Hello,

Does anyone know of a site that specializes in spoiler free walkthroughs? I was looking for something that would allow you to go through tiered hints that progressively move towards explicit instructions. My google-fu didn't turn up anything. I was considering building a site to do this but want to make sure one does not already exist. Also, would there be demand for it? My assumption is that there would. Better yet, would you (as a player or developer) take the time to add walkthroughs to the site?

Thanks,

I'm having a strange GUI issue. I have several buttons and a few of them do not work. The code looks the same to me so I don't understand. When I double click on the working buttons in the GUI editor it takes me to the location of it's corresponding function. However, when I double click on the broken buttons it simply takes me to the top of the script.

I created the functions for the broken button manually, rather than double clicking. Is there some process which I have to follow to "register" the new functions somewhere. It appears that I can not undo this and just double click to add them. I have triple checked the spelling on the function names and the script but just can't see what I'm doing wrong.

In the following sample code buttonLocWare and buttonLocRep do not work. The other two work flawlessly.

Code: ags

function buttonLocWare_OnClick(GUIControl *control, MouseButton button)
{
  player.ChangeRoom(4);
}

function buttonLocRep_OnClick(GUIControl *control, MouseButton button)
{
  player.ChangeRoom(5);
}

function buttonLocPub_OnClick(GUIControl *control, MouseButton button)
{
  player.ChangeRoom(6);
}

function buttonLocReg_OnClick(GUIControl *control, MouseButton button)
{
  player.ChangeRoom(7);
}

Thank you,

Male leads in stories are broken, or perhaps not broken enough.

I look to movies for a lot of inspiration, as I'm sure many here do. A large problem that I'm having is that female characters are always easy to find inspiration for. I can write a dynamic interesting female without problems. When it comes to the male though, everything falls apart.

Male leads are almost always, it seems, shaped by the world they are currently in or the love interest they have. I think characters should be shaped by the world they *have* lived in, not the current one. So, by their past. This is how people work, they adapt to a new environment and events based on past experiences.

With the male lead this seems to be not quite coming together for me.

An example: When I think male lead and go to movies to find that male lead, one mind springs to mind, Johnny Depp. A few weeks ago I watched Edward Scissorhands. I think this is a great example of my problem in a way. This character certainly doesn't seem flat. But, when I break down what makes him interesting, I can't see anything left but his environment, love interest, and the story before him. Without a doubt, I see "incompleteness" as the dynamic trait that drives the character. Somehow this doesn't seem to do it for me.

Perhaps this is a problem with me, I just like creating females more. I, personally, don't find males interesting.

So, the question is, what do you do to overcome this? How do you create male leads? Is there anyone that has the opposite problem?

Thanks for reading.

General Discussion / Moving to London
Sun 08/07/2007 02:38:20
Hello everyone.

I am giving some serious thought to relocating to London. I currently live in the U.S. and I'm just interested in doing some research right now. Kind of a Phase One.

I am also interested in hearing from anyone who has moved from their native country to another. I believe Layabout moved from Australia to the UK, so if you are reading this your opinions would mean a great deal.

Some things I am curious about:

1. Renting an apartment - cost, neighborhood, and things to be aware of, I understand that the real estate industry is a little shocking for us Americans.

2. Jobs - While my dream is not to move to London and work at McDonalds, I am willing to do just that if need be. I'm curious about low wage jobs and if one is able to survive on them in London. (keeping in mind that I am a college student and Ramen Noodles still taste good to me)

3. Citizenship - What do you know, how hard is it to get? If I knock up my girlfriend can we stay if our kid is born there?

Those are currently my primary interests. I have ordered two books and will probably be able to ask more specific questions in the future. For now I'm just looking for some general information and advice.

A note: From Americans, I'm really interested in any positive information you may be able to provide. If you have negative information please keep it to yourself. I have found an abnormal amount of anti-relocation propaganda regarding leaving our good ol' America. From our European (and hopefully Londoners) I am actually somewhat interested in hearing you complain. Mostly I'm interested in negative things you may have to say about everyday life in London. You know things like, "They only have one flavor of Ramen Noodles in the whole country!"

Thanks in advance. I will try to update this thread as I learn more and make progress. This is something I intend on doing in a couple of years. I want to be sure I know what I'm getting myself into here.

Thanks again,
-junc

I've been working on this background for a space game. I like the background but I'm having troubles with the color scheme. The final image includes a sample character.

While Sample 2 is my favorite, the color obviously doesn't mix well with the sample characters skin colors. I'm trying to keep the color pallete extremely low (shooting for 32 colors). However I'm willing to add three or so colors just for this background. How this scene is colored will determine the color scheme for the rest of the ship, which is where the main character will spend a great deal of time.

Also, any crits/advice is welcome.

I'm doing research for a sci-fi project and came across this:

Brain implants

A 24-year-old quadriplegic is now able to control a computer with his thoughts. This summer, the man was implanted with the Cyberkinetics BrainGate chip. The tiny device, containing 100 electrodes, was installed in the patient's motor cortex. Apparently, the connection is good enough that he can even play videogames and check email. From a Nature.com article:

    The BrainGate allowed the patient to control a computer or television using his mind, even when doing other things at the same time. Researchers report for example that he could control his television while talking and moving his head.

That is just amazing. Completely blew me away. I was aware of minor computer chip/human things, but not something so advanced.

Amazing.

Just thought I would share.

This thread was changed...Here's the new topic ::)

Well, how about a contest to make a AGS banner? Moderators? Could I do that?

I will change the title of this thread to see if there is any interest.

If anyone else is still interested in a banner exchange please post here too...

My original post:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
QuoteI am sure that this has been mentioned before...

I'm interested in starting up a banner exchange with AGSers. I put the FoY banner up on my site along with an "allposters.com" ad (which is supposed to pay money...yeah right...). I would also like to put up a AGS banner, I can't seem to find one. Perhaps someone would like to start a competition to make one or something. Same goes for games.

Anyway, the point of this thread is that if you want to promote your game on my site post the banner and link in this thread. If it is of good enough quality I will use it, if not I won't. Another thing, if you've never released a game, I won't be putting your banner up (sorry, but common sense should tell you why). I would also love to put up banners for completed games. I don't have a banner to "exchange" so...whatever.

These are character templates for a project I'm working on. The setting is, obviously, Ancient Rome. Mainly I want to know if I have the clothing correct. I am a bit concerned about the female matron. Something doesn't look right. I'm thinking of making the toga part colored and the tunic white...Most stola's I've seen look similiar to this, I think.

General Discussion / Socialism
Thu 27/05/2004 03:02:23
I have some pretty strong political ideas. It is hard for me to find a definition for them, but I tend to relate to the Socialist party more than any other.

Basically, I feel that every human being is entitled to food, shelter, health care, and other necessities of modern life. I feel that unemployment should NEVER exist; there is a job for every human. I feel that hunger should NEVER exist; there is surplus food for every starving human. I feel that the government should provide these things and more to EVERY human. I feel that each human should be able to cast his or her individual vote and have it count toward the final vote (popular vote). I feel that nearly every government decision should be made by popular vote (we have the technology to do this).

Is this Socialism? It is my Socialism. I look at Socialism and Socialist ideas and only find links to communism and failed ideas. This is not what I consider Socialism. Hitler and Stalin were no where NEAR Socialist in anything that they did. Communism is not even remotely related to Socialism (at least in the way that it is practiced in this century).

1. What do you think of Socialism?
2. What do you think my form of Socialism is?
3. If you live in a Socialist country or under a Socialist leader, what are your opinion of it?
4. What are your opinions of Socialism throughout history?
5. What are your opinions of Socialist leaders and countries in the world today?
6. Do you think Socialism could ever succeed in the future?

I ask these questions here because these forums provide a doorway into a worldwide opinion. I am currently working on a project that your replies may affect, so please try to keep things constructive. I would like to learn and always leave my opinions on Socialism open; I hope you will do the same (if not in life, at least in this thread).

Hey Chris, several people have reported a problem with my games. The screen flashes and the colors become all jumbled. All of my games are in 256 colors. All of my games have used Scorpiorus's CCS plug in so it may have something to do with that. I assume this may have been fixed in newer versions, but just thought I would let you know. It also occured in the Keptosh v2.0 demo, which used a more recent version. I can't really duplicate the problem and it seems to happen randomly. Sorry, not much of a bug report I'm afraid ::). Primus has reported that it happened in "Master of Sounds" as well. I have experienced this problem myself and never reported it because I assumed it was just my system. I am running WinXP (so is Primus).

So, I've been making electronic music for around 5+ years now. I've sold and bought more gear than I can remember. I am on and off on the "Hardware vs. Computer" arguement. When it comes to live shows, there is nothing like gear. That goes for the performer and the audience. It is a dying practice however. Laptops are getting cheaper and people accept them more in a music setting. I often hear the whole "as long as the music is good" arguement. I think that's total crap. We love a starving artists. To know that an artist worked for what he made is what most of us want. That, and that it's good music. That's why most people hate boybands and other corporate manufactured music acts. They didn't earn it. Honestly, a lot of those people are talented, but they didn't play in crappy bars for ten years before they hit it big. No respect from me. So, I am here to stand up for the hardware, even if it is a dying dinosaur.

<--analogue synth, bleep and blip
<--analogue drums baby
<--so hard to find a 3 channel DJ mixer for under $100 nowadays.
<--oh my god, it's so purty!!

So the pics are crap, but for some reason I really like that. ;D

Since I'm pimping myself: Go HERE to check out my latest Reason/Fruityloops/Soundforge based project. Hopefully it will be the last of its kind from me. It's been two years since I've had proper gear and three years since I've performed live. Damn, I'm itching for it...

I have begun work on my new project which will allow for jumping from Adventure style gameplay to Platformer style gameplay. I am, of course, using 2ma2's Platformerius: the Ninja Incident as a base. I have put together this small demo:

http://www.juncmodule.com/AGSfolder/ADVPLTsample.zip

It is a mostly functioning version of what I want. However I am having problems with the Platform part (imagine that ::)). I extended the length of the room from 320 to 960 and things got all funky. Mainly with the hotspots, in game they are not where they appear in the editor. Very odd, but I assume a simple scripting tweak will fix it.

I would also like to make the "star" disappear once it gets about 100 or 200 pixels away from the character. Currently it travels to the end of the screen before going away, and you can't fire again until it's gone(which is fine, I just want it to go away sooner).

My final thing to tackle, which I haven't even touched yet, is enemies. They will be pretty dumb. Just run from right to left shooting. Some will just stand and shoot. I will wait until I have basic gameplay taken care of before I try this though.

Okay, so the point of this thread:

A. Get help with these problems here.
B. Get someone to join the project and provide help by email. A co-scripter ;D.

Sorry for the "help wanted" flavored thread, but if someone doesn't join me, I still need help, as I will try to tackle these problems myself. Just so you know, I've been pounding at the misplaced hotspots and star thing for several days before posting here.

Thanks,
-junc

I was looking at my web stats and juncSource had over 700 visits last month. I really haven't touched this page since I put it up, but it is used a LOT.

Does anyone have any suggestions on easy ways to improve it, make it a better resource?

Does anyone have any material they would like to contribute?

Any advice or help is appreciated.

General Discussion / BAN DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE!
Wed 05/05/2004 02:31:20
Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Dihydrogen monoxide:

Ã,  a.. is also known as hydroxl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
Ã,  b.. contributes to the "greenhouse effect."
Ã,  c.. in its gaseous state it may cause severe burns.
Ã,  d.. contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
Ã,  e.. accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
Ã,  f.. may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
Ã,  g.. has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Contamination is reaching epidemic proportions!

Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage in the midwest, and recently California.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

Ã,  a.. as an industrial solvent and coolant.
Ã,  b.. in nuclear power plants.
Ã,  c.. in the production of styrofoam.
Ã,  d.. as a fire retardant.
Ã,  e.. in many forms of cruel animal research.
Ã,  f.. in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
Ã,  g.. as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.

Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!

The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

A note: I cannot find the full source or even the compiled version of "Tom Hanks Away". I have no freaking idea where I put it. I know I have it, it's just a case of too many backups. :p

UPDATE!: I now have a few different stages of the source! I should be able to put together a downloadable version soon.

If anyone is interested in picking up one of these as a project and continuing with it, let me know. I may be interested in picking one up on a part time basis again as a project director or something.

I recently started a topic on the mega-tokyo forums about disassembling an old game called Brataccas.

Why am I posting this all here? Well, I'm hoping that someone with knowledge of AGS and Assembly might be able to help me get my head around some concepts(at the moment ISR's and asynchronous code). If you can use AGS as a frame of reference. For example, I understand subroutines because in AGS they are called functions.

Also, if anyone could help me with this I would be VERY grateful!

this is my original post:
Quote
After teaching myself a tiny bit of German I was able to output the Assembly code of an Atari ST game called Brataccas.

Or at least I think that is what I did

There are two main files that run the program:

BRATACCA.PRG
MAIN

If my understanding of how most software works BRATACCA.PRG is the interpreter of sorts, MAIN is the resources.

My goal here is only to extract images from these files. I have no idea how to go about this.

I requested Brian's help long ago, but, he is still busy with SCI Studio (although he did offer to help when SCI VGA is released).

Basically, I am going to do as much as possible myself. I consider it a small miracle that I made it this far, and with a disassembler written in German at that (actually it was pretty easy to figure out).

Any help from anyone would be GREATLY appreciated.

You may download both the original files and the decompiled txt files here:

http://www.juncmodule.com/juncAGS/BRATACCAS.zip

You can check out the thread here: http://www.mega-tokyo.com/forum/index.php?board=6;action=display;threadid=5068;start=0;boardseen=1

I created this template for the fans of AGI graphics and haters of parsers. It is loosely based on the FoY GUI and uses Proskrito's SCUMM template.

I compiled this with the latest beta version of AGS so you won't be able to run it in anything else   :-[ sorry.

Download it HERE

If this is in the wrong forum please move it for me. I'm not really sure where things like this should go...

Critics' Lounge / C&C on new Keptosh GUI
Sat 06/12/2003 16:34:09
I remodeled the Keptosh GUI a bit. Decided to cut down on the verbs even more. Also did away with a lot of the similarities between it and the FoY GUI. On the sides I added small animations of "circuits". Unfortunately they don't animate here. Let me know if you have any ideas.

A few problems I've been having with Palettes and importing sprites.

1. When importing sprites with the remap colors to game palette option. AGS sees Black as Grey. Is this an AGS problem, or is there a way around this?

2. When I uncheck the remap colors box, and import, the transparent color thing does not seem to work at all. Is this known, a bug, a workaround?

3. This is sort of AGS unrelated...or not. Photoshop seems to flip Palettes upside down from the way AGS handles them. Could there be an option to flip the palette in AGS? At least during sprite import?

How do I make these work?

up arrow and down arrow to scan through selected items...
 //if (keycode==372)   ListBoxSetSelected(3,0,-1);
 //if (keycode==380)   ListBoxSetSelected(3,0,+1);

press enter selects the item
 //if (keycode==13)    on_mouse_click(LEFT);

I know that the "enter" one isn't even close. Is it possible to simulate a click in AGS? This seems familiar and I was thinking that you can't.

The arrow key question is stupid and I should know how to make it work...but...I'm stupid.
