Well I was going to say that the economic stagnation was in fact part of a sixty-odd year plan formulated by the Germans and Japanese during WWii......

Fair doos.

I bow to your superior knowledge there.

Remember, short-term profit is not the only goal of conglomerates, Brand Inflirtration in everyday living insures the continual growth far more than putting out good product does.

Bear in mind that Western and Eastern buisness practice is generally very different. Traditionally, it's the American/European companies that focus on short-term profit whereas the Asian business model tends to project at least ten years into the future.

I can kind of see what they're doing here. The focus of Wii has been in total differentiation from the rest of the videogame market. Nintendo know that they are unable to compete with either Sony or Microsoft, so they're employing a different tactic and heading sideways. The new name is only one of the ways they are attempting to accomplish this.

They know that the Nintendo faithful will buy the machine as long as it delivers something unique, but they're courting a far broader market than that. Yes, they want to snare the non-gamers, but they also want the non-nintendo gamers. Crucially, instead of trying to steal gamers away from those machines, they want Wii to sit alongside them, hence the lower price point, lower specs and different control mechanism.

I think that Wii, as a name, is so bugfuck because they don't want a brand that can be easily grouped with Playstation or Xbox. It's seperate. It's an invented word, has no point of reference (except pish of course, potential hurdle there) so they get to define it from the ground up. It might be be a stupid move, it may be short-sighted groupthink but I'm not so sure. At any rate, you kinda have to admire their balls for trying it out.

You know, I think I could be coming round to that point of view as well.

I really didn't like the name to begin with, but it's starting to grow on me. It's totally nuts, and I can't actually tell if the name makes more sense or less sense the more I think about it. It's definitely got people talking though, and any publicity is good publicity. I think there's a definate Apple (iPod/Book/Mac) influence here, that's what it makes me think of more than anything else.

I can also say that's it's the only console of the next round that interests me, though It should be noted that I'm a total Nintendo fanboy at heart and they could probably take a dump in a jar and I'd still buy it.

I think you guys'll like this, especially the sprite artists. It's one of the most amazing animations I've seen in a while.

It's a movie done in the style of a Snes-era side-scrolling beat-em-up and it's absolutely incredible. Be warned though, it's a big download (around 113 meg) but you can torrent it instead if you like.

Edit: You can also find it on Google Video...

QuoteI'm pretty sure they stole the script for the original Matrix from someone else. Their other stuff just isn't on the same level, and even seems like a poor imitation of the original.

You should read "The Invisibles" by Grant Morrison, it's widely reported to have been on set during the making of the movie and there's a lot of very suspicious similarities between the two. It's been said you could cut all the panels of the comic out, rearrange them and more or less come up with the matrix.

Pretty much my favourite comic ever. A little flawed and difficult in places, but still a really rewarding read.

Can't say much that hasn't already been said. Pretty much in agreement with Mr. Colossal.

It's fair enough that she has ridiculously ginormous breasts. It's maybe not an accurate cross-section of the female population but I'm sure there are plenty of women in the world with chests of a comparable size and I'm quite certain it has nothing to do with intelligence or ability.

Can you really get on board with an adventure game heroine (who by definition needs to be smart and aware of her environment) when she thinks it's a good idea to walk around a grey and overcast island in a microskirt and chest-handkerchief though? What nurses do you know? Christ, I'd be in A+E every second day of that was common NHS attire.

From what I've seen so far, she is completely at odds with almost everything else in the gameworld, like an airbrushed, versacci'd model catwalking through a scummy crack-house. That's going to present a big problem with player/character identification.

I knew a man once.

A man with pie.

He always had a nice big smile.

Well done guys!

There's been some really great looking, very funny stuff here.

I've still got original boxed copies of MI1 for the ST (I remember we upgraded the ST to 1meg because we absolutely had to play it) and MI2 for the mac, both with the code wheels too. MI2's in better condition, though MI1's not what I'd call shabby.

Only problem with MI1 is that we had to get the disks replaced because of a pretty notorious bug (heap full game over, or something) that crashed the game at certain points, so instead of the MI logo printed direct on the disk I have horrible white labels with printed words.

Of course, to get them replaced we first had to use the manatee with the toaster and then give the crispy manatee skin to the shady backstreet figureskater, but that's another story...

Very nice indeed.

I'll no doubt be putting this into listening rotation for a wee while yet.

I realise I've not done this yet. Sorry.

My name is Paul, I live in Glasgow, Scotland.

Despite what it looks like from some of my posts, I never really take myself very seriously. Though you'd be hard pressed to get any of it from me in real life, sometimes when I'm writing, I like to let my mind wander and see where I end up. Don't worry, I'm well aware that I spout a lot of pish from time to time. Best course of action is to just smile and nod. I'll go away eventually. ;)

I'm working on a game, which is going a little slowly while I finish up some other projects, but should hopefully pick up soon.

I really like the AGS boards. You guys have a really good sense of community and by definition you are all creative people. It's very cool here.

I think everyoneÃ, should stop all this stuff and lookit this instead.

The bear's the obvious choice, sure. My money's on the hotdog though. They're sneaky little choking hazards.

I think I'm going to bow out of this thread now *collective sigh of relief from entire forum*. Now seems as good a time as any. Before I go though, I'd like to say one thing:

Rharpe?

Love your penis.

It is a thing of beauty.

I never said sexual pleasure was a bad thing in and of itself. If you are using the image of a person solely for your pleasure, you are denying their humanity.

Hmmmm. Are you objectfying the image or the person? Where do they seperate? I could go off on a massive tangent here, as I've been working through something related to this thought. I won't though.

I shall rephrase my previous statements to say that the object is not always a woman; however, this does not erase the fact that women are significantly more present in pornography than other creatures are.
(This is a problem having to do with the general status of women and the concept of femininity in our society, not necessarily an argument against pornography itself.)

I agree. I was going to go into this in more detail, but some aspects of it are a bit sensitive for a board with the age range this one has.

I don't think we're actually disagreeing on much, except maybe the last statement I made.

QuoteRepression is a form of obsession. Why would you go through such pain to suppress something if you didn't care about it so much?

That's kind of my point. It's a feedback loop. The more you repress something, the more obsessed you become by it. The more obsessed you are, the more you repress it. Eventually it begins to bubble and blister to the surface. First it's something you talk about in whispers. Next, you overcompensate and talk about it too much (which is where I think we are now).

QuoteI celebrate the act of creation. I don't celebrate the predominant adolescent view. Does that clarify things?

Mostly, yes. So you do think there is a place in the media for expression and celebration of sex and sexuality?

QuoteIt's a matter of deciding whether or not something is worth the risk, then, isn't it?

Again, my sentiments exactly.

QuoteThat is true. However, one also shouldn't seek bad experiences for the sake of having bad experiences.

Not at all! But neither should one shy away from things that provide the possibility of bad experiences if they also provide the possibility of good ones. Deciding if it's worth the risk again.

QuoteWell, good for you. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, then. In the meantime, though, thank you for your constructive insights. :)

No bother at all. It's a pleasure to have someone to bounce off of. :)

QuoteHuh? We're talking about sex because rharpe brought it up. I think.

Indirectly he did, with his questions. It was a repression as obsession thing. Ã, ;D

Yes, I do actually. But what I find most interesting is the fact that sex, instead of the necessity to keep the species alive (along with being beautifull, and everything else. I love making love to my wife... And lot's of other things too), it is pinted down as a sin (mostly). And is discussed as such.

I agree with you. That would be the whole Guilt issue. I'm trying to discuss around it.

I grew up with Catholic Guiltâ,,¢.

I decided it wasn't for me.
