Creamy, who replied over here, made a game with painted graphics, Bob Escapes, so he knows what problems may arise.

Play to your strengths. The painting looks good, and it looks playable, too!  ;-D If you can make an art style that's distinctly your own, then go for it!

I also very much like the thought of you delving into the Persian history for inspiration to your story. It sounds like something that would be hard for outsiders to make, and I for one would certainly be interested in seeing more games made that takes into use global settings/history/myth from outside the European/North American perspective.

This is a tough one. I've had two ideas so far.

1. You play someone infiltrating a ball for clowns. The puzzles are all dialogue-driven. I'm not sure yet what the goal is.
Perhaps finding or stopping Pennywise? Or the Joker?
Quote2. Since someone mentioned Majora's Mask, I had the idea a sort of simulation game where you run a shop selling cursed masks to people.
Sounds suitably devilish. :-D Perhaps the customers need specific curses, and you need to mix ingredients correctly in order to put on the correct hex?

The timing is horrible, but I started making a small game yesterday. I have some family trips coming up, so I don't know if I will be able to finish. in time. Working title: Masquerade at the Con. The basic idea is that the player has to guess who some mystery people are, and then help the good guys and defeat the villains afterwards. Think The Masked Singer without the singing followed by some comic con live role playing.

I spent yesterday designing the puzzles, then grabbing the graphic assets I think I'll need, making a title screen and starting designing the game room. My plan is to get that up and running and code the last part with inventory puzzles first, then go back and do the dialogues needed for guessing identities properly. We'll see how that goes.  :-D

Nice logic puzzles. I just wish a story was unveiled to reward my progress.

Spoiler
As in Selmiak's video, I got the normal ending after I drank coffee. The secluded room makes me wonder if there's a way out. Yet I haven't found anything to dig through the rubble or break the door down. By the end of the game, I only have 3 plastic eggs

Ending/eggs:
Spoiler
There isn't a way out, Reiter says. That's just a hint to make the story in the player's mind, so there is only one ending. But there are four eggs to find.

The author of Lance the Penguin also made a couple of demos that work as standalone short games:
Persephone's Diary: Secrets of the South is at http://www.mediafire.com/?567kocrya42ianj
Jimmy Goodlove: Serial Killer Fugitive is at http://www.mediafire.com/?h32y9z5pm4l3td1

These are a bit of an aquired taste, as the graphics are, to put it mildly, not the strong suit of the games. Play Lance the Penguin first and see if you want more or not. The Jimmy Goodlove game has some humour I found in a bit of poor taste, as you may expect when the protagonist is a serial killer. Note that I don't exactly recommend these games, but I think they belong in the thread for the purpose of complete AGS availability.

Congratulations, Honza! Looking forward to playing it. Will eventually play all the games you mentioned...my backlog is full these days.

I'm glad you could download it.
That's a good idea, I added second link as a mirror. Though have no idea what to do about unsafe warning, I get it too.

The unsafe warning is probably because the page has few downloads, nothing much to do about that from your end.

I played your game. It took me a couple of hours, and I liked it a lot. I got temporarily stuck early on, but was able to progress eventually and made it through to the end. I liked the humorous bits - there are a few as the story progresses. I also enjoyed the puzzles. Good job, especially for a first game!

Edit: You've marked the game on the game page as a MAGS entry. Is it? If it's meant as such, you need to post about it in the MAGS thread. (monthly ags game contest) I guess it could fit with the theme "Masquerade", and if you made it in 20 days, it should be within the contest period, as well.

I downloaded it from the first link, so you may keep that as a mirror, if you want to. My system told me it was a unsafe download, though, so that may stop some people from downloading if they don't trust it or don't know how to override the protection system.

Congratulations on the release! Will play and comment soon. :)

I was right. Making everyone look out of the window at the same time gives you the last trophy.

With this setting, time period and horror theme, Clock Tower comes to my mind.
That's his favourite game, so I guess you couldn't have given a better compliment!  ;-D

I know this one. Haven't watched it yet, but I've read the comics. I read everything by Garth Ennis I can get my hands on.

But I'm packing for a trip, so I'll let someone else answer it.  ;)

Somehow, I've missed this. Currently, there are over 100 entries, and voting is almost finished. There seems to be many good games in here! I'll be checking out Honza's and Fernewelten's games for sure, and some others look inviting, as well.  (nod)

So...you changed your mind mid-post?  ;)

No, I just think etymology is harder to get away from than naming practices. (Of course this gets into questions like "What is the native language of Asgard?" and "Where did that language come from?" that simply don't have any answers that make sense. We're not talking Tolkienesque worldbuilding here.)
They go hand in hand, given that Norse names have grammatical gender and are conjugated according to that. But I have no problem accepting that we react to different things.

The naming practice was way worse in Vikings, with surnames hundreds of years early and geographical locations. I mean, if Kattegat were a kingdom, it would be Atlantis. It grinds my gears a bit when people think this is a historical series and not fantasy. I've seen some hotshots proclaiming Thor as the smith god because of the hammer, after seeing that made up explanation in Vikings. Oh well. i prefer Thor in the movies.

I haven't read the comics, so I don't know what the solution was there, but personally, I would have preferred Thora for the name of the female Thor. As it is, I reacted less to that, because they clearly play it as a kind of title, but it's clumsy all the same. I also think it's stupid to call Valkyrie king, when she easily could have ruled with the title of queen without being any less of a character.

It doesn't mean that anything that holds true of Norse/Scandinavian culture or language applies to the people of Asgard.

More than the gender, I would question whether "Astrid" (meaning "beloved by one of the Aesir") makes sense as a name for one of the Asgardians/Aesir.

So...you changed your mind mid-post?  ;) To be fair, the meaning of the name isn't 100% clear. It could be "As" (singular of aesir) or "Ast" (love) combined with "frid" (fair, loveley, beautiful).

I'm on board with the interpretation that they are an alien race, hence the diversity in ethnicity that would make little sense to a norseman during the viking age. Idris Elba as Heimdall works out great. (Besides, as gods, they could literally change their appearance as they wanted. I like the scenes when Thor magics forth armor.)

I just saw the new Thor movie. Heimdall's son is a young boy in this movie, and he listens to rock and wants to be called Axl. And he gets admonished a bit because he's got this rough Asgardian name, before they give in and call him Axl for the rest of the movie. Thankfully. His Asgardian name was Astrid, which is a girl's name.

How on Earth is it possible to make this lousy research? One google search would tell you this, if you had not already heard of Astrid Lindgren (which I realize must be possible in other corners of the world).
