QuoteDoom was revolutionary, but it was also fun to play.

If there were a "statement of the month" on these forums...that would be it.

I actually...oh, god...it's painful......AGREE with Vel.

You just can't judge Sierra games that way. King's Quest I WAS fun when it came out! Did you play it when it came out? I did.

Just remember hindsight is 20/20

You have the privelage of seeing constant death scenes as a bad thing. When us "old folks" played the Sierra games before LucasArts we thought it was just the only way.

I think you may find that most people that played Sierra games in the 80's are not as familiar with LucasArts games. At least I have.

Now, today, looking back and having played Monkey Island for the first time only a few months ago, I can agree...constant deaths suck. I do not enjoy playing Sierra games as much as LucasArts game now. But, that is now.

Tierra's attempt was to remake the game just the same, and they did a damn fine job. If there had been no death scenes some people would have said "yay", some would have said "boo". My guess is there would have been a lot of 80's-Sierra-playing people saying "boo". It has BECOME a feature, a "staple" of Sierra games, just like not dieing is a staple of LucasArts games.

EDIT: Oh yeah, one thing I forgot. The whole "let it go" "end nostalgia" thing doesn't really work with a community dedicated to bringing back games from ten and fifteen years ago... :P

I do think it was a good review though. I think this kind of review is good for Tierra to read. I also think it is that kind of review that led to a much better sequel.

Gaslight.

Casablanca...obviously

It's been a long time since I've seen them.

I have this thing for Ingrid Bergman.

Some Like It Hot is great...

Although not black and white I love Spartaccus, Ben-Hur, and other 60's(?) Roman era movies. I want to see Cleopatra but haven't got around to it.

I've never seen a Akira Kurosawa film but, I have heard a lot...perhaps I will have to check out the library or see what Blockbuster has in stock.

I always see great ideas like this that just never seem to happen.

This in part is the reason:
QuoteHowever, I don't have a host or mySQL to offer, so someone else would have to pick up the project and run with it.

Might I recommend something...

SSH (or someone else), collect and compile the list of credits that you are speaking about, just all of the data. Put it on one simple HTML page, just text. Maybe even put it in a Windows Help file that can be downloaded.

Then, AFTER all the real work is done, someone can write a PHP/MySQL database for it.

Sorry if I sound like I'm being a jerk, I'm not trying to be. It's just that when someone recommends something like this it tends to die away. Perhaps what I'm recommending is actually what you meant?

On the EZBoard a recommendation was made for a database of Adventure game puzzles. What a GREAT idea!! Does it exist? No. It's a lot of work.

How about changing the topic of this post and trying to get everyone to post their credits here. It might make the collecting job less of an effort.

Spoiler

-- Don't tell the doc how many beads to use

-- Tell the doc you want to go first...

-- Let him know he will "regret this"

-- Talk about an "angry god"

That's not the exact order or anything...but you get the idea. If you follow the first tip it will just cycle through the options until you get it right.

Dragonrose: You actually found that in a store!? I've never seen a Monkey Island game in the store(EFMI the exception of course, which I've never played). It's pretty hard to find that stuff on the website even. I don't think you can get to the Adventure Archive by navigating menus. I usually just follow a link from some fan site. 17 Canadian! That's like 10 bucks American  :P

Speaking of which, I have this Canadian 20 in my wallet that is evil, I can't even get my bank to take it...I think it is possessed and evil. Have you ever been to Etobicoke? I spent two days trapped there. It was kind of fun.

Why was this moved here!? It looked like someone wanted to discuss MY game... >:(

"junc" and "flow" are meant to be a portable form of electricity and data. Humans in my future have been so polluted by attempts at genetic engineering that they actually began to be born with bio-mechanical parts. These parts require a special breed of electricity. As these machines have become part of the human body they manifest a characteristic in humans, the intense desire for information. These things are fed to humans via "junc" packets and "flow".

Thanks for playing my game, I'm glad you liked it. What did you not like about the graphics? Was it just the older Sierra style or something else?

thanks again,
-junc

-PS: Moderators, could you please move this topic to Adventure Chit Chat.

I actually just finished FOA tonight. She "dies" in the same way you do if you don't follow the right dialog when you are on the platform. You are alone on the sub during the credits if you don't go get her.

Dragonrose you REALLY should play FOA, and all of the LucasArts games, they are great. I just bought The Adventure Collection and Monkey Madness, lots of games for cheap.

The Adventure Collection:
DOTT
FOA
Sam & Max
for $29.99(US) with a shiney case

Monkey Madness:
Secret of Monkey Island
LeChuck's Revenge
COMI
for $19.99(US) (I think)

great stuff

I will be there.

The sooner the basics are worked out the better.

Date?
Location?
$$ for extra activities?
$$$ for lodging?
Length of stay?

Money, as always, is tight so it may seem like it is really too early to say all of this for sure but, I really need a figure to shoot for. Doesn't have to be exact...how much did other Mitteneers spend in previous years? Not on travel, but on everyday stuff.

7 to 10 days sounds pretty good for the length of stay.

So, is Eric the official thingy and is New York State the offical place? I vote yay on both.

I requested something similiar to this a while back, it may be on the tracker, I'm not sure.

Basically just a PlaySoundEx(); type of command that allows you to pass the same parameters as PlayAmbientSound();.

Is there a character[].variable for view/frame sound hidden away somewhere? I know there isn't one in the help file. Perhaps that would be too difficult to implement.

Either way it looks like for now you may have to set up some scripting to do what you want. I don't think the frame sounds will work for what you are trying to do, at least not at the moment.

good luck,

I think BFC was pretty much a huge advert for Canada. I hate the cold, but damn that movie made me want to move to Canada.

Seriously though, I am rather biased when it comes to Michael Moore. I was born in Flint, MI and lived there until I was 21. Everything he says about Flint is ten times worse. So, maybe that makes up for his other fudged facts ::). Although, I must say it bothers me to hear that any facts he mention aren't true, but DG covered that well enough.

[rant]
America is such an ass-backwards country and most Americans have no clue about it. Our health care sitiuation is ridiculous. I haven't been to a doctor in well over five years. If I broke my leg tomorrow I'd just have to shoot myself in the head and have somebody dump me in a dumpster somewhere. I couldn't go to the hospital, I'm so far in debt already, if I went to a hospital it would financially kill me right now. And before some twit says something about free clinics, have YOU ever been to one? I'd rather shoot myself.

I could go on but, that would be redundant. America sucks and that's that. If you think I should "move to another country if you don't like here" then you know NOTHING about America. The point of democracy is to fix these types of problems. However, our democracy is corrupt and flawed and IT needs to be fixed. Then we can fix health care, homelessness, unemployment, hunger...etc.

I recieved the following error when trying to use the "walk to" mode in the template without any alterations.

(ACI version 2.57.642)

Error: run_text_script1: error -1 (Runtime error: wrong number of parameters to exported function 'unhandled_event') running function 'unhandled_event'

Same thing happened with FOA template.

The errors do not occur with 2.56d.

I'm assuming this may not be an error, it appears as if a new parameter was added for the unhandled_event function in the newest version. Either way, I figured one of you should know about this.

Okay, I'll make a game with you!!!

You do the graphics, write the script, draw the animations, and program!

I'll take care of the rest.

Email me when you're done.

:P

...seriously though, just say screw it and make a 10 or 20 room crap game. What have you already made? Anything? If not then you REALLY have to break through that barrier.

I made about a 30 room game, I drew decent backgrounds, animations (traced them all really...), and I scripted a bunch and it was lots of fun. In the end I learned that I can't write good puzzles to save my life.  ;D

Basically, the point is, I made a game that really sucked. But it felt really good and this community is so damn supportive. They lie and tell you it's a good game and stuff. So don't worry about perfection. You've been around long enough to know that nobody cares about perfection here.

Hmmm...that's funny, I just about started a topic with the same title...

Although I think your suggestion is almost exactly the same I have a suggestion which may appeal to more people...sort of:

Using #include as a way to clean up the global script.

Basically having the #include add several text files to the global script right before the game start function.

This way I could do something like #include "myfunctions.txt"

This may be the same EXACT thing this post is about...or maybe not, I don't really understand #defines and all that...so, sorry if this is redundant.

Also, a kick-butt bonus would be if you could edit and save your personal included files from the AGS Script Editor...

EDIT: Oh, yeah, if there is already a way to do this could someone tell me how ;D

Perhaps I should already know this...

I couldn't find anything about AGR files in the manual.

How do I play them back?

How old is this feature?

Sorry if there is a topic somewhere about this. I searched for it on the forum but couldn't find anything.

thanks,

There are a few tools out there that extract views from Sierra VGA Games. They can be a little tricky to use and find.

Or...you could donate $50 to Brian Provinciano and get the "Private Beta" of SCI Studio 4.

Was there something specific you wanted? If so I can rip a few for you, but not too many.

Age: 29
Gender: Male

1)   Name three characteristics of a typical adventure game
- Story/Plot: Adventure games are more of an interactive tale, versus the typical “video game”.
- Puzzles
- Characters: Well rounded and nearly always interesting.

2)   What makes it easy to identify an adventure game from any other genre? Graphics are usually at the top of the list. I do not consider any 3D rendered game to be a Adventure Game, however this is a personal opinion. Next comes the description of the game, mention of puzzles, adventure, characters, and story can easily identify the game.

3)   What makes you choose a game? (e.g. screenshots, reviews, description etc…) I would say that graphics attract me first. If it “looks” like an adventure game, I will at least look at it. 3D renderings usually cause me to put the box down. Next is demos. I rarely buy a game that I have not played in some form prior to purchase. Also, distributors/publishers/authors that I am familiar with and trust cause me to choose games.

4)   When buying a game what information would you like to see on the product or display? I always check System Requirements when buying a “new” game. With adventure games this is rarely a problem. Catchy slogans, funny one liners, pretty pictures…Shiny things are good.

5)   Name three characteristics of a typical super-hero
- in a adventure game I hope to never see a “super-hero”, the non-hero is always my favorite (Roger Wilco, Guybrush)
- Kryptonite.
- Tights.

6)   They say an image can speak 1000 words, would you buy a game just because of the images displayed on the box? What type of impact do images give to you? If it is cheap enough yes, I would risk it. But, I do consider it a risk. There are always games with good graphics and horrible playability. Same goes for box art. Good images attract the eye, they tend to at least cause me to investigate a game further.

When I right click on the brandy outside of the office the game crashes (invalid message # to display).

Great game so far by the way...

EDIT:
Hey! I was in the credits  :) Thanks!

Great game by the way. A lot of mention has been made about lack of drama in games and too much humor. Although short, it did fit the drama category.

1. WHY??? Search the forum for that question. I know someone uploaded that somewhere long ago, but, I don't remember who and how long ago. Why not use the current version? It works just fine, and has more features. Doesn't Chris have DOS versions of 2.4 or  something?

This should solve 2 & 3:

http://www.juncmodule.com/juncSource.html

4. Read the website like Evil said. It tells you anything you need to know. If you have specific questions email or post there and ask (I'm pretty sure they have a forum).

Central Ohio!? How close to Columbus are you? Maybe me you and Ionias need to have our own little Gloves thingy...

Name: Mitchell Shelton
Age: 29
Email: go to my website
Where you live: Columbus, OH -- USA
Where you could travel to: Anywhere that my truck can go.
Where you would like Mittens to be: Anywhere that my truck can go. That's not as many places as one might think. It's a rig and my plan is to get routed to the general direction of mittens. Upstate New York would be fine for me, it seems that most people are leaning toward that. Florida would be even better. Someplace too remote would be impossible for me, it needs to be near a decent sized city with at least a WalMart in it.
Can you help locate places in your area for places to stay?: Since there is a 90% chance I won't even be in my area I can't. However financial contribution is a possibility for me. In the event that someone else finds lodging and we decide to ease the cost to those coming from overseas I could probably help out by then.
