Great theme!  Babar and I had our unfinished mags mall game that was first person in a frame that we can maybe finish out of competition or something for this..
.. and good luck with everyone fighting with 4+ guis (remember you could cheat and bake parts into the backgrounds :D)

Oh wow, thanks for letting us know!  I knew their freegameplanet site had listed a game of ours before, but didn't know they had a channel..  It's amazing to see all the comments :D  🐬

Just a reminder that this is
THE YEAR OF MAGS!

Babar & I will attempt something again this month, hopefully on a scale that can be completed :p

Well, we got a bit too ambitious and tried to make a 17 room game set in a mall with a new fancy UI, health items and damage meter...  and we didn't finish :D

However in the spirit of THE YEAR OF MAGS, here is the big empty mall to walk around in - with a few tiny placeholder puzzles:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YSOQSw4RD1iR6IBUlAJjVv_-7ZAAVADB/view?usp=sharing

Everything is unfinished, title is placeholder, gameplay doesn't exist... If you click the button for your missing cell phone you feel pain and it hurts you.  :-D

We hopefully will get back to it, or maybe open source it for people someday :D

Stupot, please leave us out of the vote!

Edit: pulling this down for now to polish, we'll finish it eventually if you missed it!

We've been working on something and the scope definitely got out of control (my fault).  Surely that conveniently placed upcoming weekend is part of February? :D

I played all of these now and I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed them, congrats to everyone!
I think I spent like 10 hours playing these, which is crazy for MAGS.. and I got out pen and paper more than once. So much gameplay and cool ideas, and most of them enjoyable once you've figured them out!
I am fully Stockholm syndromed (or something, wikipedia says this isn't a real thing)!
Ron Gilbert was wrong! The Year of MAGS!

Just some highlights w/spoilers:

Spoiler
Bière Américaine:  This ranks as the most evil to me, but I could see this being a full length game with like a few more evil puzzles...  and people somewhere would enjoy it :D

Skrexeval's Quest: This was awesome, and I really like the interface.  Several laugh out loud moments when I realized you'd done certain things, like sneaking between the horses :D

Artifact: Very cool idea to make not getting the items the puzzle - and its cool how that bigger puzzle gets revealed after a while. It was very cool to poke around in the source files!

One Million Years Dungeon: Amazing game. Once I committed to reading the manual and mapping it out I couldn't put it down.  I thought this was super well balanced, even the 'unfair' stuff was hinted somewhere. I want to figure out how to use that module!

Quote from: Falsely on Wed 05/02/2025 04:46:45I will say I'm a bit worried about the next puzzle in particular. I was very tired when implementing it and the dialog surrounding it. Sorry in advance. P:

Spoiler
I made it!!
I'll try to be vague to not spoil others that might be tempted to look.. and I'm going to go back and delete that orb post to foil them :P

I swear I had thought about teleporting up there, but thought it was an ocean or something above me. (I'd used the knife up there and the animation from that made me think it was water coming down).

That last puzzle is great, that only took 15 minutes or so to figure out :D  I thought that might come into play, but hadn't tried to mess around with it :D
(the text in the l+f room made me think I had to take/leave certain things for a bit).

I still only have a vague idea what the Dark Servant was, or what happened, but it all worked well with some 'calm adventure and exploration' youtube music.. Love the interplay between the manual and game - I've been trying to think of a copy protection that worked as well... Please make more!

Spoiler
There's still a way to get items past the door, so I don't know if it'd be acceptable per MAGS rules for me to patch it out. But it does make the next section a bit harder.

Spoiler
This has just been fantastic, I think I'm at 3-4 hours, but enjoyed it a ton...
.. I am also stuck again and wanted to confirm this isn't a bug.

I've brought Quintus back, and he 'retired' me and sent me to open the door from the other side...
It felt like the goal here was to return to the crack and talk to him and he'd tell me what to do.. but I can't talk to him through the crack. :D

I have the key, I have the lost and found tree (I'm assuming this is the only way to pass items over right now?). I don't think I can lost and found the translation spell over?  Am I just trying to open the door on my own?  Please tell me I don't have to rearrange orbs :D

Quote from: Falsely on Sun 02/02/2025 21:24:49Bah. One of these days I'll submit a MAGS entry properly on my first attempt.

Been having a fantastic time with One Million Years Dungeon, hoping you can give me a nudge...

Spoiler
I have mapped the dungeon.
I have all the orbs.

-SNIP SNIP THE ORB SOLUTION HERE-

I'm not sure what the white thing on the floor of the Head pedestal room is...  any help appreciated :D

I've wasted like 20 minutes on this tile puzzle, its so evil.. well done! :D

Finally got to this one!
Had a blast playing this repeatedly trying to find if there were different outcomes (I'm really not sure what different paths are in here still).  Very cool lighting effects and scope for MAGS :D

Spoiler
I kind of like the timers in there, but I was left wondering a few times if it was a timer or if I had to look at everything, or do something, or what.. since it was a mix, I think?
It would be cool if things auto-advanced on timers regardless of action.

I replayed to try to get the girl, and save the brother like 4 times and gave up.. I couldn't get either of those :D   (gave back the flask, tried to not give her the blanket, skip some dialogs...  Now I'm just feeling like I'm playing this like a Larry game.)

The candle light effect was very cool too, I kept trying to see where it looped, but I couldnt...  cheers!

I just went to leave a comment on a game in the database and noticed two things:

- you can't use arrow keys or shift-arrow-key to move your cursor in the text box... or I'm not able to, but only there.   (edit, just read the above comment, guess this is known).
- Comments now have to be 10 words...  this is new?

Very cool to login and see this! congrats to all involved.

nitpicky comments:

Spoiler
- I miss the word "Games" from the menu options, "Play" seems less clear imo. "Play Games"?
- "Search" might be clearer that it's the full database if it was "All Games (Search)."
- I zoom 150% on the forums, and it used to look fine on the main site.. but it's too much now. I don't know if I can separate these in firefox somehow. (maybe this is my problem.)

Here's links to Wham's and a couple other people playing our mags games this year... The trick seems to be using the #horror tag on itch.io, and someone will make a video :D  I dont think anyone made videos for the first two games.

Spoiler
I can't seem to figure out the trick with the hand mirror and fusebox at the end(?) - I think I'm looking for a key?  I have some wire bracelet, I'm looking around the corner with the mirror... but timing or clicking anywhere doesn't seem to work... a nudge would be appreciated :D

Underground

What's down there? Caves? Labyrinths? Lava? Oceans? Burrows? Barrows? .. Mushrooms?
Draw something underground!

And for some inspiration:

(Edouard Riou, Journey to the Centre of the Earth)

Deadline: January 14th? (I'm not sure if this is supposed to stick to a month schedule..)
I think I set this up correctly... if not, let me know!

As usual the entries will be judged on:
- Concept: Is it a creative interpretation of the theme that also tells us something about the world in which it takes place.
- Playability: Does it have clear walkable areas, things to interact with, etc?
- Artistic Execution: How well was the chosen style executed? - What's the feeling of the place? - Does the image convey the wanted atmosphere?

To your pencils!
