I don’t think of this game as having winners. I really like the teamwork and narrowing it down together.

I agree wholeheartedly. But the temptation to call I am a loser a winner was too great. :-D

Is the package a smart phone update, e.g. the GPS hack?
Were they at sea?
Did he send them into a storm?
#2203
Has he sent sabotaged sports equipment for social posing?
Is the package related to mountaineering/climbing?
Is the package related to air sports?
#2204
Did both Gavin and the wife die the same way?
Did he kill them both?
Did someone else kill them?
Did they die at home?
Are Social Networks (like Instagram) relevant for the murder?

Was great fun !!!
But I only scrounged it,
most work was done by the other participants
Hope there is more to come,
I guess we all need somerhing to cheer us up
in these bad Coronatimes :-(
Thanks a lot for the riddle !!!

Do you want to host the next round, or pass it to someone else?

Okay, I'll count the case as solved. It was a joint effort, with a major breakthrough by dayowlron, but because I like the sound of it:

I am a loser is the winner!  :-D

Here's the plot as I envisioned it:
Spoiler
Anna woke in the morning, having overslept. She hurried into the kitchen to put on the coffee/tea before hitting the shower. She turned on the tap, but there was no water. She tore the letter from the fridge, squinting to read it, as she hadn't gotten around to her contact lenses yet. "Due to planned maintenance, the water supply will be temporarily closed until (...)" Oh no! She needed to wake up and craved her morning coffee/tea! What the heck, Fred won't mind, she thought, as she scooped up some water from Freddy Fish's bowl, pouring it into her trusted Mocca Master/Coffee Maker/Electric Tea Kettle. Without her contacts, she didn't notice that Fred was also in the scooped water. Anna ran to the bathroom and put on her contacts. No shower today then, but there probably wasn't time for it anyway. She hurried into the kitchen, leaving the door open behind her, ate a quick breakfast in the kitchen and went to work. Didn't the coffee/tea taste funny? That would be the last time she borrowed water from the fish bowl, that's for sure! Pressed for time, she didn't bother to clear the table or close the doors in the apartment. She also forgot to close the tap, which will start running water once the pipes are opened again.

Unfortunately, when she returns home and starts tidying and cleaning, she will also dicover poor Fred. Did he die of the heat (probably) or from the lack of water (probably not)? Anna won't want to think about it.
[close]

Admittedly, there are flaws in Anna's logic, and I'm not so sure about how these kitchen appliances work that I can be 100% sure of the cause of death. But you guys solved it, and I hope you had a good time pondering. Feedback as to how to improve the setup are welcome.

Did Anna pour the water from Fred‘s
bowl into a pot to make coffee or tea or
prepare food and Fred accidentally got into
the pot because he was so small and Anna
believed he still was in the bowl ?

This is practically the correct answer, except that it wasn't a pot.
#2208
You made the giant leap required! Now the case can be solved.

Not relevant to the case:
Is "Fred" a popular name for a  fish? You got me there. (laugh)
Was Fred's home (bowl, aquarium, whatsoever) located near the sink ?
But let's say it's in the kitchen somewhere.

Case #60
We're in the home of Anna and Fred. There is a dead body in the kitchen. The breakfast is still on the table. The water is running from the tap in the kitchen sink. The doors in the apartment are left open, except the front door. There's a official-looking letter on the fridge door.

What has happened? Who is the killer and the victim?
[close]

Yes

Is the dead body Fred?
Is the letter on the fridge door open?
Is the letter addressed to Anna?
Is the dead body the victim?
Is Anna the killer?
Is Fred a pet?
Did Anna kill Fred accidentally?
Is Anna human ?
Is Fred recognizable in his current state?
Does the apartment allow pets?
Was the table set for 1?
Did the accident occur as Anna was making breakfast?
Was Fred inside some sort of equipment or device for preparing or preserving food/drink?
Did Anna read the letter?
Is (was)  Fred a fish ?
When the accident occurred, did Anna know or believe that Fred was in the apartment?
Did the water company send the letter?
Was the water cut for some reason? (failure to pay or work on the pipes)
Was Anna in the apartment when Fred died?
Did the water come on and start flowing because Anna hadn’t closed the tap?
Was Fred cooked?
Was Fred cooked in a container other than its normal habitat ( bowl, aquarium )
Is Anna alive?
Was it the cooking that killed Fred? (Just to make sure)
Did Anna place Fred in this other container?
Was the container a kettle, pot, or other device/piece of cookware designed for heating liquids or holding hot liquids? (depending on your definition, perhaps. But definately yes.)

Did Anna want to cook something with water and since her water was turned off she used the aquarium not realizing Fred was in there?
Would Anna regret or feel sad about killing Fred?
Was Fred boiled in clear water?
(This could probably be debated, but the already contrived plot needs this to be yes.)

No

Is the dead body Anna?
Are Anna and Fred both human?
Is the letter addressed to Fred?
Is Fred the killer?
Apart from the dead body, is there anybody else in the apartment?
Did somebody drown?
Did something drown? (E.g. an animal)
Had the kitchen flooded?
Did the dead body die from gas inhalation?
Is the letter on the fridge an unopened notice from the gas department that services will be resumed this morning?
Did they try to turn on their gas oven burners while service was disconnected but forget to turn them off again when they didn't work?
Did the couple notice a pet keel over and die halfway through breakfast (preparation?) and evacuated through the back door?
Was there any blood at the scene?
Did the letter on the fridge contain bad news?
Did Anna kill Fred deliberately?
It's Fred's and Anna's home , is it also someone else's home ?
Is Anna at the scene now?
Is the letter from the landlord regarding the no-pet policy?
Did Anna try hiding Fred somewhere?
Is Fred a dog?
Is Fred a cat?
Was Anna trying to give Fred a bath in the sink?
Did Fred die from something he ate?
If Anna had read the letter beforehand, would the accident have occurred? (Probably not)
Did the letter concern Fred?
Was Fred inside the fridge?
Is Fred an Hamster?
Is Fred a bird?
Did Anna try to save the pet by washing/weating him?
Was Fred inside the Micro-Wave?
Was Fred inside the Oven?
I'm guessing Fred is a bird and that is why Anna keeps all the doors inside the house open so he can fly around safely?
Did Fred fly in and land in a cooking pot or pan?
Was the water contaminated?
Did she accidentally broke Fred's bowl?
Was she trying to fill the sink with water to save Fred?
Was Fred in the sink before he died ?
Did he jump out of the sink ?
Was there saltwater in the sink ?
Was there fresh water in the sink ? (Except that the tap is running. But the plug is not in, so it's not filling up)
Was Fred's primary home (e.g. Aquarium) damaged ?
Did Anna leave home to get help (e.g. get water from a neighbour ) ?
Had Anna left Fred in his (full) bowl under the tap, which was open but not producing water because of the works?
Did Fred essentially get flushed out of his own bowl?
Did Fred also get flushed out of the sink?
Did Fred's container overflow?
Does Anna know that she killed Fred?
Are the doors open to air out the kitchen?
Did Fred die from lack of water?   (Probably not.)
Did the water come back on unexpectedly?   (Not really.)
Was it hot water coming from the tap ?
Was Fred a red herring ?  :-)
Oh Jesus. That poor fish.(Nah. His name was Fred.)
Assuming the water was cut off, was the electricity cut off as well ?
Had Fred been in the container for more than, say, an hour when he was killed?
Was Anna in the process of cleaning Fred's aquarium?
Did Anna left Fred "sun bathing"?
Does the type of Fred's fish species play a role ?  (Except for size)

Was already hot liquid added to Fred's container?
Was Fred's container heated from outside (e.g. on a stove)?
Is Fred bigger than 3 cm in length?
(He's small, is what you need to know)

Ambigious (where I think saying straight yes or no will be misleading)

Did Anna remove Fred from its container believing it was something else ?
Did Anna accidentally pored boiling water onto Fred?

Did Anna leave to go pay the water bill and was gone when the water came back on?
(You are asking two things in the same question.)

#2209

I think The Birds still hold up as a horror film without getting ridiculous. I rewatch it on occasion. I also liked Rope a lot, but it's not really a movie I feel like revisiting. Unfortunately, Psycho was spoiled for me before I got to see it. I still wonder how I would react if the story was unknown to me. I quite liked the tv series Bates Motel and how it alluded to the known story without setting it in stone.

Not relevant to the case: Were there really 59 cases before this?

I guess so, because Snarky named his #59.

You took good steps right away, so I think you'll work this one out in no time. I can divulge that I have sort of set this in a Scandinavian setting, where gas ovens are far between, but I don't really think that has much to say in the matter of working out what has happened.

Okay, I'll try to think up something. I haven't checked the earlier 58 cases you've solved, so I'll pull one out of my mind and see how it goes.
