QuoteDO NOT......DO NOT.... send money if you believe it will be released.  The creator asks for money, but he's NOTHING like Chris Jones.  He will NOT contact you, answer your questions, check the forums, or give you status updates.

This makes me really sad. Brian is a really nice guy. I sent him money and he sent me a beta version of this program a few years ago. I didn't ask for or expect anything for my money though. That's not the point of donating to a person like Brian or Chris. I would give Chris money because I appreciate what he has already done for me. Not for what I would expect him to do for me in the future. My understanding is that this is the very reason Chris does not accept money. One other note, we should be nicer to Brian, whenever anyone complains about features or difficulty in SCI Studio he points them to AGS.

DCillusion, I don't mean this to be a flame at you  :-*. I don't know how your experience with Brian was. I'm just asking you to not judge so harshly. Some people don't choose to make a project like SCI Studio or AGS their life. Luckily for us Chris has, but I don't think it's fair to measure another persons effort by the god like qualities of our Chris Jones :).

QuotePersonally, I don't see the benefit of a PDF.

Thanks for all the work. The main reason I wanted this is so that I can print it. Of course while attempting to do this I become obsessed with getting it perfect :P.

Printing from HTML can be so messy, I thought this way i could know exactly what I was getting. 267 Pages will also only cost me $25.00 to print, not bad. I also went through and cleaned up the bookmarks section to match the chm file a little better:

thanks again folks!

I've been hunting for a PDF version of the new manual. I attempted to make one myself but all of the programs I found leave a watermark and generally don't work well. I attempted to just print the help file to PDF but that is very bulky. I did find this:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ags231manual.pdf

It's only around 70 pages long, all of the watermarked versions I made were 419 pages long. Has the manual grown that much?

Does anyone have a clean PDF version?

In case if no one does here is a link to the watermarked version I made:

QuoteWhat the hell is it with all this storms/tornedo's etc lately??? Global Warming?

Actually, no and yes. There aren't actually more storms, there are the same number, it's just that they are worse. Because the ocean temperature has gone up the storms build up stronger and last longer. I just learned that this quarter, interesting stuff.

I think you folks in Florida are becoming pros at this stuff. I didn't realize that you got hit so bad. I've seen news about gas shortages and minor things like that. Nothing that wouldn't work itself out in a week or so.

Something that may be realistic for the future of AGS is C#. Simply because Chris said a lot of really good things about the language in a thread a week or so ago. I've been poking around with it and the language seems to be a really good starting language. Since Chris likes it and it allows porting to other platforms I imagine it is rather likely that a C# rewrite could happen at some point. However, Allegro and the slowness of the language always pop up.

Personally, I feel that porting the editor is not necessary. There are emulators that should be able to run the editor just fine if you really want to make a game with AGS that bad.

However, as a game creator I would love to be able to create games for all OS's. I kind of feel like the plug-in system should be removed from AGS, just to increase portability. Also, the module system seems to be working well (I'm so happy that CCS has been converted to it).

It would also be great if someone would start working on a Mac port. However, this may be all pointless talk. If Apple switches over to Intel processors it may be really easy to port the Linux version to a new Mac OS. Of course that depends on how dependant the Linux version is on the Linux OS. Have any Mac programmers made any serious offers to port it?

I think something like Java would be useless to port to anyway. I'm assuming Java is brought up to suit other platforms like PalmOS, WindowsCE, and cell phones. I think this is a pretty silly idea too. AGS games can range WAY beyond the capabilities of most of those machines. Perhaps years down the road it may be practical, but right now it just seems silly to port to anything but Mac and Linux.

Just my two cents. :P

If you have any knowledge of HTML go ahead and put together a simple page.

If you don't have any knowledge of HTML give me a write up of what you want, graphics/screenshots, and maybe a quick jpg sketch of what you want.

Drop me a PM and I will send you my email address. First email me the web design stuff, then you can email me the game. I will host it for you and put up a small page at the subdomain of your choice (trisk.juncmodule.com or prodigal.juncmodule.com). Be sure you follow this process and don't just email it to me, I need to know when it is coming so it won't get deleted.

By the way, "cred" means nothing. Your perfectly worded post and intelligent request for help are what is getting you what you want  ;)

Edit: Heh, I didn't read all of the other replies. I just saw recommendations for free webhosts and didn't notice that several other people offered to host it...

You're right, I think. I read those about 10 years ago and although I don't remember them very well that does sound familiar.

Also, after thinking about it for a second I think you're right about the ghost thing. Guess I was trying to read too much into that.

I think the immortality thing was meant to be irony about Anakin. If Padme had died he could have spoken to her for his entire life. Yoda actually had the key to the secret power that the emperor was claiming that he had (and seduced Anakin with). At the same time it was the way to explain that Qui-Gon never spoke to Ben in the prequels, yet Ben speaks to Luke as everyone already mentioned. I thought that was a nice little addition to the whole Anakin leaving the Jedi and Sith seduction thing.

Reversible? I never knew that!? That's kind of...unfair.

Anyway. That is my/our plan. We want two kids, maybe just one. I really want a daughter, so if our first kid is a boy we will definately have one more. Then no more, even if the second is a boy.

After that I intend on getting snipped.

I would actually not mind doing it right now. Since I'm 30 years old I'm pretty confident in this decision. Since we still don't have kids yet and don't intend on it for a few more years I don't see that it is a decision I will regret.

My recommendation for you is the pill though. It will be easier than you think for one simple reason. You can make it part of your life there. You will be in an entirely different world with new experiences and new habits. Not to mention it may become a topic that you can discuss with friends that you make locally. Experience birth control the same way they do. Once you return to the states you could just go back on depo until you and your husband make a final decision on what to do.

Thanks for the support and encouragment Darth. I will need it. I had a lot of fun with this background so this might not be too bad. I have another 80 something backgrounds to go yet so it will be a while before I announce anything. I have decided to hold off on any announcments until I am 100% finished with graphics, since that is always the point where I give up. I'm also doing my least favorite part of graphics first, backgrounds. Then on to characters, inventory items, and GUI (I love GUI's).

Based on your advice I went back and did another small edit:

I think this brings back the contrast and brightens the screen up a lot. I liked the color of the floor in the most recent version but decided to brighten it up some. This version is much more cartoony and cheerful, which is what I want.

By the way, the game is about a space captain that bumbles his way around and ends up saving the galaxy. It is a total Star Wars, Star Trek, Space Quest rip off and doesn't pretend to hide the fact. It's a fun way to dive back into AGS and I think I will remain motivated since it's not a serious project. Keptosh was always difficult to keep rolling because I had so much emotionally invested. If it wasn't perfect I wasn't happy.

Oh, and a while back I re-did a bunch of Keptosh sprites, just so you know I haven't totally given up on the idea:

The "new" Keptosh will be in the same graphical style as this game. So, if I make it through this, then I can make it through Keptosh.

EDIT: Just wanted to post my hallway. I'm having issues with the door at the end of the hall. It looks like crap...Urgh...I'm so horrible at anything that's not flat. Good example of why I wanted the chairs to be flat. The door can't be though. Any help?

Darth, that is just funny as hell.

I am really tired of the Star Wars sucks debate. Suck or not it's Star Wars and I love it. It's sad to me that Star Wars sucks has become the new trendy thing to say. It's meant to be fun, not critiqued as some sort of freakin' art flick. It was never good in that way. Eh. I just don't get it. How can a person hate George Lucas for what he "did" to the Star Wars characters? He created them!? He gets to do what he wants with them and our opinion really doesn't matter. That's the whole point of producing the films himself, he doesn't have to listen to anyone's opinions. Do I think he could have done things differently, better, or whatever, sure. It doesn't really matter though. Episode III really tied up the series in a great way for me. I am now anxiously awaiting that 6 movie DVD set.

PS: I didn't really read the entire thread...so sorry if I repeated stuff and stuff that's already been beaten into the ground.

I just realized that I never mentioned that the game is a comical game. I like the look of Skurwy's edit too, but it's just way too dark. I did like some of the colors so I changed the colors on the monitors and floor based on some of them.

I'm concerned that it's almost looking greyscale at this point. I might lighten the floor colors up a tiny bit.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with everything now. Thanks for your help everyone.

I can't decide what to do about the chairs. While I agree with all of you on the perspective my artistic talent may limit future work with objects in the perspective. I'm not sure how the flat side view of my character will look sitting in that chair.

For now I have changed it back to a flat view. I will most likely change it back.

I like Darth's colors a lot and think that the darker greys work better on the "tech pattern". I agree that it looked bad before.

The green screens will be animated in game. I experimented with changing the color a little and with adding a shaded border to give it depth and it looked like crap.

The "shading" on the floor was actually meant to be different colored carpet but I think it looks 1000 times better in Darth's edit.

So, for right know chairs and screens are my two biggest problems. Just a note, the chairs will actually be animated in game as well. The characters sitting in them will rotate around as commands are issued and as they talk. With that in mind does anyone think the flat view is okay?

Anyway, here is my re-edit.

So, I've been "trying" to learn C++ for about 5 years now. I understand a great deal of the concepts but haven't really been able to put anything to any kind of use. I just lack an understanding of enough to really do anything with it.

After reading this thread I got a C# book from the library and downloaded SharpDevelop. I must say, I'm pretty impressed with the layout of the program and the layout of the language. It appears to be enough like C++ that what I have learned so far is not wasted. I like the idea of it being very strict syntax. I really do hope it is an easier language to learn.

I guess my biggest problem with learning to program is that I only want to do it as a hobby. I have no intrest to do it as a living. I also don't have anything practical to work on. Sure, I would love to build my own software synths, samplers, write super programs to help people make games, and even write games themselves. That is all way above what a begining programer can do. So, what the heck are you guys doing with all of this? I mean, what is your immediate goal with the language? Or are you just learning it for fun or just to learn it. Those of you that know some languages, where did you start? I've read that Tetris and pacman are good games to start with (practice with collision and AI). But what if games isn't all I really want to do? Any suggestions?

So, Chris, is your job where you are getting the exposure to C# or are you rewriting AGS in it? Sorry, been out of the loop if this is already well known.

By the way. In regards to starting programming. AGS really taught me a lot about programming. I felt like I could see results much more quickly too. I wish there was a similar environment to learn other languages in. With the recent changes to AGS I'm really excited to get back into things and learn it all over again.

I've been working on this background for a space game. I like the background but I'm having troubles with the color scheme. The final image includes a sample character.

While Sample 2 is my favorite, the color obviously doesn't mix well with the sample characters skin colors. I'm trying to keep the color pallete extremely low (shooting for 32 colors). However I'm willing to add three or so colors just for this background. How this scene is colored will determine the color scheme for the rest of the ship, which is where the main character will spend a great deal of time.

Also, any crits/advice is welcome.

That is my host. Anyone that doesn't offer free PHP and MySQL is just scamming you. That's not where their costs come from. Bandwidth and Storage are where the money is at. TotalChoice has always been amazing for me, any time I have ever had a problem it has been resolved within a few hours. An example is one Sunday I crashed my server with this PHP script. I emailed them and they had it back up and running in no time. On a Sunday, for something that was my fault. Did I mention it was about 8PM. Great host, check em' out.

DG, shut up. You could have the best site on the net if you would just update it. (has anyone actually read his blog, funny as heck).

LGM. Biggest mistake I see is that your blog and website are at two different places. The website is obviously about you, so why would you have it seperated? I'm sure you update your blog on a semi-regular basis (unlike DG) so that could bring people back. If for some illogical reason you are stuck on that blogger thing then see if they have a premium program that will allow you to PHP include the content of your posts there. I recommend setting up a SMF forum and a news topic that you treat like a blog. Check out my site: http://www.juncmodule.com
