Quote from: WeeklyJournaling on Sun 15/09/2024 16:25:17Yeah I feel like the Bass template worked well this time because the character doesn't have any items gained in the story.
This sounds like a misunderstanding. BASS handles inventory items well. The standard setup is that right mouse button looks at something, and left button walks, interacts or talks, depending on what you click on. When moving the mouse cursor to the top of the screen, the inventory window pops up, and the player may examine the items using right button (look at) or choose an item with left click. The active item is used with another left click, or discarded with the right button.

I played this. The change to the BASS template makes the controls easier, though there aren't many choices to make in this episode.

So...no sign of the main character, Iancu, in this one. There is a scene with his uncle, and the playable characters in this chapter is a boy called Edward (Iancu's brother?) and his nanny. Of course, they all meet trouble. The series has the feel of a drama pulp novel, and the experience is that of reading an illustrated story. You won't get stuck in this game!

Playtime: 5-10 minutes.

Quote from: Volcan on Fri 13/09/2024 20:57:13Do we need to play as an alien or any character meets aliens?
Both interpretations should be fine. Even other uses of the word are acceptable, like "illegal aliens" or "being alienated".  :)

Hi, @RuddyNinja and @Totem ! We're glad to have you. This is a friendly and very social site, so browse around and see what discussions are up, play some games and tell us how you feel about them, or jump into one of out many forum competitions. And feel free to ask tech questions about AGS, too. I guess I'll need to take a look at Bud Tucker or Clothesline now.  ;)

The Rumpus Room / Re: What grinds my gears!

I think i now need to write a dialogue for a game where two people discuss music.  :-D It can work, and I've discussed music with unknown people lots of times. Though it helps if one of you are wearing a band t-shirt, so you know where to start.

An advantage that comes with discussing music instead of movies or books, is that you seldom run into spoiler territory. A drawback may be a lack of vocabulary, unless you're a musician or really into it.

Well yeah, I'm talking about Tolkien here. And his ages are definitely bounded by specific, momentous events (or in one case, one of two events). These ages form the basis for the major calendars in his world, so they are pinpointed with some accuracy.
I believe the Ages are supposed to be made up by in-world historians, which may or may not account for the seemingly random choosing of which event marks a significant change. Got your point, though.

Quote from: Snarky on Thu 05/09/2024 17:49:33What grinds my gears is that Tolkien's ages of the world make no sense.
It looks like you think of the defining moment of an age as an event that ends it or starts a new one. And perhaps in fiction it is, while in history most such ages are processes without clear beginnings and endings. Stone Age, Ice Ages, Middle Ages are examples of this. We may point to significant events, but defining an age is the historian's business, writing from a vantage point much later on. I think the birth of Christ should be an example of trying to define an event as worthy to start a new age, while it can easily be argued that the growth of Christianity was a long process. (And they got the start point wrong, too.)

I'm not saying that revolutionary events may happen that changes everything in an instant, but most of the time, change is process. And it doesn't happen at the same time all places either.

I agree that it would be nice if Ages could have easy bullet point starts and stops, though. Except that it would make for interesting times, which are best in books and movies.

QuoteInterview Gone Wrong was made for the Anomalous Entity Game Jam.
It's a short game, made in the Adventure Game Studio
I played it. Nice work! I liked the artwork. Somehow, I

You get the message across with just a few drawn lines.  The story has a few WTF moments, and I liked that, even though you use known tropes to shape your tale.

There are a few minor inconsistencies, like getting a message/description that should no longer be valid, or being able to pick up items multiple times, but nothing gamebreaking, and it's not unexpected for a jam game on a strict time table either.

I hope it's the first of many. :)

QuoteA short (approx. ~950 words) and vaguely spooky visual novel
The rotating camera made me think to Zork Nemesis

This time, Falsely has made a visual novel that has us walking around, trying to find our way in a mysterious abandoned floor in an office building. Creepy! (Also, some cool programming, if you read the devlog.)

Very funny short visual novel. I can't give away the main gimmick without spoiling the game.

Okay! Played the correct game this time. The main character is nicely drawn and the talking animation is cool. I liked his various poses when reacting to things in the trailer. The writing is witty, although the story is very short. I also liked the comic panel presentation.

Gamewise this is straightforward: find the stuff in the room. There are some bugs here that made me finish the game early, and I had to retry three or four times before I

Hey, you are churning out a trilogy faster than some of us makes a MAGS entry.  :-D Hope I manage to play the second one before this one is out. I get some Rincewind vibes when seeing Brownie in red wizard garb.

You could claim all turns are made in tunnels.  :-D Don't worry too much about it. It's already pretty good!
#297
Very cool! Is it possible to make turns, uphill/downhill as well? It already looks impressive.

One of the game modes sounds a bit like a "slow tv" hit from Norway, filming out the window as the train drives across the country. ("Bergensbanen minutt for minutt", if someone wants to google it.)

Nice! Congratulations on the release, and don't forget to add it to the database.  (nod)

I'll be giving it a go shortly.

EDIT: Game added!  :)

You need to add some more things to this, like code for actually opening the door, but one error I can spot right away, is that you need to use double equals when checking a variable:

Code: ags
if (hDoor1.Enabled == false)

So: single equals sign when setting or changing the variable's value, double equals when comparing.

From the online scripting tutorial:

QuoteChecking variables

Obviously we need a way to find out what value our variable contains, otherwise it's useless. We do this using conditional statements, called if statements. An if statement looks like this:
Code: ags
  if (myCounter == 5)
   {
     myCounter = 0;
   }

what this means is that if myCounter contains the value 5, then the script inside the { } brackets will be run (which in this case changes the value of myCounter to zero).
If myCounter does not equal 5, the script inside the brackets is not run and execution carries on from after the } .
