I know several people who do stuff like accessing facebook by typing "Facebook" into google, and clicking the first link, so...  :=
I think I know people who start by typing google in order to find google first (effectively googling google), and then click the google link before typing facebook into google.

Brilliant game, Slasher. That actually raised my spirits, as well. And I think I found a way to filll the vibrations bar without visiting the guru, too.
Spoiler
If you select the record player multiple times before putting on a record, you get a new record of each type every time. Then you can keep putting on the correct record as many times as you have collected records before that option becomes locked.

It's been too long since my last Slasher game fix. Great to see a new one from you!

Haha exactly the same thing happened the last time I complained...I just waited for it :D
Are you saying... I should of made a different joke?!? :P
If only I had thought've that!

Creamy, that one is brilliant. You know that you now need to make a time travel game where you have to stop the target of the Anti Communicator phoning his/her friends in order to retroactively prevent the Anti Communicator murdering them.  (nod)

1) Is there a simple way to keep "say" lines on screen until the player advances them in the same way "display/displayat" works?
Go to General Settings in the project tree. Under "Dialog", find the line "Allow speech to be skipped by which events". Default should be mouse, keyboard or timer. Change it to what you prefer (excluding timer).

You'll also notice that in the same place, there are options for customizing the dialog bar, like you asked about in your second question ("Gap between dialog options").

Hints & Tips / Re: Of the Essence achievements

I went over my backups again, but no luck, I've lost the source code for good. Even as the creator I have no idea what all the achievements are or what triggers them! :D

Fun fact: I think Of the Essence was the first game in which I tested the idea of doing achievements. In every game I make I try to do something new I've never done before. Along with being my first keyboard controlled game and having the neat crater visual effect Khris helped me create, the achievements were a new thing I wanted to try doing. I think the achievements are stored in a secret save slot 999, which has a save game name of "00000000" when all achievements are locked and "11111111" when they get unlocked. The game checks and creates the save file as needed on startup and shows unlocked achievements in the menu based on that. It might actually be possible to edit the save file and hack the achievements to unlock them all and at least see what they are called.

It wasn't quite like that, but close enough, so I could successfully hack it and see what the achievements are.

The remaining five are:

That was Fast! (Finished the game really quick in hard mode.)
Not even a scratch! (Finished the game without getting wounded in hard mode.)
Barely made it! (Made it to the bunker in the nick of time.)
A-Tank! A-Tank A-Splat! (Self-explanatory. I've done this, but perhaps not in hard mode? Or maybe it needs to be my last life?)
Coward. (Deserting your post and getting executed.)

I'll try to actually earn them, as well.  ;)

I think the How did you do that achievement may have been triggered by
Spoiler
reaching the second bunker, but not entering it, triggering the cut scene from proximity to the allies from the outside.

The Unlucky achievement:
Spoiler
I actually got this by trying to do one of the things you suggested, namely staying put in the first bunker. I thought perhaps I would get something when the time run out. But I didn't see exactly what happened, as I poured juice for my son while waiting.

When I started up this game, I expected it to be something outside the point and click genre, but nope, it's an adventure game. You've managed to make puzzles out of patching up a boxer. That's simply brilliant, and good fun it was, too. The presentation is smooth and reminded me of old home systems classic boxing games, while the music made me look for a certain police officer in the audience...guess he's out researching Broken Windows instead.  ;) Congratulations on the highly original release!

Matti's MAGS entry with the theme "time", RunAway is at https://archive.org/details/mags-runaway It's a clever concept  where the player chooses the best route to run through enemy lines.

Another arcade game is Invasion of the Floating Death-Orbs, which is a surprisingly addictive shooter in limited space, with steering like Thrust with constant full pedal. It's at www.vanwijst.com/games/invasion.zip and it's by master funny scribe, the Baron. Please add it to the database, my lord!

Then there are the AGS entries from the recent Adventure Jam 2022 which are not in the database yet:
The Witch's Lullaby by Honza (overall winner!) is at https://hvavra.itch.io/the-witchs-lullaby
Ghost V by Akril15 is at https://akril15.itch.io/ghost-v
Flight from the Robots chapter 2 by Fernewelten is at https://loquimur.itch.io/flight-from-the-robots-2

There may be more. I've only scratched the surface of this jam so far.

Edit: Honza's game is in the db now.

Masquerade at the Con
I didn't know, or know much about some of the characters, which isn't a huge issue since you can just guess.
I worried that the guessing part would be too easy, as my 12-year old playtester breezed through it, but it turns out it's hard enough given that not all of the characters are well known in other countries.
QuoteI would recommend that the game be a higher resolution though, not sure if the images are being stretched but if so cropping them to the correct aspect ratio rather than stretching would make them look better.
Yeah, agreed. I thought about changing the resolution a bit into the coding, but ended up not doing it to avoid repeating the work and then having to scale up the inventory GUI. It's supposed to scale up automatically when you change resolution, but at least in BASS, it doesn't. Basically, it shows that I have little to no talent with regards to graphics, even when using stills.

Nice! "Funny" isn't the first word I expected for this game despite some slight humor because it's pretty serious overall but alright ^^
I'll amend it to "fun", then. The prologue showed great cartoonish graphics in the funny animal style. The game starts out with a glimpse into a quite horrible situation quite early on, so you have that clash between the "cute" animals and bad things going on. There also was a possibility to play a sort of pure beat-em-up game to learn the controls, which I admittedly spent the most time on (because I wanted to beat it, of course). That's a good game in its own right. I also liked the voices, even though the croc hero seemed a bit relaxed while calmly examining items while the house around him was on fire.  (laugh) If there was one thing I had problems with, it was jumping and fighting multiple opponents. (I'll admit to just hitting and not blocking enough - I'm not an expert at action games at all.)

Hints & Tips / Of the Essence achievements
Sat 13/08/2022 12:36:22
I'm playing Wham's old MAGS game Of the Essence. According to the game's wiki page, there are 8 achievements available. I've only managed three:

Tapdancer
Spoiler
By "finding" a mine field.
[close]
Unlucky
Spoiler
Probably by getting hit by shrapnel while under cover.
[close]
How did you do that!?
Spoiler
I'm not sure, but probably by progressing to the second base. I got this before finishing the game.

Have anyone managed to find more of them? Come on, join the hunt!

AGS Games in Production / Re: Moving Out

Your drawings look very nice, the colours give that feel-good vibe. The sound effects fit the actions very well, and the music sounds like an Asian-inspired tune that can loop forever in the background of say, a mah-jong game without getting on my nerves.

So the assets are in place. How good your game will be, depends on the story and puzzles. I'm looking forward to seeing more.  (nod)

The parser and questioning method seems interesting. As an old text adventure buff I look forward to trying it out. The story premise is solid, too.

Note: You may get fewer betatesters when you want them to record on video and comment live.

What does QTE stand for?
Quick Time Event.

Also, congratulations on the release! I was one of the lucky betatesters, and I totally recommend trying out this game for yourself. It's in the style of UKZ's earlier games, but longer, better, with more monsters and set in South Korea with a feel I somewhat recognize from South Korean Tv shows.

Here are my thoughts:

The Will by Lapsking:
Spoiler
What a great debut game! I admit to spending a fair amount of time stuck outside until I found a fairly hidden item. Once inside the house, the game opened up - it was much larger than I first thought. I enjoyed the puzzles and the story and didn't even think about the fountain outside.  (laugh) I realize this is a homage to Maniac Mansion style games with the nine verbs, but this is really hard to implement. While the player need to use the verbs in this game, they aren't in frequent use, so maybe a smaller verb selection would work as well?

AGS Werewolf by Kastchey:
Spoiler
Unifinished and somewhat unpolished, but I thoroughly enjoyed what was there. The game will likely appeal a lot to board game fans (like myself), while those who don't like to read rules may be deterred. The mechanics remind me of board games like Citadels, which is praise, coming from me.

Masquerade at the Con by myself: Oh, so that's how you break the object limit for a room.  ;)

I voted for
Spoiler
The Will. While both games were great fun, The Will is the most complete of them, and of course, it's an adventure game.

They are at The AGS Depository at archive.org, at least. But if that site was blocked in your country, I guess it doesn't help much.
(Searching the site with tag Chris Jones finds the different versions.)
