Critics' Lounge / Re: Look my starwars art

Well, it's pretty much possible to make pieces of art like Eleazar's Star Wars picture. In fact I did a couple of concepts in Paint myself.

You have to realize that for pure pixel art it doesn't matter much what tool you work with as long as it provides enough colours (and by enough I mean that 256 are way too many for the purpose) and single pixel pencil tool.

The rest depends on skills in placing one pixel by each other. I have never used any "effect" in my pixelart.

Thus antialiasing IS possible in Paint it just takes patience and experience...

BTW Eleazar: jpg compression is an ultimate evil for pixel atr and screws pictures badly. Why don't you try png instead?

Yup, it is:

Strange considering how many friends do I have and that I spent the whole Uni time in pubs...

Hmmmm, another article form plnehry.cz, it seems like another job for me ;D

Yup, I will do it for you but give me some time, I've been pretty bussy lately.

Yes, I am well aware of this fact but this language difference applies to UK only and not to other European countries as far as I know.

Well, from what I see the picture is quite nice. Since I know something about medieval architecture (it's my great hobby in fact) I would like to add my two cents.

It all depends on which time period your game is set in.

The main mass of the building seems almost like Romanesque style, massive walls, no decorations. On the other hand the windows are definately not romanesque without rounded tops. It look like something early gothique but in that case they are too short for my taste. I'd go for a gothic style since it's what people imagine under "Medieval"  Try to make them a bit longer and it will be just fine.

The tower itself is just fine but the clock bothers me a bit. Not that tower clocks are not medieval enough as Mr. Masse said, as far as I know the first tower clock was build in 1336 and from 15. th century it was quite common. But the design looks too new. Also the two windows on sides are odd.

As for dome, it looks OK but it certainly isn't medieval and doesn't look like that. Domes like that are typical for renaissance and baroque period and this is the look that mostly preserved to our times. But original medieval church towers in Central Europe were mostly pointy.

BTW: The word "Cathedral" is derived from "Cathedra" - a throne that is the official chair of a bishop. Only cities that were seats of bishop could call the church which belonged to cathedra cathedral. Apart from cathedrals which were mostly build to show power and wealth of bishops and archbishops, there were countless small chuches (even much smaller than Isegrim's) in every city, town or village.

General Discussion / Re: 'ken Jury Duty

It's quite easy, all you have to do is to folow these simple instructions:

Step One: Commit a Crime

Step Two: Get Arrested

This should solve any problems you may have with showing up at Jury.

Well, good idea but now the character is barely visible, only because I saw the guy on your previous screens I can make out the shapes. Highlight him a bit. You can maybe use the same light outlines technique. It seems like both, your monitor's contrast and lightnes are set way too high.

Hey,the monster sprite looks very good. Can't comment on animation since i'm browsing on cellphone but the sprite is simple yet detailed and well coloured. Btw:jaz is abbreviation of my real name and doesn't stand for anything else ;-)

Hey Morgan, this is some very good stuff and can remain that way.

If you want some tips tho, read on.

Your colours are unussual, but I like it, looks almost like colour crayons and it gives the character personality.

What can be improved is shading. As it is the sprite looks a bit flat mostly because lightsource is not respected. You should choose where the light is coming from and respect it. It's mostly the hands.

I did a quick edit to show what I mean:

Also I would suggest to stick to one kind of outline. The upper body has colour outlines while the lower part has a solid black one. I didn't do anything with this in my edit but I recommend you to choose one style.

As for animations, they are neat, nothing to comment on. Maybe putting in a few more inbetween frames wouldn't hurt the anim. But it's just a nitpick.

Bubbles in tank are cool but you should make them more visible, try to use lighter shade, maybe even absolute white for bubbles highlights.

Very good job, don't hesitate and show us more.

Blackman: I command you to buy a cellphone at once!!!

James Kay: You're probably right about jungle being way too colourfull. I will see how this one will play and maybe tweak it a bit. Not too sure wheter use green hues only but maybe some desaturation with a bit of green colouring could work.

Galaga: yes, particles could be used for explosions, fire traces and other stuff. It has been done in Sky Force. Not that nifty particle effects as those seen in Particle Illusion but it looks great in action. But i'll prolly have to pixel my way through :D

http://www.midlet-review.com/index?content=review&id=274&rel=symbian#Screenshoot12

As for explosion: it's NOT the one from Pyromania this time I did it myself as I needed some small one for test purposes but after rendering, resizing and deleting some redundant frames it came out looking as Pyromania again ;D
Sample of original explosion can be seen on the game mockup.

BTW: your tips help me a lot, do you pixel professionally or are you somehow involved in real gamemaking?

OK, things are shaping up well and I got one more job. This time it's a remake (kind of) of Galaga shooter for Pocket PC and Series 60 Symbian enabled cellphones.

I just started with this one and after first day I come up with this so far:

Some enemies (there is suppossed to be 15 diferent types):

And for those who don't know Galaga some veeeery quickly done game mockup so that you can imagine what the game is about (this won't be used in final version):

plus some makeshift explosion:

It would be great to implement some particle effect to the game similar to ones that can be found here:

http://www.wondertouch.com/default.asp

but the proggy is expensive as hell and I would have to do a kickass job to justify spending $400 for Particle Illusion... but it would be nice :-)

Well, we'll see...

And some progress:

*Sigh*...
I see, there's no beer culture outside of Bavaria (alright, maybe in Ireland, but only maybe) or you wouldn't talk like that!

Hah! I will have to strongly disagree with you! Sure Bavaria can call itself beer "Wunderland" but if there is a beer country it has to be Czech Republic with highest per capita consumption of beer in the world. Craddle of all pilsner beers (Pilsner Urquell) and original Budweiser (not that American ****). On the other hand, Bavaria has wider variety of sorts. I especially like your Dunkel beers and Hefeweisens... And Octoberfest is something not to mis too ;)

As for Fosters: arghhhh.... Tastes like something that was left in pipes afer they were washed out ;D.

New level: Alien Jungle:

Background:

Game mockup:

Both pics before desaturation of BG (it's way too distracting as it is now)

What do you think?

And yes, a sketch of level 3, Alien City:

BTW: LostTraveler-the mines will be included, don't wory,as well as some bonuses.

Well, in order to help the victim of infamous "Mascara Incident" I spent a couple of minutes on making her look a bit younger:

Still there's something that bothers me on her eyes but I can't quite place my finger on it....

EDIT: Bastos was quicker...

EDIT EDIT: Now when I see the original I see it. There are no eyelids on our edits... But never mind who says it's supposed to be exactly the same chick...
#77
Yes, it is a lot OTT ;D, but it was just to show what I mean... It should be OK with lighter shading. And yes, maybe it's mostly the lips.
#78
Glad you like it, you will certainly do it better than me. I'm looking forward to it. ;)
#79
Wel, wel, some cool stuff, very good airbrush-like conversion. Only what bothers me are her eyes, she now looks ... naive?, rather that hot.

You want to give some depth to her eyes, I suppose this is still early WIP but I did a quick edit anyway to show what I mean:

Original:

Edit:

Just some shading. (Maybe she looks like whore now... :/)

Her lips could use some touch up too. But keep it up, it looks great so far, it seems like it's going to be very good picture.

BTW to display pictures directly on forum use code like this:

Huh??? Kinda strange after you announced a new game... Are you serious? And if so, for what reason are you leaving AGS?
