Hi,
Ah, that is an easy question. I have painted with oils and I've found that normal brushes you can buy at newsagencies are good (where are you - country wise? I'm in Australia - newsagencies have these) and they work very well. Long wooden handle type brushes with whitish cream bristles make good oil paint brushes of many sizes from very small fine size to large size #10 to #12, and he can get flat and round bristle type brushes, and I would suggest getting both types depending on what he is wanting to paint. Those brushes cost me from 45 cents to $1.60. Do let me know if he has tried this already and how he goes if he hasn't. Hope this helps

Hello everyone! WOW I am staggered by all the entries. All of you have really put in the effort and each one looks so beautiful! It will be very hard to vote which ones I'm sure! ;) Ok the voting can begin now!! It will end tonight at the very last minute of the last hour :) but if you guys need an extension in voting, or there aren't enough votes or whatever, let me know here and I will extend :). I am going away for the weekend for a reunion but I should still have access to the web where I will be at. Once again, well done guys! Your rust concepts in the images really are breathtaking.

This is good cameron! I like white on black too. One thing I could say is maybe a bit more white shading around under the breasts and a bit of a thin curved line outside the nipple area, not the whole way that it encloses the nipple, just a quarter of a way. And possibly also a thin line down the middle of her chest/tum under her breasts just a short one, not very straight. Also maybe a bit of thickness under part of her nose, just a very tiny bit. I think you have done a good job! Is this for a game?

Hi, hmm I do agree with Cosmicr... it can be very costly. I like the idea of a weekend away. I work too and getting time off for me would be hard, being casual so not getting holiday pay. Weekend is perfect as this is when I'm not working. I am from Adelaide, South Australia but I grew up in Melb, so I would like to meet there, have a nice dinner out at a really nice place with the ags-ers. Love to eat out, there are some nice resturants that I could suggest if you like... and also country town sounds nice.... maybe Daylesford in country Vic or just some nice country town where everyone can meet up at. This is a good idea, I am glad Kandyman suggested a meet up for Australians as I had been wondering when we could do that ;). Anyhow, good idea to think about where and I like the mid-year time too.

Oooh excellent entries everyone! It seems everyone has different ideas of rusty places :D. The dark places are intriguing! And its ok to do light places too with rusty objects too ;). Im looking fwd to seeing more entries :) keep'em coming!

Lol it seems so funny reminscing about the 90s :) I was in my young pre-teen years then teens, it feels weird looking back like this, but it is good. Makes me realise how fast the years have flown lol. I remember all the things in the 90's as Disco listed ;) and I feel old like Dave and Bt :D. I had a look at the 90's forum and its interesting to look back at all the stuff that seem so recent, but it seems recent because I went thru the 80's and being older, the 90's flew and now the 00's are going even faster!!! Soon the 10's will come and WOOSH by lol.

"A lot of rust...." there are many places that have gone rusty over the years and everywhere in the world. Use your imagination! ;) You are inspired by the beauty of the ageing building or piece of rusted object in a place.

Guidelines: Limit of colours - unlimited, not too fussed as long as it can work in the AGS editor, though the size should be kept to a maximum resolution 800x600. Matching the story above, the background could be by the sea, in the country, in the woods, in a paddock, in the city, ANYWHERE as long as it contains some form of rusty object or building that catches the eye and provides for an interesting area to explore.

Voting: Will start 23rd Feb at 00.00am and end the same day at 23.59pm on the AGS clock time at the top of the screen ;).

--- Cut and paste from previous competition posts ---
Voting categories

Idea - The underlying idea to the background. Doesn't
necessarily have to coincide perfectly with the theme of the
week, just strike you as interesting/amusing/inspiring; a place
you'd really enjoy visiting within a game.

Atmosphere - How well the image manages to evoke a certain feeling or mood.

Design - How well the elements in the image are designed,
such as landscapes, buildings, decorations, clouds, doorknobs,
etc.

Composition - How well the elements in the image work
together/are positioned in relation to each other.

Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites, i
ncluding appropriate walking distances, a good angle for
character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood
exits, etc.

Technique - How well the ideas are executed in form of
rendering.

Anyone is welcome to vote, and it would be great if all
participants could provide their own. You don't have to vote
in all categories, and if provide multiple names in a category,
then please be clear about which one is your pick.

--- end cut and paste ---
The trophy is below:

Good luck and enjoy! :)

Hi all!!! Wow!! My first ever win in the AGS competitions, thank you everyone for your votes, comments and ways I could improve the background for a future game - will take it on board for certain. And thank you for appreciating my background and for all the support we get for our work. Everyone did very well with their backgrounds, so all are a winner for trying. I will be thinking of a good theme for the next background competition. Ideas rolling in my head now... and possibly a trophy. Once again a big thank you to all! :)

I'm sure I would have loved them too if I had known of them back then. I'll see if I can find both the games and the emulator - thanks, Blackthorne.

And I beg to differ - they are amazing graphics by any standards. I know no one believes me because I use Photoshop and everything, but I have a soft spot for simpler graphics, and these are simply beautiful. My respect for them is even greater because I can't create them.

Hi Auriond, I agree totally with you, those old games from the 1980's Sierra era had gorgeous graphics, I used to always feel excited about coming from from school just to play one of those games and looking at the graphics made the games more exciting. I still love them today, they not only hold great memories but also there is just something about them that still draw me to them, I cant put my finger on it but I know my eyes love them :). You should have a try at playing the old Kings Quest 3 game with the old graphics, that was a beautiful game. I'd say I like Colonel's Bequest's graphics too :). Now your game Marionette is just AMAZING!! I enjoyed the demo but really cant wait to play the actual game like I have mentioned in earlier posts, this game appeals to me :). How are you going with drawing, have you been able to do any more lately? I am trying to work on a series of pieces that relate to the weather/environmental and global warming issues that are around at the moment. An exciting project, and working with mixed media. P.S. congrats on getting the music of your favourite artist, thats an achievement too :). While I can't hear music clearly being fully deaf, my best friend has been working with me to help me hear music by touch until we get my 2nd implant and new upgrade done. Very excited! :)

Here is my entry - it comes from a dream I had of a book called The Wildflowers - Into the Garden by V.C. Andrews and it is about a group of girls who are bonded by traumatic life experiences and they meet at a group therapy session and become close. In this story, one of the girls invites them all to her parents mansion. After I read this book, I had this dream where I saw the hallway of the mansion and it was very odd, I knew there was a ghost there but I could not see it, hence the dark shaped spot near the door at the end of the hallway. The door is a glass door, hence the very brigh light glow from it. The black hands are the meotorphoric prints left there by the person scared of the ghost, she was on her bottom, backing away down the hallway. I love V.C. Andrew's books, they're inspiring and I often find myself being lost in her books and visualising the scenes through the stories. This background was painted in late 2005 as a painting on a canvas but I want to be using it in one of my games down the track.
