It sounds like a song from GTA 4. Glukoza - Schweine?

Ooh, that's an ugly song. U-G-L-Y I say.

Hey - that accent...sounds like a mixture of a Ukrainian figure skater and an Italian gangster rapper to me. No offense, I can't judge that very well, I guess. Also, I beta-tested it for a while and kept on learning my lesson the hard way. It didn't feel very coherent, yet, and was sadly very demotivating. I like games that try unusual approaches on storytelling or on anything, in fact, but Stediddy still felt a bit too random.

Eventually, I felt like I only had to die in every possible way to see the clever or funny response that follows. And I am too young to die so frequently.

It sounds a bit like somebody trying to sound like Danny Elfman. I doubt it is an original song, maybe it is even a requested composition for that video?

Maybe, even if it's just for inspiration, you could have a look at this video. It shows very roughly how the backgrounds of Dirty Split, a game created with That Other Crappy Adventure Game Engine(TM) were made. Schnuffel's artwork, in turn, was heavily inspired by that of shag, http://www.shag.com/

Maybe we should knock up a short AGS game in which facts and the framework of the community are explained.

"New to AGS? Play this game before you start to find out about the engine and the community" certainly doesn't sound aggressive. Any unemployed social education workers with extensive AGS scripting knowledge around?

No, but seriously: Why not add a short and friendly text to the forums front page, to introduce the community to people who are considering to register? Like, mention all the cool things there are and then explain the conditions.

I know that some people might now argue that the AGS forums don't have to suck up to nobody and if you don't like what you see, tough luck - but this is a really friendly community, why not tell it on the front page?

There are two series using AGS which have established their own universe and also provide resources for you to download: Reality on the norm and Maniac Mansion Mania whose starter pack and website have just been translated to Spanish, by the way, so that might come in handy for you.

I was quite willing to check the Italian version out, I haven't used my Italian in years, but you know what they say: asino che ha fame mangia di ogni strame ;) - but: Megaupload has canceled my download twice for no good reason and the third time I got a time out error. Big file, big problems.

I am so glad I stuck around here long enough to gradually notice that the people who compile these pamphlets are also but mere humans. One or two spelling errors and some obscure opinions on some obscure topics later - tada - I had overcome my fear and posted something.

Is that a Robocop Kraus poster?

Wow, the one detail I forgot to mention. Yes, it is. I basically grew up with the Robocop Kraus, they played Nürnberg (which is where I come from) heavily before their big breakthrough. Also, they showed up at our conert some months ago and afterwards said they thought we did not suck completely, just a little. They are nice guys.

Oh, I misunderstood that, I'm sorry. It wasn't about posting pictures, but about choosing an avatar. And, hey, I was being the good hyena!

Hey, not so almighty there, are you? You might want to look at the link saying "How do I post images, smileys and formatting?" when creating a new topic or an answer. It will immediately become clear to you what to do and your omnipotence will be restored at once.

Hey, I found one old thread - and in 2004, it wasn't so overdue: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=15993.0

Still, high time for an update on that, I just read somebody rejoicing "new hardware, 20GB hard drive, yay!"...

Well, here is what was left out from the cup picture over at the long overdue blue cup thread.
My vintage IBM Thinkcentre with brand new Hyundai screen, some microphones, my Korg K49, supported by a Magnus sine wave organ. My chair just broke, I am sitting on plastic and metal at the moment. The quite impressive oak table was snatched from a local bank when they refurbished their offices.

The guitar sucks. The bass drum pedal does too. The massive Thorens record player is basically alright, but I stepped on the power cable and ripped it out.

The little green and red things left of my keyboard are monopoly houses and hotels. I have a lamp that looks like a church, but my girlfriend thought it was not a very good joke and ugly on top of it so I had to take it out of the living room. The leather gloves sitting on the "Washington Capitals" shirt are property of the German Railroad. In the middle of the green shelf you can spot three cardboard boxes, containing 1/6th of the total unsold CDs of my band.

There is also a copy of "The colonel's bequest" by Sierra in this shelf, sadly on 5 1/4" disks. The lock on my desk is broken and it contains 100 Euro cash at the moment, you can rob me if you like.

Wow, a really nice background out of the blue!

The only thing that bothers me a bit are the wood textures you used for the houses - they look a bit cheap, in my opinion, because they kill all perspective you have built up and - well, they look cheap.

If you changed them to simple lines, like you have drawn the leftmost building, it would work perfectly for me. There are some flaws in perspective, like the window or the door on the left building, but I'm not the one to correct them, since I don't even know how to draw a cube right.

Very nice to see you are making such a progress - if you try an indoor scene next, I'd be very interested in how it will look like, I always found indoor scenes so hard to draw that I eventually gave up and decided to never draw anything again in my whole life. Really, true story.

Hey, I really like that style of this game!

Well, here's the only blue cup in this household. I agree that it is small blue cup, not exactly a big one. And is possibly also "prussian blue". And it is also definitely not my favorite cup.

Oh yes, and it says "Charlotte".

There was this thread by Vince Twelve about superfluous GUI verbs: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=35142.0

I read through it, didn't agree with all of it, but my feeling is: Having played the demo and following your progress in the outdoor scene wip thread, I think that the graphics style of your game will be quite a homage to Monkey Island. Then, even if it is just for nostalgia's sake, why not use the old Monkey Island GUI?

If somebody comes up with a streamlined interface where interact is practically the only verb that is necessary, this can be cool, and it is most of the times, because puzzles are not artificially constructed around finding the right verbs.

But if you implement the Monkey Island 2 interface well (indicate to the via an action response player that "Use" is close but not enough, in that case), it can also be fun, and feel right.

The font looks horrible to read, though the rest looks fab...

I'll have to second that about the font - wasn't there a medieval pixel font in the SCI font pack that could suit this game?

edit: I just remembered a font that is medieval and still pretty readable at 320x200/240 resolution: http://www.fontspace.com/pheist/heinzheinrich

I liked the atmosphere the game created, most of the jazz standard midis worked very well. It is pretty text-heavy - which I normally like, but in that case it felt like excess text sometimes.

Even if the walking animation is a bit awkward and overall the graphics are quite plain - they are consistent and do their job perfectly well. The only thing that really bothered me was the one classic of design flaws that lots of people commit, especially in their first efforts: Lots of puzzles that could logically be solved with any of the inventory items, but they can't.

Spoiler
For example: The magnet in plastic coating. You could definitely pry the coating open with the scissors or the knives in the kitchen - but you can't, and there is not even a response why you can't.

Or the credit card under the bedside table. There are loads of items that could be used for the - very simple - task of retrieving the credit card from under the table, but the can't.
[close]

What makes up for that is the fact that is has been very carefully designed, with lots of detail to the characters and nice action responses. If you're in the mood for a classical sleuth story, give it a shot.

Also:  Mods, if you're up for composing, I'd absolutely love that.

Hey - now, I guess that's your official reaction to my petty try of remaking the original Larry Vales theme. Well, all the better to round up the original team. Good luck!
