issue, preferring instead to blame an inanimate object.  Many european countries have it much better off than the US in my opinion and my argument isnt that your countries should follow suit.  Its that there is an established system that cannot reasonably or "magically" be solved.

The US uses most people and sustains their exsistence just so they can churn the economy. The government doesnt care about them far beyond that.  We are facing many problems economically and with our rights being yanked away with every incident people like me are very watchful.   I happen to think PR firms run this country.

Ugh, each gun does not equal 30 deaths.  That's mental illness.   Mental illness clouded his judegment.  Judgement is a mechanism most people have.   I trust most people.  If I didn't I would own a gun.

Becky, Andail's comments were regarding nuclear weapons only.  Helm disregarded the context too, so no worries.  Bullets = Nukes was my understanding.

No nukes dropped = no bullets fired.  anything else could be considered a punch or a stab.. but no nukes negates the allegory, I'm afraid.

Nothing happened during the Cold War? ?!

?!?!!11?!!?!?!!?!?

Oh my

There were a lot of scares.   I'll go so far to trivialze history if it makes you feel better.  For Andail: (altho secretly as not to effect helm's ego) "no nukes".

Andail, you'll find that I completely agree that targeting gun control toward the mentally ill is exactly what I want.  Your argument that everyone is suspect of mental illness until proven... uh guilty??  is a bit flawed but we are on the same side.  IF only we could regulate.   I just don't see any practicality, or a reasonable solution in suspecting everyone of being potential murderers. -edit-  I trust my neighbors much more than I trust my government.  I mean, look at my government!!!!

Charles Whitman had a documented history.  Seung- Hui had a documented history.  Fact.

-sorry for all the edits and the chaos herein but I must depart for the night!  Will respond most likely in personal
messages.

-final side to Andail:  Drunken people on the street are subject to whims yes.  We have strict laws in most cities against public intoxication and showing those signs.  But might I argue with you that the physical HAND of my government is subject to every one of those whims just the same.  A drunken sailor or an abusive cop doesn't necessarily asymbolize my country's tedious and delicate lawmaking, does it?  Emergency response is still pathetic and most cops are 'good ol boys' who use racial profiling.  If I were black, i would definitely own a gun.

The problem isn't the crime rate in America. It isn't that americans are more prone to violence than any other country (clearly they are not).

It may not even be the (relatively) easy way you can acquire a gun.

The problem is in the mindset of modern America.

"I better carry my gun to school/church/temple/the mall/this baseball game, just in case some nut decides to open fire in my vicinity."

I'm not saying that every american thinks like this, but judging by some of the responses to the VT massacre (contained in the media, and even this thread) it's clear that some people do.

How could anyone actually hope to relax in such an enviroment? Wouldn't you always be on edge?

"Uh oh, here comes that dude who I had an argument with in the supermarket yesterday. He's coming towards me. He looks a little pissed. Jeez, maybe he snapped. He could be packing! I better have my finger on the trigger just in case..."

Insanity.

I completely agree with you limping fish.   But Michael Moore sort of tactics (ie whining) didnt do anything productive to tell citizens how to go about making change.   And how do you change the American mindset?  Well it would help if there weren't mass murders in college campuses every forty years.

How am I supporting your argument when the only nuclear bombs were dropped on people BEFORE the Cold War.

There was no violence during the Cold War.  US had bombs as a deterrent, the Soviets had bombs as a deterrent.   You're the ambassador from Dreamland visiting both countries saying "Mr President, i think you'll find that your enemy will withdraw all weapons if you only withdraw first."   Deterrent.  Deterrent. Deterrent.  Nothing happened.

I am however weary to give nukes to mentally ill people!  And I think you'll find gun control lobbyists will have success if they switched their focus toward un-arming the mentally ill.  Instead they argue ideologies.
