My thoughts this month:

Not My RON by Jwalt:
Spoiler
I like the story, though I'd liked our heroes to put an end to the Dayists. The beach part was very funny. More story than game, though.

Hues of the Haunt by Kastchey:
Spoiler
Very impressive. The layout and graphics are professional and set the mood. I like how the windows all seem to immediately tell their purpose, and the game design truly sells this instantly. The intro is cool and unexpected, and the story is well written, setting the spooky mood. I have all sorts of theories about this small town now. The only real downside (apart from no sound yet) would be those inherent in the VN genre. I'm looking for triggers to the next part of the story, not really puzzles to solve.

Dead Phones by Noblonski:
Spoiler
Also very impressive. When looking at the credits, it looks like it's the work of a whole team, but really, it's the work of one guy putting all the others' assets into his own creation. And makes it look like this is what it all was created for.  :-D  Cool story, satisfying puzzles, great use of modules that push AGS somewhat, and a mighty fine soundtrack to boot. I could wish for a bit better signposting of exits - i found the bathroom by sheer coincidence.

I voted for:
Spoiler
Dead Phones. Even though the writing in Hues of the Haunt is spectacular, I like my puzzles.

Saint Chili Pepper.

This was an excellent game all around. The Maniac Mansion style graphics look very nice and are big enough to stand alone as visual clues, the music chosen is atmospheric, the writing and story is funny. And the puzzles. Oh, the puzzles! In my opinion, the puzzles are what elevates this game from a good one to a great one. Well done!

Quote from: Eon_Star on Sat 20/01/2024 10:57:35Please keep in mind that this game is a part of a tutorial and I tried to keep it as simple as possible.
Quote from: heltenjon on Fri 19/01/2024 22:14:42First of all, I think this will work fine as an example along with the youtube tutorials you have been making. (I only glanced at them. I'd prefer speech along with the visuals, but you show what you are doing, and it makes sense to release the example game.)
Yup, got it. Actually, I expected the example game to much smaller and more of a training game, so you exceeded my expectations with some proper puzzles and a decent plot for a short game. I didn't mean to sound harsh, sorry if it came out that way.

Okay, I played the game. First of all, I think this will work fine as an example along with the youtube tutorials you have been making. (I only glanced at them. I'd prefer speech along with the visuals, but you show what you are doing, and it makes sense to release the example game.)

I think the graphics are nice and functional. They look good, the character has a nice walk, and the sound effects fit. This part you do quite well.

The story writing and dialogue may need a bit work before it flows natural. Spoiler for the dialogue:
Spoiler
The woman comes off as a little mean when she says that she indeed has what you want to borrow in her pocket, but you need to get her a glass of water first, before she will give it to you. Another approach could be that she is too hot or thirsty to have energy for searching for the flashlight. Bob can suggest bringing her a glass of water to cool her down.

There is a bug to do with the wardrobe, and another one with the bottle
Spoiler
Bob is supposed to use the flashlight, but he can use any inventory item to "shine" under the wardrobe and discover the keys. Once you fill the bottle, you still have the empty bottle, as well. I didn't test if that is because you forgot to remove it from the player inventory, or if it is because Bob can pick up the bottle multiple times.

These should not be too hard to fix.

The puzzle to get the keys is in multiple steps, and I liked it. I would have preferred another handling of the drawers, though. If the player examines a drawer and gets a message that there is nothing interesting there, he won't suspect he's supposed to find stuff in the same drawer later on if there is no message that hints of it. Something like "Didn't I see some useful stuff somewhere?" goes a long way.

I like that examining the item you are building gives additional information. (I would have liked to also get that information when I try to use it before it is finished.)

Congratulations on the release!

Edit: To add a screenshot to the database page, make sure you convert the image into png format first.

Thank you, how fun that you spotted all the references I hadn't even thought of when I made the picture! :)
(laugh) I guess it tells more about my head and my references than yours. Anyway, I liked it!

Quote from: Pogwizd on Tue 16/01/2024 13:43:41Would you be willing to participate heltenjon in February? Any of the games looking interesting to you? Or have you got your own suggestions?
I don't know. I may be trying to play the AGS games of 2023 before the AGS awards, and I don't know how much free time I may get anyway. If this becomes a regular thing, I'll participate, but probably not every time.

Quote from: Pogwizd on Tue 16/01/2024 09:26:31I myself often find that after completing, say, a game I crave for an opportunity to chat about it. What I liked, disliked, or what was unclear.

I have finished some point'n'clicks playing together with someone, but a lot of things must line up for this to work. Essentially, I would say playing a point'n'click is a rather solitary activity. But still, after finishing one, it would be nice to be able to have a chat about it.

I echo your sentiments. If you start up a thread like this, people can jump on board if they like.

In a way, I treat all game threads like this. With newer AGS games, it feels really good when playing and commenting on the game while others do the same. I may even choose to play a game because of someone's comment in a thread or on the database page. If I should play an older game, I will probably read the game's thread after I've finished it to avoid unnecessary spoilers. That way, even ten year old comments are new to me and give a sense of not playing in a vacuum. Of course, replying to a ten year old comment is no use.

I also think more people read than post their own replies. Posting about your experiences with a game will hopefully be interesting for someone else playing the game, perhaps now, perhaps in years. And for most devs, feedback is gold.

Does anyone have AGS Tech Support (by Brodie Lister)?
#554
Congratulations on your release! It looks good, and I'll add it to my backlog of games to try out (just be patient, the feedback will come).

Please also add the game to our main database: https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/add/
(No new upload, you simply link to your itch page.) That will make the game a lot more visible on this site.

Great work, guys. Remember to also add your games to the main database, please.  (nod)

Hints & Tips / Re: Shai-la of the sith
Tue 02/01/2024 02:28:12
Ok, old post, but the question may still be of use to someone.

Quote from: omar35880 on Wed 27/08/2014 20:16:46I am now meeting Prince Xizor and he tries to seduce me, and Shai-la tells me that I have to raise my persuasion points. Problem is that I already maxed the levels at 31 and wouldn't go up, and the persuation level stopped at 9 because I liked to even all the stats. How Can I raise my level to continue the game?
You cannot. It's restart game time, I'm afraid.
QuoteAlsoI have another questions (more like a completionist thing):
  • what Telekinesis level do I need to  lift the sandcrawler?
I lifted it with level 10.
Quote
  • What happens if tell on the guy in Nar Shaddaa?
  • I was defeated by Darth Maul, what happens if I defeat him?
Can't say about the last ones. I defeated Maul later in the game, though. I would guess the text differs, but the plot stays the same, because it happens in a dream. @Marion

I certainly hope it's not the lack of feedback for your first game that's caused the lack of inspiration! I bought it, but it's in the queue of games to play...things take time in this trade.

This looks nice and the plot sounds interesting. Like the captain said, you don't have to figure out every technicality yourself. The community is friendly and most likely may help you figure out what you need to know.

Best of luck continuing this! It looks like something I'd enjoy.

Quote from: TheTMD on Mon 14/11/2022 19:29:20Does anyone know the game called "Question Mark"

https://www.moddb.com/games/question-mark

I think i've seen it in the AGS site or forum, well...or somewhere else  :-[ , but can't find any information
sorry if i can't be more clear, but i really don't remember anything, just some sort of dejavu about the screenshots

Thanks
T.
This game is now on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2301150/Question_Mark/

Looks like the developer has changed to Unity, though.

A somewhat different reason: I have played some games with complicated controls, like racing games or action games, and advanced to a late stage. Then for some reason I haven't had time to play the game, and end up not remembering the controls well enough for easy control. So when I go back, it's too hard, unless I start over and re-learn everything. More often than not, I'm not in the mood for that. (It's the same way with a novel where I've forgotten who the characters are.)
