Hints & Tips / Re: Keptosh I
Mon 10/05/2004 03:41:13
That's very odd.

I can only assume it's an error with AGS somehow. I have no control over anything that would cause that in a game. I have encountered a similiar problem with Keptosh, but assumed it was my crap video card.

Since Keptosh was compiled with a much older version of AGS I can only assume that it has been fixed (there is little since in reporting it to Chris unless if new versions exhibit the same behavior). My only other theory is that somehow Scorpiorus's CCS plug-in is causing it.

eh, anyway, thanks for playing!

DS, c. leks, and any other electronic musicians on these forums...

Where would I find your music?

Could you email that Scumm2D to me...junc@juncmodule.com

and the font editor if you want.

I think fire, flashlight, and the credits plug in are others I would like to add.

Plugins like TCP/IP, while a really nice concept, are a bit too complex for juncSource I think. Personally, I wouldn't know the first thing about using it or giving someone advice about how to use it. I tend to get a few emails now and again about stuff on my site, and I just like to be a little more comfortable with it. If you think of any others let me know.

Thanks!

Okay, this is what I'm looking at right now:

Placeholder section:
   Backgrounds:
      DOTT/S&M
      FOA/MI
      SCI
      AGI

   Characters:
      DOTT/S&M
      FOA/MI
      SCI
      AGI

AGS Sprites:
   Funk Guy

AGS Backgrounds:

AGS Templates:
   MI
   DOTT
   FOA
   AGI
   Simpsons

AGS Plugins:
   CCS by Scorpiorus
   Rain/Snow by Scorpiorus
   ??

Programs:
   Costume   Viewer
   Scumm Revisited
   SCI Studio
   AGI Studio

For characters under place holders I'm thinking about maybe two males and two females. For backgrounds maybe four interior and four exterior for each style.

ZOR: I will use Roger from SQ1 and then maybe 2 girls from PQ1. Also Gwydion from KQ3 as the AGI characters.

I need to ask Scorpiorus if I can put his plug-ins up on my site, and maybe get some others.

@Ginny: would you like to put together some backgrounds? Just some generic indoor and outdoor, whatever you feel like drawing.

Does anyone see any more categories that need to be added?

Thanks everyone!

The junk pile thing is a bug. It tells you to search it a little too early on I think.

Thanks for playing.

General Discussion / Re: Playstation 2 woes?
Sun 09/05/2004 06:24:27
My girlie's brother has gone through 3 Xbox's.

It has to do with cheap manufacturing. Both the XBOX and PS2 suffer from this problem. I've heard all kinds of "reasons" for it happening. In the end, it's just that it's cheap crap. Pretty much if you bought a system early on it was like Russian Roulet, some people have systems that work just fine, others died about a year after purchase. My understanding is that the current systems on the market are just fine.

My PS2 will read CD's just fine, but not DVD's. I can play any PS1 games or CD-based PS2 games (there aren't many).

I found a great solution to my problem. It's called a Nintendo Gamecube. Problem is, the games just are not there for me. Zelda, Mario, and Metroid are fine but...I need teh GTA.

So, this week I will be buying an XBOX.

I am going to look for this magical gear from the link Pesty provided. Mine may be too old for this though...I adjusted my laser via two screws attached to a circuit board. This allowed me to play at least CD games. I do not recall seeing a white gear...guess I will have to open it up.

So, C. leks, what's yer story?

Mats: You can just post them here. Or if you don't have webspace email them to me. junc@juncmodule.com. Try to keep the file size down.

Joseph: ROCK ON! That sounds great. Of course I have already downloaded it. I will do both.

Thanks,

About 90% of the time that is because you are using an older version of AGS. I'm not positive what version they were compiled on, but I would recommend downloading the latest stable version and trying that. If the problem isn't solved, let me know.

@Damien: Thanks, I will add him to juncSource in a few days.

Okay, Placeholder Backgrounds and Characters it is.

I just didn't want juncSource to be a place that encourages people to use these graphics in their games and nothing else. Placeholder is a GREAT word for it though. Thanks.

I would really love that abandoned character if you would like to donate her.

I would rather leave BASS alone, I have had contact with Revolution Games and they don't want their graphics ripped and distributed. They let me use characters from BASS for my Keptosh Remake, so I don't want to..."wrong them", because they are pretty cool.

As far as FOA, if you want to, cool, but, it's not the highest priority as I can extract them myself.

Some LSL rips would be cool though (from LSL5 and up).

Scuthbert makes the point that I am driving at. Unused sprites by AGS users. Fresh characters with styles that folks can't get from anywhere else, at least not without looking really hard. I would really like to make juncSource more about that and less about ripped art from copyrighted games. Not that I would get rid of the existing content, I would just like to expand it.

Thanks for your input so far everyone. It's a big help.

...was that english? ;D

eh, anyway, I gather that you may have Sam and Max sprites, but you will have to search for them. If you find them that would be great.

Thanks.

By chance do you have guybrush from CMI? That would be a great addition, cartoony animated character as opposed to the pixel character already up.

As far as the background goes...I had intended on doing this, but I just don't know if backgrounds would be all that useful as a resource. Maybe a generic outline of a room or something, but a fully drawn room isn't much use except to use it in it's entirety. That really isn't the point of juncSource, it's to give you templates to draw over. If you have something that you think would be useful in that sense, then yes, go ahead and post it.

thanks for the response.

I was looking at my web stats and juncSource had over 700 visits last month. I really haven't touched this page since I put it up, but it is used a LOT.

Does anyone have any suggestions on easy ways to improve it, make it a better resource?

Does anyone have any material they would like to contribute?

Any advice or help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Origins:Ã,  Ã,

In 1997, Nathan Zohner, a 14-year-old student at Eagle Rock Junior High School in Idaho Falls, based his science fair project on a report similar to the one reproduced above. Zohner's project, titled "How Gullible Are We?", involved presenting this reportÃ,  about "the dangers of dihyrogen monoxide" to fifty ninth-grade students and asking them what (if anything) should be done about the chemical. Forty-three students favored banning it, six were undecided, and only one correctly recognized that 'dihydrogen monoxide' is actually H2O - plain old water. Zohner's analysis of the results he obtained won him first prize in the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair; garnered him scads of attention from newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations, universities, and congresspeople; and prompted the usual round of outcries about how our ignorant citizenry doesn't read critically and can be easily misled. In other words, a tempest in a teapot.

Zohner's project wasn't original: spoof petitions about dihydrogen monoxide and other innocuous "dangers" have been circulating for years, and Zohner based his project on a bogus report that was already making the rounds of the Internet. Moreover, Zohner's target audience was ninth-graders, a group highly susceptible to allowing peer pressure to overwhelm critical thinking. Thrust any piece of paper at the average high school student with a suggestion about what the "correct" response to it should be, and peer pressure pretty much assures you'll get the answer you're looking for. Someone that age isn't very likely to read a friend's petition calling for the banning of whale hunting and critically evaluate the socio-economic and environmental impact of such a regulation. Instead, he's probably going to say to himself, "This issue is obviously important to my friend, and he must have some good reasons for circulating the petition, so I'll sign it."

That said, this example does aptly demonstrate the kind of fallacious reasoning that's thrust at us every day under the guise of "important information": how with a little effort, even the most innocuous of substances can be made to sound like a dangerous threat to human life. The next time you receive an ominous message such as the one warning you that sodium lauryl sulfate (a common foaming ingredient used in shampoos) causes cancer, with the "proof" being that this caustic chemical is also used to scrub garage floors, keep in mind that the very same thing could be said of another ubiquitous cleaning agent . . . dihydrogen monoxide.

Update:Ã,  Ã, In March 2004 the California municipality of Aliso Viejo (a suburb in Orange County) came within a cat's whisker of falling for this hoax after a paralegal there convinced city officials of the danger posed by this chemical. The leg-pull got so far as a vote having been scheduled for the City Council on a proposed law that would have banned the use of foam containers at city-sponsored events because (among other things) they were made with DHMO, a substance that could "threaten human health and safety."

General Discussion / BAN DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE!
Wed 05/05/2004 02:31:20
Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Dihydrogen monoxide:

Ã,  a.. is also known as hydroxl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
Ã,  b.. contributes to the "greenhouse effect."
Ã,  c.. in its gaseous state it may cause severe burns.
Ã,  d.. contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
Ã,  e.. accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
Ã,  f.. may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
Ã,  g.. has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Contamination is reaching epidemic proportions!

Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage in the midwest, and recently California.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

Ã,  a.. as an industrial solvent and coolant.
Ã,  b.. in nuclear power plants.
Ã,  c.. in the production of styrofoam.
Ã,  d.. as a fire retardant.
Ã,  e.. in many forms of cruel animal research.
Ã,  f.. in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
Ã,  g.. as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.

Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!

The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

If I'm not mistaken the release Custard was refering to may have been a test release for this idea.

Chris did use Inno Setup for it, great program.

I think he did a vote or something and determined that most AGSers preferred zip, so went back to that.

EDIT: Oh, and my thoughts on it, I liked it, but zip is just as fine.

Quotebut as far as I know, you don't physically register or pay for copyrights

Although as far as I know you are correct, perhaps as far as international copyright goes, there is a catch.

Court. You have to prove that you created the material you are trying to protect. In America, and I'm sure it would work in any other country, there is a little trick to do just that. Mail it to yourself, and keep the unopened letter. This is a way for poor writers to have a legal proof of their copyright (well, the date) and as far as I know has been used for decades.

You are however absolutely correct regarding the "once you create it you own it" theory.

The "virgin" thing I believe is a matter of trademark, not copyright. I don't believe you can copyright a word, or even phrase. I'm not too clear on what the seperations between what a slogan mark, trade mark, copyright, etc. are.
