If the text could be made to stay onscreen for longer/until clicked away, this would also make it easier to play games in foreign languages. Most read slower in languages they don't know well. If you're playing with a google translate app, your phone or tablet need a few seconds before being able to translate the text it views on your computer screen.

I guess the same tech could be used to read the writing from the screen out loud.

Ah, yes! Now I remember where I got the sandwich!
Spoiler
It's in the shop in Sheffield. (Our world, after going through the portal.) Pretty sure that was it.

Schmellsville - I don't remember if there was something there or not. I did the dialogue, and that can be done in different ways.

Congratulations, Creamy! Nice one!  (nod)

Quote from: splat44 on Mon 22/07/2024 05:33:30Totall appreciate your help. I completed first chapter but 2nd on is a bit tricky

I have followings not sure how to use them:
Spoiler
Animagical spell, 2 nails, fishing net (got mouse) and 1x healing experience after giving 43 coin
[close]
Read this first.
Spoiler
Have you been back to the city you start in and found a new location there?
[close]
Where?
Spoiler
In the ally behind the woman selling energy drinks.
[close]
I've found the location, but the machine won't work.
Spoiler
You can fix it with something in your inventory.
[close]
Full puzzle solution:
Spoiler
Enter the window. Examine the machine and the missing parts. Use the nails to complete the circuits. Turn the knobs until the machine spits out a floppy disk.

QuoteArea which I not sure:
Spoiler
1) Treasure chest after dealing bolder, there a note to return W.C.P)

2) While at that wizard castle (he mentioned some spellbook being inside some boat or ship)

3) Clue man asking for sandwhich
4) How to enter light house
5) Getting some document to enter city where armour guard is
[close]
1)
Spoiler
Go back to the boozer/pub and ask for the guy mentioned in the note.
[close]
Spoiler
The barmaid will say there is something of his in the forgotten goods counter. You can get it by bribing her. NOTE: There is a bug in the game. I had these dialogue options disappear on me and had to go back to an earlier save. Make several saves and save often!
[close]
What is this item?
Spoiler
The key to the treasure chest.
[close]

2)
Spoiler
This is the treasure chest. I assume the pirates brought it or stole it. Getting this is the goal for act 2.
[close]

3)
Spoiler
I'm not sure if I recall this correctly, but I think you need to use the healing experience, if that is the note written in a different language.
[close]
Where can I use it?
Spoiler
Again, not totally sure, but I think it is in the alley with the matrix-like wall. You will get the sandwich as a prize, IIRC.
[close]
If this is not correct, don't worry too much. The Clue Man is optional and not essential for completing the game.

EDIT: I was remembering this wrong. Thanks for correcting and not misleading potential readers in the future.

4)
Spoiler
I think there are multiple solutions to this. I used the item retrieved from the first city.
[close]
What did you do?
Spoiler
I sold the floppy, then used the coins elsewhere.
[close]

5)
Spoiler
You need to open the treasure chest first. You will get your pass at the end of act 2.

I've tried using mouse on it but I always get message "not getting hang of it

You don't need this before in the third act. You are using it correctly, it's just not the right time yet.

Strange...it worked fine for me.

@FortressCaulfield
I played the first segment yesterday, the museum part. And it does certainly not look like the dingo's kidneys!  ;-D In fact, the graphics and animation look nice, but more importantly, it's funny and playable. I now understand what you meant by not using Roger Wilco directly, too. I think you're free to keep doing what you're doing.

On the title screen, I'd disable the top bar (and remove the "hotspot1") to avoid it being possible to check my inventory and examine items before the game has started. And the save/restore/quit guis need resizing, but I guess you already know that.

Please also add this short game to the database!  (nod)

Seems pretty quiet :) and I wasn't planning on entering but can I give it a shot? Maybe the subject is too broad.

I can't promise anything though.
Unlike some of the other contests, there is no rule here against entering even if you are the one who came up with the premise. So please do!  ;)

I'm sorry. But this is so silly, so funny...and so well performed. I need my daily dose.

Slapstick Approach by Creamy:
Spoiler
The solution comes off as quite logical. I assume the player character will drop a hint about why getting the cat is so important (because the battery is known to the character, but not to the player). I like that both the cat and the maid become characters, and the use of the maid's battery was cool and unexpected. There's also good opportunities for humour here, especially on behalf of the poor maid. Escaping at snail pace had me laughing. I'd feel quite satisfied if I had solved this - the only thing would be that the other options on the panel didn't do anything. Also, my cat doesn't eat biscuits. (Then again, dunking biscuits in milk is also foreign to me.)

The Cooking and Cleaning Approach by Rootbound:
Spoiler
This one works well as a short story, but will it work as a game? There will need to be some hand-holding for the player to discover how to make glue and to make the mind leap that they could be sealed in sausages. (Couldn't we simply empty the tanks of cleaning fluids and use those instead?) This could still work, if the options are limited and the player character thinks aloud or gets hints from the Galaxypedia about what to look for. Will the chemical reaction necessary to make the glue still happen in the vacuum of space? Given that we're talking about alien substances, I'll accept it. I love using the maid to build a space suit, and I'd be incredibly satisfied if I'd figured all this out myself in a game. There are lots of stuff to do with little air, so I fear it would be time limits of some sort. I normally don't like that, but Rootbound's pulled that off before, so I'll give this the benefit of the doubt. I like that you explain all aspects of the control panel, and I like the engineering and tinkering required to make and destroy stuff in order to survive. I think this would make a hard game, though, but it's hard to say from the way you wrote it. (But very nice writing at the end there!)
[close]

The solutions are quite different, one is a comedy and the other relies on invention all the way. Both could be made into satisfying games.

I finally got around to playing this. And I was entertained. The game is real fun. There are some caveats, though.

Graphics are not consistent at all. The main character even pokes fun of this, breaking the fourth wall. There are some AI backgrounds, some MS Paint work, some photos and drawings, all mixed together. So one needs to be able to see past that to enjoy the story.

The main character is a real douche. Well, there are some choices available, so I guess I made him that by solving problems that way. I'm not sure what choices are optional yet - will have to review the ending to determine that, I think. I mean, I
Spoiler
killed a guy to steal his wooden legs.
[close]
Now, one of my favourite AGS games is Rock'n'Roll Will Never Die, so I'm no stranger to playing characters who solve problems by killing off innocents and stealing their stuff. The kind of humour to play off this kind of bahaviour is pretty dark, though. Probably not for everyone.

And there are bugs. I found myself in a unwinnable state
Spoiler
The barmaid wouldn't talk about the key anymore.

and had to go back to an earlier save. There are a few occasions where you may redo actions that are probably meant to be available just once, giving you back items you already have spent.

My final gripe actually bothered me more than the above. Vital information is only given once, and I am supposed to grasp it all and remember it. That may be the clues from the mysterious clue man, or the instructions for what my next quest is. Especially when returning to the game the next day, it would be nice if this information was easily available without having to restore a saved game.

All negatives aside, I really had a blast playing this game. The author has a knack for telling a good story, and there is plenty of that dark humour baked into the twisted narrative. I was really happy when I made it outside the city, and the map opened up to reveal lots of new locations. "Yes! It's much bigger than I thought!"  The characters are well developed (well, set up for new gags, at least) and much of the humour is character-driven. I guess there also must be multiple solutions available, so there is some replayability as well. While there are flaws, I feel that the good outweigh the bad. Looking forward to the next games from you!

I could never crack Linda's password since the wording is so Anglo-Saxon but I admit it was pretty clever.
[close]
Ah, sorry. That's unclearly written by me. The idea was that the character knew the passwords all along, not that the player had to guess them.

I went back and replayed it, and as it turns out, my problem was

not spotting the hackit tool on top of a crate

. Without that item, the puzzles weren't available for me. Thanks for the outstretched hands of help, anyhow.  :)

I'm even more impressed now! Cool and well thought out puzzle and action sequences. I'll need a lot of medshots when the game is finished, though. I'm laughably bad at fighting.

Bugs: There seems to be a problem with the saved games. When I restored games, I experienced setbacks like having reported 2 completed repairs instead of 3, or not having the scraps with me any longer. At one point I also had no option to get my gun back from the tech guy, though I'm unsure if that had to do with a saved game or if I had used the tech machine before the tech guy had talked about it in dialogue.

EDIT: Bugs discussed in PMs, and it looks like I had an earlier version and it is already fixed.  :)

Hi! I finally got around to playing the demo, and it sucked me right in! Highly atmospheric. The music and sounds (where there were any) and the seamless animations starting from the stills are very well done.  8-) Very good job!

Does the demo have an ending? I had to put it aside for a few days in the middle of playing, and may well have overlooked or forgot something - it seemed like all I could do was pick up scrap and drive back and forth until running out of moves.

Get ready for the MAID OF HONOUR APPROACH
Spoiler
OPEN DOOR
You die. Restart.

EXAMINE EVERYTHING
The door is a no go. Only a fool would try to exit that way.
What planet are the pods escaping to? You wonder.
The photo of the cat and the multitool is funny. You pick it up and find the real multitool behind the photo. Yay! Multitool obtained.
The photo of Linda and what's her name...Obeguyuna? Clever way to hide her password.
Ah, uniforms! You grab one. Uniform obtained.
The vents aren't working. Well, you aren't staying, so that's not the immediate problem.
The panel shows that most of the stuff aren't working. Bummer!

OPEN DOOR TO MY ESCAPE POD
The door won't open. Dammit, there was an error message on the touch panel.
You type in your cat's name, which obviously is the password, but get only a message telling you to try again.

It's getting harder to breathe. You better do something about those vents.

EXAMINE VENTS
They are too high for you to reach, but they look dirty.

LOOK UP ALIEN LANGUAGES TRANSLATION ON GALAXYPEDIA
IDENTIFY « ጸᛗᡇΘஇᐆ»
TRANSLATE
Minigame – matching words and symbols
You discover that this will reactivate the Maid bot with factory settings.

ACTIVATE « ጸᛗᡇΘஇᐆ»
User? Password?

EXAMINE MAID BOT
She is produced by ACME Interstellar Unlimited.

LOOK UP ACME INTERSTELLAR UNLIMITED ON GALAXYPEDIA
By scanning the tables of products, you discover that the same inventor is behind Intergalactic Pong and the Maid bot.

ENTER INVENTOR'S NAME AS USER
The machine plays a somewhat familiar tune, but fails to start the Maid bot.

LOOK UP MAID BOT AND PONG ON GALAXYPEDIA
You read some trivia about Pong. There are some catchphrases shouted randomly throughout the game. And...the inventor has put himself in the high score list.
You also read about the Maid bot. And the factory settings. Oh my.

PLAY PONG
You notice the inventor's initials followed by a number on the high score table.
You notice a certain catchphrase being shouted at the same time as the familiar tune is played.

ENTER « ጸᛗᡇΘஇᐆ» AGAIN
User?
ENTER THE CORRECT CODENAME FROM THE HIGH SCORE TABLE
Password?
ENTER CATCHPHRASE («YOU BETTER PING THAT PONG!»)
The Maid bot is now activated.

USE PANEL TO MAKE THE MAID BOT CLEAN THE VENTS
Sorry, only factory settings are available. She will only clean dirt visible at 3 or above on the Wischemer-dirt scale.

USE FOOD REPLICATOR
It's not working
EXAMINE IT
There are visible screws on this thing.
USE MULTITOOL ON FOOD REPLICATOR
Minigame – fixing the food replicator using all the options on the multitool
The food replicator now works.

USE FOOD REPLICATOR
You can order various types of food, but you need to get the blueberry pie and make a mess with it before the Maid bot whirrs into action and cleans up your mess.

THROW BLUEBERRY PIE AT VENTS
It slides down, making a blue trail. The Maid bot hovers, spraying and cleaning.
It seems to have also cleaned the vents!
There is a pleasant humming from the control panel as the Climate Control is active.

USE CLIMATE CONTROL
The air is now breathable. Good thing, too. You've been holding your breath for the last fifteen minutes.

As the Maid bot makes a final sweep, you notice that it's not your escape pod outside the ship doors. It's Linda's!

ENTER PASSWORD AND LOG IN AS LINDA
Her password is easy, it's obviously XuhPlym29. Two on top of XuhPlym27. Doh!
But...it's not working. You remember that she has used face and body recognition for login along with the password. You need to look the part. (Check the picture of her.)

SWAP UNIFORMS
It's a first step. You put on one of Linda's uniforms.
EXAMINE LINDA'S BED
You find some jewelry, which you put on. Still not good enough.
USE MULTITOOL ON BATHROOM DOOR
The screws aren't visible through the dirt.
USE FOOD REPLICATOR
USE BLUEBERRY PIE ON BATHROOM DOOR
The Maid bot cleans up, and you can see what to do.
USE MULTITOOL ON BATHROOM DOOR
You enter the bathroom. Some makeup is here.
Minigame – match your appearance with Linda's from the picture.
You manage to open the door with a combination of password, clothes, makeup and jewelry.

ENTER POD
Destination?

LOOK UP PLANET ON GALAXYPEDIA
It seems the escape pods are heading for New Botswana.

SET COURSE FOR NEW BOTSWANA
Ok. Insufficient power.

USE PANEL
You deactivate everything, freeing up enough power for the escape pod to run.

You win! The escape pod is on a course to beautiful, lush New Botswana.

The Maid bot shakes her head because she is left behind here. She performs an advanced shake move on her spray can and uses it on her duster, which transforms into a space motorcycle. She guns it into open space, grabbing your space pajamas as a souvenir on the way..

Here are my thoughts this month:

Carnival of Shadows:
Spoiler
As I said in the game's own thread, I got Five Nights at Freddy's vibes from this. I like the crazyness set in a place usually there for fun. Visually appealing, especially the ghosts of children. The idea of commandeering your friends with different abilities is a good one, although it doesn't get much time to shine in such a short game. The best solution seems to be to simply let them all tag along at all times. I'd have liked it if they weren't all available or if it caused trouble if the wrong one was present. Now, to be fair, I ditched them on my own, but that was by clicking on them by mistake or trying to make them respond to something. I wanted the big one to look in the dumpster for me, but when he did nothing, I clicked on him, resulting simply in him staying put. (Nice that he acknowledges that the main character could have asked him after solving the puzzle in another manner, but still...) I found the controls a bit fiddly, and had to resort to the keyboard movement (which I'm not a fan of) to be able to switch rooms in an easy manner. Small gripes aside, I liked the game and found the ending satisfying. The strong suits are definetely atmosphere and how you build it throughout the story. Difficulty: fairly easy (but riddles can be hard for us non-native speakers).

The Zoo:
Spoiler
Nice black and white to set the Twilight Zone mood. This plays out like an escape the room game, with (somwhat) logical puzzles and enough hand-holding to make me see what's intended easily. (Well, I thought the fire should start in the fireplace, but as I always try other things first, I found the solution before trying that.) I liked the two endings, too. Good storytelling there. I think this game works better for someone familiar with the story or concept, because there could have been more backstory baked into the descriptions. However, there are limits for how much to include in a jam game on a deadline.

The Stew of Las Moras:
Spoiler
Oh, this was so brilliant. The premise is so funny it kept me laughing about it and talking to friends and family about it for days. The limited palette works well here, as well, giving the game the same sort of instant familiarity as the other games by this duo. We recognize your games at a glance now.  ;-D  The music changes, giving each character their own theme, which i felt worked very well. Subtle does it! The characters are varied and funny, and the puzzles are challenging, but fair. I guess the treks into the desert are text-only for time reasons, but the writing is good, so it doesn't matter much.

I will vote for

Not an advice at all, but this reminded me of the game All Demons Must Go to Hell by The AdventureThinkTank (Space Quest Historian and friends).

In this behind the scenes youtube video, they talk about how they made Gary, the monster that follows the player around in the labyrinth. (Well, he doesn't really, but it looks that way.) Another approach totally.
