I posted this over in the BTF with no luck, and other people have had similar problems. I'll post here because it sounds like a bug and I still need assistance.

I'm trying to use the Sierra style portraits and have the option set to "SierraWithBackground", it all seems fine and dandy except it seems to randomise the font colour used i.e. running it one time all the text will be blue, running it another time it might be brown.

I really have no idea why it is doing this, when I switch over to 'SierraWithTransparent' it uses the individual character speech colour, which is what I'd like.

How can I define the colour to be used with Sierra style portraits with background?

Regards,
Maggie

P.S. I am using the current stable release of the AGS editor (v3.0).

I'm trying to create a puzzle where a laser beam is moving about the screen, but I want the laser to be moving slowly in the background so the user can solve the puzzle before the laser hits them. I've got the movement down to a 'T'. But I need the user to be able to continue playing. Here's what I got for the movement:

Code: ags

ypos = 171;
while (ypos > 134) {
  RawRestoreScreen ();
  RawDrawLine(198,22,47,ypos);
  Wait(1);
  ypos--;
}

The other thing I need is for the line to draw itself above all the other objects in the room; the line currently shows up behind the objects.

Well They've finally announced a date for the film - July 27th, 2007.

I'm guessing this is going to be an end to the whole Simpsons as it has been going very much down hill for the past few seasons and hit absolute rock bottom around Season 15.

Anyway more stuff and trailer available here

The bad news: Yes yes, you heard right! It's finished.

fixed link :)
Now for the worse news: download me (947kb) (updated version at bottom of this post)

Piratess is a game about a female pirate who's had a bad day, she's been captured and is going to be hung for pirating, you need to escape.

And the even worse news: Unfortunatly I never got round to doing exactly what I wanted with this. It was meant to be a medium to long game, but due to me losing interest on yet another project and also due to my very limited time I've had to stop working on this. Unlike my other projects that have remained in a dark corner of my hard-drive, or been lost to the ages. I have spent the past 2 or 3 days running through it fixing any bugs and spelling / grammar I came across. I sorted out the game so it has some form of an ending, if you can call it that, and released it.

The project actually started out as a test of the LEC style GUI, and I really liked how it worked so I began to make it into a game. I made up a story and began to make it, and now here we are.

This is in it's entirity and is 100% finished (woohoo, I beat m0ds to the mark of releasing something before him).

Enjoy :D

Edit:
removed pressing '.' to skip text and will now allow mouse clicks, changed the ending to please ProgZ, and added some small fixes here and there. Saved game included so you can see the new ending without replaying the whole thing

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / AGS RSS Feeds
Thu 16/02/2006 00:55:15
Just a thought but it would be nice to create some sort of AGS RSS feed or something based around the forums, where a user can select forums to be constantly updated on.

I don't know how this would work, but i would find it very usefull because I use google IG and have all my RSS feeds for various websites and comics all as my homepage, if an AGS one could be made so that I can constantly check new posts in various forums.

Would anyone else find this useful?

OK, this is the first real character that I've done on my own that I'm actually pleased with. My biggest problem with it is he looks too... normal. I would really like him to have more of an atheletic build, but can't seem to manage it, any suggestions?

He is meant to be roughly about mid twenties, handsome, strong, athletic and a bit full of himself (imagine Johnny Bravo). He is also meant to really be a super-hero yet without the spandex.

Also, I'm making this for a 320 x 200 resolution game. Is this going to be an OK size to work with or will it be too small.

Do the colours go well, does the outfit suit?

Also any general pointers on how to improve and all paintovers welcome.

100%

200%

Help me out please!

General Discussion / How safe are you?
Tue 31/01/2006 12:58:07
Just a random thought, but I have perhaps five or six different passwords that I use for various different things. Ranging from a mix of numbers and letters, to long strings of numbers. E.G for me to access the library at my university my password is 11 digits long, which is my ID card number.

Is anyone like me withg lots of passwords for everything or do you have just one or possibly two?

Also, how safe do you feel your password is? Is it something personal that only you would know or just a few random words and numbers spliced together? Also how do you go about ensuring your password IS safe, what made you choose it.

I know this can be a very sensitive issue so I understand if people don't want to post. I'm just trying to get an idea because with all my passwords and all the various websites, forums and e-mail accounts, I have diffuclities keeping track of which password I use for each.

So imagine this, for some odd reason, some unexplained reason you could do one great thing and their was no possible chance of failure, what would you do?

I want to know what you want to do in as much detail and why. I want to know what is stopping you from doing exactly that right now. I want to know the current closest and realistic thing you could do. I don't care how ridiculous this sounds or how far out your proposal is whether it be consume the moon, play badmington with a shark or become a super hero.

I also want to hear about realistic life ambitions or dreams that are sensible thoughts and what you plan to do about it, if anything and if the answer is no, then why.

For me, it would have to be the super-powers. Something like superman or possibly batman. What is standing in my way is the fact that I was born on the wrong planet so have no super powers. The closest thing would be some spandex wearing vigilante running around trying to fight crime with my trusty sidekick.

As for realistic, i've always wanted to be a pilot. I suppose it's nothing too out of reach I just don't have the availiable knowledge on how I would approach a career like this, and the longer I leave it the less chance I have of doing anything about it.

Has anyone got any pointers how I can hide the GUI and make it appear when a key is pressed. The only thing that comes to mind is if any key is pressed, that key is stored into a variable, the GUI turns on and then that variable is placed in the textbox. This would work, but how would I have an "if any key A-Z is pressed"?

Well tomorrow is the 1st of September and I know many people are anxious to get hold of them. I myself am not, but do appreciate the technology. I'm just about to get ready to head down for the midnight launch at my shop for all the die hard fans who can't let me sleep and must have it now. So I must put on my smiley face and sell to the few who need to get it now.

Just posting to really see if anyone is waiting to get one, I know our store alone took about 180 deposits for day one alone.

Also any Japanese or American AGSers, what do you think of the machines?

And if you read this post tomorrow after buying one yourself, what do you European's think of them. Anyway, must go make some coffee. Will post back tomorrow about 7pm after I finish working.

Cheerio.

Critics' Lounge / Help My Super Hero

Hey all, I'm just concepting ideas for the most cliche of all super hero characters but make him look pathetic and comical at the same time. I used IGN's super hero maker to concoct this:

Also if anyone can help be transforming him into a character suitable for 640 x 400 I would appreciate it.

EDIT - UGO sorry, check it out - http://www.ugo.com/channels/comics/heroMachine2/heromachine2.asp

In the current issue of "Computer Active" I noticed a small clipping about a piece of software called "Paint.net 2" and was developed by Microsft in partnership with Washington State University.

Not sure if anyone knows about this, I checked it out when they had an original beta release but this verison seems to be stable and decent enough to fully replace microsft Paint.

Anywho, here are some details for you all:

Paint.net is intended to be a replacement for the free MS Paint software provided with all Windows operating systems.

It offers many of the powerful features found in commercial editors, including the ability to work on multiple layers, full transparent PNG support, unlimited history, and a plethora of visual effects.

An interesting feature is the way each tool window becomes transparent when covering the image. This enables better implementation of effects and is something the big image editors are currently lacking.

Adding and editing text is somewhat limited, but will hopefully be improved in later versions. You can't seem to move text around the canvas or highlight it to change individual character sizes, and it doesn't automatically assign text to a new layer.

Check this link out to download it:

http://www.computeractive.co.uk/vnunet/downloads/2129101/paint-net

You will need to install .NET Framework 1.1 in order to run this software (23.1MB) - Link available through site given above.

Hope this is useful to the people still restricted to using MS Paint, or who have difficulties using some of the advanced software such as Photoshop.

M

EDIT - Fuzzbingles, just saw the freeware apps thread, and to boot it contains a paint.net link.... raspberries. I'll leave it here for now to aleert people to such a great alt. to Paint.

Advanced Technical Forum / Object Specific GUI
Fri 10/06/2005 16:45:30
I'm thinking about creating a GUI that would be similar to a VerbCoin, but rather than being restricted to just pictures of a mouth for talking, a hand for interacting and an eye for looking, I wish to add things like push, pull, open, close and some more specific ones related to puzzles or something... e.g destroy, jump, eat, punch, climb etc...

Each of these actions would be related directly to the object, hotspot or character. Should it be a character the options for talking and looking at would be available, and in the occasion fight.

With other things like a hotspot of a wall, the options look may be the only ones available, then you may go off speak to a character and he tells you theres a pot of gold at the top if you climb up, you go back and the new option of "climb" appears.

it's kind of a graphical text parser if you understand, where there are no limits to the actions that can be performed within the game only limited to the object itself.

has anyone got any help planning this out, coding it, theory and practicality issues?

I want to do this but I need your help please.
