The Rumpus Room / Re: I LOVE MARK LOVEGROVE
Tue 21/04/2009 20:31:30
I only just found this thread and I think I speak for everyone when I say:

Was your stranger in there for 5 days?

Was your adventure in her galaxy full of fantabulous wonderment?

When you were done, did you enter her second face?

How paranormal WAS your investigation into her case?

And honestly,

Was your string REALLY infinite?

Would kids today actually play adventure games?  Should I simply offer it as freeware?

Well I am only 15 but happen to find adventure games to be some of the best ever made. I played them since I was around 6 up to today. The only bad thing I can think to say about the old adventure games is that the genre has all but died out.

Is it a horror? Looks good by the way.

lol. Ashes-to ashes-to-ashes-to ashes-to- rabid dog?- I love- the pain!

That's one I remember from grim fandango.
#25
Thanks. Which one would you use?

For a bit of humour you could add Frankie Boyle's poem "Daffodils"

Enjoy  ;)

I've been looking for a decent programme to make sprite with. Can somebody recommend one to me?

AGS Games in Production / Re: The Wanderer

I know I'm a bit late but I've only just seen this game. First off; WOW. Those screens look fantastic. I especially like the artistic direction you are going with for the backgrounds. It makes the game look very epic. If the story's good I'd say this could be one of the most popular games here.
#29
Thanks! I'll use it.

Edit:

I made only the slightest change, the thing on the bottom right was supposed to be a lever. My fault really.

I also did the "Other" version in sepia. I know it looks bland but it's only use is to be at the start of the game. Anyway, tell me what I can do. Thanks again Kastchey, I like that shot.

Thanks! I will try and do them first though. But I really would like a hand in just cleaning them up a little if you don't mind.

What did you think towards living them up with the sepia colour and scratching shadows effect?

I think I might go for the brown-ish effect but I'm not sure I like the scratching shadows effect.

Woah. That looks WAY better than mine. Like I said it's only just a rough draft at the moment as I'm looking for someone to do backgrounds for me. And yes to everyone, the blood effects are the worst you'll ever see in a game. And YES the perspective is wrong. I never said I was good at art. Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

Also,
The black and white is pretty lifeless I thought but I can't really liven it up with anything. Also, I'm looking to make around 8 backgrounds and their "horror" look.

Edit by ProgZ:  Please don't quote entire posts, especially images.  A single image reference is okay but unnecessary since most of the threads never get long enough to be confusing.  Thanks!

Hi, just a comment first: I thought the b'n'w was the horror one, but this actually might be "creepier."

Well I can offer some non-expert advice, I'm sure there are other, more qualified, people, but:
- the perspective is off, check the lines and angles if they meet in 1 point (for example the right end of the carpet), view some of the other backgrounds in the critic
lounge and you'll see that's the most common mistake and most of  the artsy people here spot that quickly (not me though, that's why I try too read these topics as much as I can)
- that blood (if that is blood) looks a bit unnatural, I think it would make more of a puddle not just artery spatter
- doors maybe could use a frame around them
- oh and maybe the most important, and I don't know if it's because it's a work in progress, but a light source and general lighting always adds to the atmosphere of the scene
- other things might be a just your style of drawing so that's about it from me, hope it helps

First off: The reason I'm using black and white as "normal" is because the colour seems to emphasise the surroundings. I'm trying to make this a horror house trapped between two time zones (The black and white being a past version of the house) and the player being able to access both through a fairly bad reason I can't say without referencing the weak plot  ;D.

Anyway:
-I did notice the lines were off but whenever I alter them it just looks worse  ???. I will work on it though because it does look... odd.

-The puddle in the middle does look odd now I look at it. Thanks. I don't know how I didn't notice it.

- I'll add doorframes. It looks bad without them doesn't it.

- I'll try and fit in a light. I don't know why I didn't originally fit one    ::).

-I'm not good at art and never was. I don't think Microsoft paint is the best thing to use but it's the easiest.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback. I'll address those issues but at the moment I'm only using these as a "fall back". I'd really love if someone else could do backgrounds along this design instead.

Can you help me out? I was wondering if you could write some music for a short horror point and click game I was going to make. Just a short, quiet creepy theme tune for the title screen. If you can help can you PM me? Thanks.

Yeah I know but I'mjust saying that rather than complicating it with making an RPG with an adventure game studio, it would make more sense to make an RPG with an rpg studio.

I love it.

*The percussion's great. the rhythm's very catchy and steady throughout. Steady and unchanging rhythm is good because it can get a bit messy on a loop if the rhythm changes.

*It doesn't scream gypsy but it does convey the idea of nomad (the instruments being very "desert" sounding. So while it does give the image of a nomadic person, it doesn't go overboard. And ass long as you don't add tambourines, I don't think it will  ;D

* The trills help shake the music up and I think you should keep them in. They do help improve the feel of the song though.

* As for the character, it gives the idea of a sort of humourous character (The start is very cheery). It does make it seem like he's trying very hard to survive and seems to live a hard life.

All in all, great piece. Well done and good luck woth the game.

These images are for two alternate realities in a horror game I was thinking of making. I want to be able to make it so that in one reality, the rooms are black and white and look relatively normal while in the other reality, colour is restored with a "haunted" look. Do these photos look alright?

Also: I would KILL for somebody who would be willing to take up job of graphics design because, frankly, I hate this. If anyone's willing to make sprites and backgrounds I would love if you could help. I'll give you the biggest hug if you could help  ;D.

Thanks in advance.

I think someone recently updated the parser I wrote a while ago. I haven't looked at it but it may be able to help.

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=9435.0

Read the edit at the bottom and look at Laukku's parser

Thanks very much! That helped a lot. Thanks!

I might be a little late to the party on this topic but RPG maker VX (go to www.phanxgames.com) makes great looking RPGs, is very easy to use and if you don't like writing your own script, you have the choice to just use a simple Ruby script program where you just have simple "turn switch on" or "add variable" without any real script (or you could just script yourself).

I sound like a bot don't I?
