Another ingame screenshot. You might say I'm spoiling you ;D

Update on progress:

9 rooms made (of 17)
6 new characters made (of 10)
I've done a lot of puzzlescripting and animation.
And some new songs and a lot of soundseffects!

Next I will continue with the tenth room as well as scripting another puzzle!

Sounds really fun! And with a good storyline too! Thumbs up!

That ark needs some perspective. As it is now it doesn't fit in at all. Look at my edit and you'll see what I mean:

Plus I think you should make the ark much smaller. Compared to the door it looks like a small house.

The lighting is brilliant though. Keep on going!

Hello!

I finally browsed the General Discussion forum and what do I see? Four pages of lovely discussion over my little game! I guess most of you guessed that this was something I wanted when I made the game as it is: To be provocative and see how people would react. Let me explain:

Firstly I must react to what flinnt're saying, that
QuoteIve just had to stop playing Frank the Farmhand as i found it quite offensive. To have to watch cut scenes of Klu Klux Klan members trying to burn a boy on the steak and having the word 'nigger' said every few scenes i think that it should not just come with a language warning (as pointed out on ags games site,) but with a racism warning also!
.
Well, first of all I must say that I don't understand the magnitude of your reaction. I'm not exactly portraying the racists as heroes. They're actually supposed to be stupid inbread illiterates who unjustly blame the black guy for something they're all afraid of. And this has happened so many times in history it's an indeniable fact that racists do so. (I.e. Nazi Germany and 19th century US).

Besides, nothing much racist happens except for the mouthlashing. The black kid doesn't get burned. And he definately doesn't get beaten up or anything.

I'm only trying to make a statement: Racists are scared. And they're scared because they don't understand the blacks. And they don't understand them because they haven't been educated about them (or spent time with them for that matter).

I've gotten some reaction to why the main character (Frank) treat Ben (the black guy) so badly in the beginning of the game. Those of you who've played the game knows what I'm talking about. He does what you often do in adventuregames; you use other people for higher goals. Had Ben been white, very few would have raised an eyebrow. Therefore I wanted to show that you can make fun of black people in games without it having to be racism. Frank treats Ben bad, but then saves his life because Ben's such a good friend.

Lastly I want say that I don't think it's necessary for Frank the Farmhand to have a warning (or even a note) about its content. Like so many have pointed out in this topic I must say that the racist themes in the game are not very grave. There's no racist violence, and the strong language has already been rated.

Potch said it best:
QuoteBeing a person who has fought against racism and the n-word (I refuse to even type it) for many years, you would think that I would find this game offensive.  But, in fact, I do not. /.../  We should not be censored to the truth.  The KKK has committed such attrocities on the human race, that is important to show it everyone to show just how wrong they are.  In reality, the scene was very true.  Things like that really happen.  The characters in the scene are in fact racist.  But the scene is true to life.  If the game was saying something bad about black people, then I would say... yes.  Put a racist warning on it.  But it is not.  It is depicting a very true, and terrible scene.  We can't shelter ourselves from the truth.

Another point to consider:  I am against racism in any form, but I think sometimes people take the censorship of it way to far.  /../
When we start sheltering ourselves from the truth, this is what happens.  There is no way to draw the line.  We would just lose too much.

I would like to ask Chris to remove the note from the game description if he feels that he can. I agree the game's provocative, but a warning like that could make people miss a game that they could find both entertaining and lecturing.

hey nice work, your BGs are getting better everytime. May i just tell you that it's (040804) though, welcome to 2004  ;)

Actually we write dates YYMMDD in Sweden. So I was infact writing "the third of August 2004". And thanks for saying that the BGs get better! Coming from you that means a lot considering how good your own BGs look!

I've edited all of the backgrounds I made with black outlines. Hope y'all think they look better now. I certainly do!

As a thanks (or something) for all you peoples support, here's a new screenshot from the latest room I finished:

I will let you know. The last part was quite buggy when released so I definately need help with bugtesting!
#367
Really cool story! I really hope you finish it soon!

Looks really great. But I don't like the neon-vines. I second what Gilbot said "they look flourensic lights/toxic waste/lasers/whatever". And the crystal just doesn't look much like a crystal. If you give it more detail it might work. One last thing you could do is to blur the bottom edge of the rock so it blends in better with the ground. Other than that its amazing. The grass look practically real, and the texture of the trees lifelike! Great work.

This is one of the new backgrounds for part 2!

What do y'all think?

I've been on vacation the last week. it was nice!
But now I'm back working on the game. Up to this point I've done

7 room backgrounds (of 17)
3 new characters (of 9)
a lot dialog and puzzles
and some of the introduction.

Well considering the amount of work put into these backgrounds I don't think 140 rooms sounds that impossible. I mean look at http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/r6.pcx. It was probably done in about 3 minutes. 140*3=420 minutes = 7 hours.

Well, it sure is a nice idea to do a mi-fangame!
Some crit though:

QuoteAnd well, I don't have any screens yet, well, most of them will be ripped from the first two Monkey Island games (The Secret and LeChuck's Revenge), but there will be some original artwork by Greg Wilkins. Hopefully. However, I do have some sprites:

They're not original sprites, but... Oh, and I'm also using Proskrito's MI2 Template.

So what're you planning to do yourself then? ;)
#372
Well, this is it! Now I know I've seen the perfect background!

It's just beautiful. No, beautiful doesn't even suffice!! It's magnificent! It makes me, and probably most of us, so jealous we just want to scrap all our backgrounds and just go to bed and stay there.

You've done it! You aced it.!
#373
Keep on goin', brother! You rock!
#374
Looks great. The cell-pic looks a lot like something out of Woodruff and the Schnibble of Azimuth. (or Goblins).
#375
Beautiful. Simply beautiful.

Looks promising! I liked the cartoony graphics! Sweet!
#377
Ok. That was a big diss. But hey it's your opinion!

Yes, of course the names Sam & Max's a ripoff. But as you said it's only the names that's the same. I just thought it was funny that they had the same names as our friends the dog and rabbit, and hopefully someone else did as well. Obviously you didn't though.

PS. Does everybody hate the MI-clouds?  :'(

can we see some new characters? maybe a revived main character?

You'll see a lot of new characters in FtFh2. And of course some characters from Part 1 will follow into this one as well. Frank, Ben, the Professor, Sam and Max.

Please please please get rid of the Bill Tiller cloud!

Sorry, but I've used it so much up to this point that I can't just change it now! I have to be consistent to the style of the rest of the game. Besides, I like it too much! ;)

Nice edit!

I liked what you did with the brightness and contrast. It was a bit to light and colorless before. Maybe you brought down the brightness just a bit too much but you made your point and I changed the image. I also removed the outline between house and ground like you'd done, and here's the result:
